SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent No. 223,577, datea January 13, Isso.

Application filed November 7, 1879.

I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALLACE BROWER, of the city, coun y, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stirrups, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyiu g drawings, in Which- Figure 1 shows a stirrup, partly in section, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same.

My invent-ion relates to elastic foot-pads for stirrups, designed to provide a yielding and adhesivesurace to the foot of the rider.

`My invention consists in an improved article of manufacture composed of an india-rnbber stirrup-pad provided with flexible metallic strips arranged to clasp the pad tothe base or foot-rest ot' the stirrup, as will be fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, the letter' A designates a stirrup having combined therewith a foot-pad, B, made of indiarubber. The stirrup A is ot' ordinary form, and the pad B is applied to its cross-bar, the whole area of which i1, covers, so that the surface presented to the foot of the rider is one of india-rubber throughout, and,

owing to the natural elasticity and adhesiveness of this material, the pad is a check to the slipping of the foot in the Vstirrup. In order to increase the effect of the pad B, I roughen the top or bearing surface thereof, as shown in Fig. 2.

The letter G designates flexible metallic straps,\vhereby the pad B is attached to the stirrup, these straps being secured to the pad by rivets d or lother suitable means, and being bent around the cross-bar of the stirrup, as shown.

At the end of the pad B are notches e, to receive the side bars of the stirrup, and thereby to assist in holding the pad in place.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, an indiarubber stirrup-pad provided with flexible metallic strips arranged substantially as described, and adapted to be used in securing the pad to the stirrup, as set forth.
