IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,719, dated December 16, 1879 application filed September 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Moon, of Pleasant Grove, in the county of Forsyth, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cultivator as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of my cultivator. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detailed views of parts thereof.
Arepresents the arched axle, provided with the wheels B B. G is the tongue, fastened by a clip to the axle. The frame is formed of two bent bars, DD, one of which is fastened by a clip to the end of the axle, just inside of the wheel, and the two ends extended upward, one forward and the other rearward, and secured to the tongue 0.
At the rear end of the tongue is a double cross-brace, D, and at the front is a single cross-brace, D
E is the drivers seat, supported on the tongue.
To each end of the axle, and depending from it, is secured an L-shaped arm, F, which is held in place by two inclined braces, F F, connecting the same with the front crossbrace, D as shown. On each end of the axle is also secured a clip, a, and in this clip and in the end of the arm F is swiveled a vertical slotted coupling, 1), in which the cultivatorbeam is to be pivoted. When only two plows are used, with handles, for a walking-cultivator, the swiveled couplings I) admit of the plows being turned from side to side, as required.
G represents the main cultivator beam, on each side pivoted in the coupling 1). The forward portion of this beam runs straight, and is then curved downward and rearward, and the extreme rear end runs also straight and parallel with the forward portion. To this beam is attached a shorter beam, G, which is further, by a brace, G connected to the arm F, the brace being pivoted to said arm.
Each beam is provided with a plow-foot, H, having a plow, I, secured to it. The plowfoot is made of a single piece, bent near the center somewhat in V form, the front arm, however, being curved forward. One arm of the plow-foot is pivoted to the beam, while rear notches, as, being for holding the plows down into the ground, and the forward notches, w, for holding them elevated.
When handles are used, as previously stated, the beams G are dispensed with, and to the beam G, on one side, is attached astirrup or frame, L, to which a plow foot and plow are attached, as shownin Fig. 4.
When a single plow is to be used in the center the plow-beam G is made shorter, as shown in Fig. 2, and to its forward end are attached two divergin g arms, G G, the front ends of which are pivoted in the couplings b b. An angular link, d, is attached to the beam to form connection with one of the levers J, as above described.
When a single plow is to be used on one side, an arm, G is attached to the beam, as
shown in Fig. 3, for forming connection with the other couplin".
The plow-beams are all made reversible, so that either end may be the front to be fastened in the coupling. This is of great importance in difierent kinds of work.
It will be noticed that the different attachmen ts to the plow-beams are easily removable,
and can be reversed, when the beam is re versed, end for end, and thus the plows may be brought closer to or farther from the axle, as may be required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cultivator, the snlky composed of the arched axle A, wheels B B, tongue 0, bent bars D, L-shaped arms F, and braces D, D and F, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. a
2. In a cultivator, a plow-beam constructed substantially as described, and reversible, end for end, connected to the sulky and operated by means of a lever, and held rigidly in place by a pawl, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the reversible plowbearn G, with V-sha-ped foot Hand plow I I connected thereto, the links d, lever J, with gravitating dog h, and the rack K, with two sets of notches, 00 :12, at varying angles, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
