4 Claims.
The present invention relates to toy devices, and has special reference to such devices which may be used in toy circuses and the like for advertising purposes.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which in operation closely simulates a bear or other animated figure balancing itself on a barrel or other round or cylindrical article, and rolling the article.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of the character indicated.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of the device;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation and partly broken away, of the device;
Fig. 3 is a sectional bottom plan view, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The device as illustrated in the drawings cornprises a round or cylindrical object 2 in representation of a barrel which is mounted to roll on a table top or platform 4. Over the barrel is a figure 6 in representation of a bear or other animated object, attempting to balance itself upon the barrel and to roll the barrel.
The barrel 2 is made in two sections which are spaced apart to provide a peripheral slot 8. The two sections are held together by means of a pin I having its ends secured in the outer end walls of said sections.
Upon the pin I0 there is pivoted a rod I2, the upperportion of which extends through the slot 8 and is secured to the figure 6 so as to hold the gure in position with relation to the peripheral surface of the barrel 2. The rod below the pivot I0 extends downwardly through the slot 8 and an elongated slot I4 in the table and its lower end has a weight I6 secured thereon. The rod I2 is provided with an elongated slot I8 through which a stud or pin 20 extends that is carried by a sprocket chain 22 which passes over sprocket wheels 24 secured on shafts 25 that are journaled in bearings in brackets 26 depending from the underside of the table. The stretches of the chain between the sprocket wheels are arranged in the same vertical plane and parallel with the slot I4.
The chain 22 is adapted to be driven from an electric motor 28 through a chain 30 which passes over a sprocket wheel 32 driven by the motor (Cl. Lifi-100) shaft and a sprocket wheel on one of the sprocket wheel shafts 25.
With this construction, upon driving the sprocket chain 22, the stud or pin 20 tends to carry the depending weighted rod I2 therewith and thus tends to roll the barrel 2 on the table. As the pin 20 is carried by the lower stretch of the sprocket chain 22, the barrel tends to be roll-ed in one direction and as the pin 20 travels over the lefthand sprocket wheel and in the direction of the upper stretch of the chain the barrel tends to be rolled in the opposite direction.
Owing to variation in the friction between the barrel and the table, however, and the action of the counterbalancing weight I6 a hesitating nonuniform back and forth rolling movement is imparted to the barrel. At the same time the swinging of the pendulum-like rod I2 about the moving stud 20, imparts to the bear a non-uniform vibratory motion over the upper portion of the barrel. Such operation of the device closely simulates a bear or other animal balancing itself on a barrel and cautiously rolling the barrel back and forth.
The platform 4 might be a ring of a toy circus, and the device may through electrical connections with the motor 28 be thrown into and out of operation in timed relation with other devices of the circus.
As will be evident to those skilled in ythe art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a platform having an elongated slot therein, an object in representation of a barrel or other article adapted to roll on the platform, said object hav-A ing a peripheral slot therein, a gure in representation of a bear or other animated body arranged over said object and having the appearance of balancing itself thereon in position to roll the object on the platform, a rod extending through the peripheral slot in said object and through said slot in the platform and pivotally mounted about the axis of the object, the upper end of said rod supporting the fleure in said position, a counter-balancing weight upon the lower end of the rod, an endless conveyor arranged below the platform, a pin and slot connection between said rod and said conveyor, and means for driving .the conveyor to cause the rod to impart a non-uniform back and forth rolling motion to the object and to vibrate the figure over the object to give the appearance of the ligure rolling the object on the platform.
2. In a device of the class described, a platform, an object in representation of a barrel or other article adapted to roll on the platform, a gure in representation of a bear or other animated body arranged over the object, and means the axis thereof, a figure in representation of a bear or other animated body mounted on one end of said rod in proximity to the peripheral surface of the object, and means located beneath the platform tending to maintain the rod in vertical position to maintain the iigure in balancedlike position over the object.
4. A lstructure according to claim 3 in which means is. provided for rolling the object back and forth on the platform and for vibrating the :figure over the object, comprising an endless conveyor, means for driving the conveyor, said rod having an elongated slot, and a pin carried by the conveyor and working in the slot during the movement of the conveyor.
