STRIPPER PLATE FOR PU D Patented Mar. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
My invention relates to stripper plates for punch holders.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved extensible pin for supporting the stripper plate.
A further object is to provide an extension for stripper plate supporting pins which can be combined with the pins now being used.
A further object is to provide an improved construction which will enable the stripper plate to be drawn toward the punch holder to expose the shearing edge of the punch for sharpening or inspection.
A further object is to provide a construction which will enable the use of similar counterbores in the punch holder and stripper plate.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
In the drawing, in which two embodiments of my invention are shown- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a punch holder and stripper plate;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-4 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing another form of pin extension.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the construction shown comprises a punch holder l, a stripper plate 2, and means for mounting the stripper plate on the punch holder. The stripper plate 2 and punch holder I have aligned circular openings 3 and 4, respectively, therein, each openihg including a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder 5 and 6, respectively. The means for securing the stripper plate to the punch holder comprise a bolt 1 having a cylindrical head 8 slidable in the cylindrical recess in the punch holder and engageable with the shoulder 6, and a cylindrical nut 9 threaded on the end of the bolt and slidable in the cylindrical recess in the stripper plate and engageable with the shoulder 5. The nut 8 and head 8 are both retractible into and out of the recesses beyond the entrance openings to these recesses. Means are provided for locking the out 9 and bolt 1 against relative rotation comprising a screw ll, threaded in an axial opening in the nut 9 and engaging the end of the bolt 1.
Suitable coil compression springs II are provided to hold the stripper plate 2 away from the punch holder I to strip the work away from the punch l2. The head 8 of the stripper pin, the end 01' the cylindrical nut 9, and the end of the set screw III are each provided with a hexagonal expose the shearing edge l3 of wrench-engaging socket I! for engagement with a correspondingly-shaped wrench head.
The stripper pin I and nut 9 may be so designed that when the set screw i0 is loosened and unscrewed so that its end is flush with the bottom of the threaded recess in the nut, the nut 9 can then be tightened up so as to draw the stripper plate 2 toward the punch holder l sufilciently to the punch for sharpening or inspection. The extensible pin 10 may be lengthened or shortened by loosening the set screw III and applying suitable wrenches to the head 8 of the stripper pin and nut 9.
It will be noted in Fig. 1 that the cylindrical recesses 3 and I may beof the same diameter and the openings for the shank of the stripper pin or bolt 1 may be of the same diameter, thus enabling the same drills to operate on the stripper plate and the punch holder.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1 except that here the nut I 4 is provided with an outwardly-extending flange I 5 providing a shoulder for engagement with the shoulder 5 on the stripper plate 2. In both forms it will be seen that sliding movement may take place either between the head 8 of the bolt 1 and the recess inwhich it is seated or between the nut 9 and the recess in which it is seated. It will also be noted that the nut extensions 9 and I4 can be used in combination with stripper plate supporting pins now in use.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A punch holder, a stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch 4 holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each openme having a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder, and means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses. guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with one of said shoulders,
a. cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess, guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with the other shoulder, said nut and head both being retractible into a recess beyond the entrance opening to said recess.
2. A punch holder, a stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each opening having a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder, means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses, guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with one of said shoulders, a cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess, guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with the other shoulder, and means for locking said nut and bolt against relative rotation.
3. A punch holder, a stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each opening having a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder, means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses and engageable with one of said shoulders, and a cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess and engageable with the other shoulder, and means for locking said nut and bolt against relative rotation comprising a screw threaded in said nut and engaging said bolt.
4. A punch holder, a, stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each opening having a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder, means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses, guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with one of said shoulders, a cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess, guided by its cylindrical sides and engageable with the other shoulder, said nut and head both being retractible into a recess beyond the entrance opening to said recess, and means for locking said nut and bolt against relative rotation.
5. A punch holder, a stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each opening having a cylindrical recess providing an annular shoulder, means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses and engageable with one of said shoulders, and a cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess and engageable with the other shoulder, said nut and head both being retractible into a recess beyond the entrance opening to said recess, and means for locking said nut and bolt against relative rotation comprising a screw threaded in said nut and engaging said bolt.
6. A punch holder, a stripper plate, and means for mounting said stripper plate on said punch holder, said stripper plate and punch holder having aligned circular openings therein, each opening having a cylindrical recess providingan annular shoulder, and means for securing said stripper plate to said punch holder comprising a bolt having a cylindrical head slidable in one of said cylindrical recesses and engageable with one of said shoulders, and a cylindrical nut threaded on said bolt and slidable in the other cylindrical recess and engageable with the other shoulder, said nut and head both being retractible into a recess beyond the entrance opening to said recess and each having an axial wrench-engaging recess.
