SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,636, dated, January 20, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. DAVIS, of Highland Park, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in SchooLSlates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ofa face of my school-slate, and Figs. 2 and 3 sectional detail views of the same.
My invention relates to a slate for school and other purposes; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to protect all surfaces that can. with ordinary handling,
come in contact With the desk, table, 850., with felt, toavoid noise resulting from concussion.
I am aware that slate-frames have been covered with cloth for a similar purpose, and that rubber has been used; but in such constructions they are liable to get out of order.
I am also aware that noiseless material has been cemented or glued to the frame, the edges of the material entering grooves in the frame,
as shown in Patent No. 213,028, of March 11, 1879, and neither of these constructions are herein claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ an ordinary frame of longitudinal sections glued or jointed together. The sections are diamond- 3 5 shaped or polygonal in cross-section, and each edge is provided with a longitudinal slot, one to receive the edge of the slate proper and the others adapted to receive felt, which is forced into the slots, and held therein by'glu'e, 40
a portion of such felt projecting, as shown.
As an ornamentation, different colors may be used in the felt, as desired. Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame; a, the longitudinal slotwhich receives the slate-edge, anda the slots into which the felt B is forced, the same being held therein by glue, as shown.
I claim- In a school-slate, the frame composed of the sections A, diamondshapcd in cross-section, the edges of which are provided with slots 0r grooves a a, the grooves a being provided to receive theedges of the slate and the grooves a to receive strips of felt B, which are glued therein and project therefrom, as and for the purposes set forth.
