The book bodies i are each provided on both sides with hinge strips which are shown herein as having narrow overlapping attached portions 2 and wide free portions 3. 50
The end sheets are shown in one embodiment as folded in the middle to form equal width leaves 4 and 5 and in the other embodiment as folded off the middle to form wide and narrow leaves 6 and 1 respectively. It is understood that the leaves 4 and 5 of the middle folded end sheets are intended to be adhered along their outer faces on opposite sides of the fold to the hinge strips and thereby conceal the hinge strips to form so-called closed joints; while the leaves 6 and 1 of the off-middle folded end sheets are intended to be adhered respectively along their outer faces at their free edges to the overlapping and free portions of the hinge strips and thereby expose portion of the hinge strips and form socalled open joints.
The outer faces of the leaves 4 and 5 of the middle folded end sheets may be provided with narrow and wide bands 8 and 9 respectively of gum upon opposite sides of the fold, and the outer faces of the leaves 6 and I of the off-middle folded end sheets may be provided with narrow bands I and II respectively of gum along their free edge portions; it being understood that in this latter instance the folded edge of the end sheet may be subsequently trimmed with the edges of the book body, to form two separated leaves.
The machine comprises, generally, a supporting table; means for supplying successive book bodies provided with hinge strips; means for intermittentl advancing the book bodies successively from their magazine; means for supplying folded end sheets for attachment to the hinge strips on one side of the book bodies; means for applying gum, preferably, simultaneously, to the outer faces of the leaves of the folded end sheets along the desired portions thereof; means for folding the free edges of the hinge strips over onto the gummed portions of the upper leaves of the folded end sheets after the gummed portions of the lower leaves have been applied to the overlapping attached portions of the hinge strips; and means for applying sealing pressure to ensure a complete attachment of the end sheets to the hinge strips.
,Where it is desired to attach the folded end sheets to the other side of the book bodies by other apparatus in the same machine, the machine will include beside the means already set forth: means for reversing the book bodies and means for conveying the reversed book bodies into position to have the folded end sheets attached to their other side; it being understood that in this instance there are provided: a second means for advancing the book bodies; a second means for supplying folded end sheets; a second means for applying gum, preferably, simultaneously, to the outer faces of the leaves of the folded end sheets; a second means for folding the free edges of the hinge strips over onto the exposed gummed portions of the upper leaves of the folded end sheets after the gummed portions of the lower leaves have been applied to the overlapping attached portions of the hinge strips; and a second means for applying sealing pressure to ensure the even attachment of the end leaves to the hinge strips.
The table for supporting the several elements is denoted by l2. The magazine l3 serves as a means for supplying successive book bodies. The longitudinall disposed endless carrier [4 is arranged to receive successive book bodies from the magazine I 3 ,and intermittently advance the book bodies along the table l2. A magazine I5 serves as a source of supply for the folded end sheets.
The means for simultaneously applying gum I to the outer faces of the leaves of the folded end sheets along the desired portions thereof is herein shown as a gummer l6 comprising upper and lower gumming rollers [-1 and I8 .and their gum supply fountains I9 and 20. The narrow upper roller I1 is shown as adapted to gum a narrow band on the outer face of one leaf of a folded end sheet and. the wide lower roller I8 is shown Wide enough to gum a wide band on the outer face of the other leaf. A scraper 2| may be used in connection with the wide roller [8 to control the width of the band of gum applied thereby. For instance, the two gumming rollers when used without the scraper are arranged to gum the outer faces with narrow and wide bands upon opposite sides of the folded edge of a middle folded end sheet. Where the scraper 2| is used in connection with the wide lower gummin'g roller I8, narrow bands may be gummed on the outer faces of the two leaves of an off-middle folded end sheet at their free edges.
The means for folding the free edges of the hinge strips over onto the exposed gummed portion of the upper leaf of the folded end sheet after the gummed portion of the lower leaf has been adhered to the overlapping portion of the hinge strips by the operator, is shown as comprising a folder bar 22 manually operated from a foot lever 23 suitably placed for the convenience of the operator.
The means for applying sealing pressure to the attached portions of the end sheets and hinge strips may comprise a series of pairs of pressure rollers 24, 24 between which the book bodies with their attached end leaves are passed, to ensure an even sealin of the end leaves to the hinge strips. Where the end sheet applying operations are to be repeated by duplicate apparatus in the same machine we preferably provide a hinged plate 25 onto which the book bodies are successively pushed by their preceding book bodies. The hinged plate 25 may be swung to reverse the books as follows: a spring pressed tripping finger 26 projects in position to be operated by the leading book body as it arrives on the reversing plate 25, thus forcing the finger away from its normal position and thereby bringing its rotating clutch member 21 into engagement with the normally idle clutch member 28 which may be provided with a rotary segment 29 adapted in its rotary movement to mesh with a segment 30 on the hinge of the reversing plate 25 and thus swing the plate upwardly and over a sufficient distance to reverse the book body and deposit it on a laterally disposed endless carrier. The plate may be returned to its normal horizontal position by the weight 3| and its connection 32 as soon as the segment 29 leaves the segment 30. As soon as pressure is released from the tripping finger 26 the finger will return to its normal position and its rotating clutch member 21 separated from the clutch member 28.
A laterally disposed endless carrier is denoted by 33 and it is arranged to convey the reversed book bodies laterally into position to be engaged and advanced by a second longitudinally disposed endless carrier 34. The reversed book body may then be subjected to the end sheet applying operations by the use of the second folded end sheet supply magazine 35, the second gummer 36, the second folder 3'! and the second sealing pressure means 38.
A common drive, such as a motor 39, may be provided for operating the first and second longitudinally disposed endless carriers, the laterally disposed endless carrier, the first and second gummers, the first and second pressure applying means and the book body reversing means.
In the present instance the motor 39 is shown as operatively connected to the first longitudinally disposed endless carrier Hi by the double pulley .40, belt 12!, pulley 42, crossshaft .43, bevel gears 44, 45, shaft d6, bevel gears 41, 48 and shaft 49. This motor 39 is shown as operatively connected to the second longitudinally disposed endless carrier 34 by the double pulley 40, belt 50, pulley 5|, cross shaft 52, bevel gears 53, 54, shaft 55, bevel gears 56, 51 and shaft 5.8.
The motor 39 is shown as operatively connected to the first gummer IS through the pulley 59, cross belt 69 and pulley 6| on the cross shaft 62 of the lower wide faced gumming roller 18 which may drive the upper narrow gumming roller [1 through the gears 63, 64.
The second gummer .36 may be driven from the cross shaft 52 through the pulley 65, belt 66 and pulley 61 on the shaft of the lower wide faced gumming roller l8.
The lower rollers 24 of the first sealing pressure means may be driven from the cross shaft 52 through the train of gears 58. Similarly, the lower rollers of the second sealing pressure means 38 may be driven from the cross shaft 43 through the train of gears 65. The laterally disposed endless carrier 33 may be driven from the cross shaft 52 through the bevel gears Ill, ll, shaft 72, spur gears 13 and shaft 14.
The clutch member 21 of the book body reversing means may be driven from the shaft 14 through the train of gears 15.
A floor guide 16 may be provided for turning the free portion 3 of the upper hinge strip upwardly into position to be engaged and turned over by the manually operated folder bar 22.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
