Description

March 18, 1941. A. QUINN 2,235,332
APRON Filed Aug. 4, 1939 Patentecl Mar. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT orFIcE APRON Ada Quinn, Ogden, Utah Application August 4, 1939, Serial No. 288,444
I 6 Claims. (01.2-48) I This invention relates to aprons for personal wear, and more particularly to womens aprons of the sleeveless type employing either shoulder straps or a yoke, a back section or panel, and tie members connected to the side edges of the apron for cooperation with the back section in securing the garment in proper position upon the body of the wearer.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an apron of this general character which is not only relatively inexpensive to manufacture and economical in the amount of material used, but is also easily donned and removed, neat and attractive in appearance, and capable of being worn by and properly fitted to persons of difierent heights and sizes.
Since the invention is particularly directed to the structure of the back of the apron, another object is to provide a new and improved back construction employing novel means for forming the openings through which the tie members may be passed so as to adjust and fit the apron to the body of the wearer. 7
Another object is to simiplify the back construction of an apron of this character without detracting from the ability of the construction to efiect proper adjustment and fitting of the apron.
These and other objects will appear more fully upon a consideration of the two forms of apron which have been described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although it is to be expressly understood that this drawing is for the purpose of illustration only and is not to be construed as defining the limits of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for this latter purpose.
In the drawing, wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a back view of one form of apron embodying the invention wherein the back section or panel is formed as the lower end of a substantially V-shaped member which is in turn made integrally with or suitably connected to the shoulder straps;
' Fig. 2 is a view of the back construction of Fig. l detached from the remainder of the apron and showing the panel in unfinished condition to better illustrate the way in which the tie member receiving openings are formed;
Fig. 3 is a back view similar to Fig. 1 showing another embodiment of the invention wherein the back section or panel depends from a neck yoke and the tie member receiving loops are formed in a different manner than in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the lower end of the back section of Fig. 3 illustrating in detail the way in which the tie member receiving loops are formed.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the apron shown therein consists essentially of a body portion I I, a pair of shoulder straps I2 each attached at one end to the upper edge of the body portion I I, a V-shaped back I3 either formed integrally with or suitably connected to the shoulder straps I2 at its upper extremities and of sufficiently wide material to form a shaped back section or panel I4 at its lower end adjacent the waistline, and a pair of tie membersli suitably secured to the side edges of the body portion II at about the waistline and adapted to be selectively passed through suitable openings or loops associated with the section I4 when adjusting.
and securing the apron in place on the body of the wearer.
In this first embodiment of the invention, the back section I4 has secured to its lower end a strap or tape I6 of fabric material, and is provided intermediate its upper and lower ends with a pair of strap or tape receiving openings I'I disposed in vertically spaced, closely adjacent relationship. The strap or tape I6 is adapted to be threaded upwardly through the two openings I1 and to then have its upper end suitably secured, as by stitching I6, to the upper edge of the section I4 which, in the embodiment illustrated, is the point of junction of the inner edges of the two sides of the V-shaped back I3. In this manner, there are formed a plurality of vertically spaced loops or openings arranged in a single line through which the tie members I5 may be selectively passed when adjusting and securing the apron in place upon the body of the wearer. That is, in fitting the apron to a person of any given size, the front or body portion II is first adjusted upwardly or downwardly by lowering or raising the back section I4 which lies substantially in the small of the back, after which i the back section or panel I9 is substantially rec-.
tangular in shape and is secured at its upper end to a split neck yoke 20, instead of to the shoulder straps l2. The loop forming strap or tape 2! of thi modification is approximately twice as long as that of Figs. 1 and 2, and the panel I9 is provided with a third opening 22, spaced Vertically above the pair of opening 23 corresponding to those indicated at H in Figs. 1 and 2 by a distance equal to the height of the tie member receiving loop or opening which it is desired to form, the free end of the strap 2!, after being threaded through openings 23, then passing through opening 22 and returning behind the back panel to the lower edge thereof where it is secured in any suitable manner, as by stitching.
There is thus provided by the present invention an apron of new and improved construction which is comparatively cheap to manufacture as to both material and labor costs, and which may be readily adjusted to persons of different sizes without detracting from its smooth-fitting qualities and attractiveness. Due to the novel construction and arrangement of the parts forming the apron back, a plurality of vertically disposed tie member receiving openings may be provided in a simple and expeditious manner so as to facilitat the proper adjustment and fitting of the apron to the body of the wearer. The constructions illustrated provide an extremely simple and effective way of forming tie member receiving loops or openings which will not pull out during use. The apron may also be conveniently washed and ironed fiat, thus facilitating folding and storage of the laundered garment. These and other features which will be apparent from the foregoing description render the garment of the present invention especially well adapted for use in factories, hospitals, hotels and other institutions where aprons are used in large quantitites by persons of various sizes, and where a neat and attractive appearance is required.
Although two deiferent forms of apron back construction have been described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that the invention is not limited to the exact structures shown but is capable of a variety of -mechanical embodiments. For example, the exact shape and size of the back section or panel and the manner of its attachment to the rest of the apron may be varied from those illustrated, and the number of tie member receiving loops or openings in the single vertical series provided may be increased beyond two, if so desired. ,It will also be recognized that the aprons may be made up in various shapes, colors and styles, from various materials and goods, and with or without ornamental features and finish which it is unnecessary to show in the drawing. Various other changes, which will now appear obvious to those skilled in the art, may be made in the form, details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. Reference is therefore to be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limits of the invention.
What is claimed is:
