This invention relates to combined shipping anddisplay packages and to the containers or supports used in such packages, and particularly to packages for that type of stick confection or candy known as lollypops.

In any case, prior to the assemblyfofl the'lolly pops in. their display positionsfin. thei boxes I0 andj-l I, the'holes 21 though circumferentially out} are incompletely formed, being substantially filled by the material 29, which itLis.intended toremove from the top-l4- to form the-hole. .In' other-words, the punchings 2 fllprefera'blyare: not stripped from theztopbutf are'spermitted to remain in the holes 21- until they are driven therefrom during-the operation of forcing the lollypop sticks 30 therethrough, or by a separate operation, if desired.
As has been indicated, a bracing sheet I3 is arranged in the interior of each of the boxes I and II. Said sheet is provided with a series of suitably spaced parallel score lines 3|, 32 and 33 extending completely across or transversely of the sheet and permitting the sheet to be folded into the generally M-shaped form shown in Fig. 3. The sheet may be of somewhat heavier cardboard than that from which the boxes I0 and II are made, and when flat and unbent, is of substantially greater length than the distance between the sides It and I! of the inner box. When bent into its operative form, the horizontal or plan view projection of the sheet is the same in area and shape as that of the top [4 and bottom I5.
A series of unstripped punchings intended to result in holes 34 are arranged in rows in the sheet I3, similar to the rows 23, 24, 25 and 26 of the inner box, said holes 34 being preferably of about twice the diameter of the holes 21. The punchings 35 are permitted to remain in the holes 34, if desired, in the same manner as the punchings 29 are retained in the holes 21, until the lollypop sticks are each passed through a pair of corresponding and vertically aligned holes 2'! and 34. To insert the sheet I3 into the inner box, the rectangular sectionsbetween the score lines are bent to the proper inclination to the vertical, namely, at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees more or less and to make the distance between the end edges 36 and 3! of the sheet about the same as the distance between the ends I and I! of the inner box. The side flap as 20 or '22 of the inner box having been opened, the sheet I3 in its M-shaped form is inserted into the box with its side edge 33 resting against one of the side flaps as 20 and its end edges 3B, 3'! in sprung or 0' pressed contact with the ends I! and I6, respectively.
It will be understood that when the sheet I3 is folded, bent or corrugated, it tends to flatten out or expand back to its original flat shape and length and this-tendency to flatten urges'the end edges 36 and 31 to move outwardly, resulting in the pressed contact with the box sides just described. The length of the sheet is such that when the sheet is inserted into the box, the bends or folds at the score lines 3| and 33 are preferably in pressed contact with the box top I4, and the fold at the score line 32 is in similar pressed contact with the box bottom I5. The sheet I3 thereby forms an adequate bracing means for the box top and bottom, preventing collapse or any material yielding thereof toward each other under the stresses of handling and shipment or under the pressure thereon caused by the insertion of the sticks 30 through the holes 21 and 34.
The top I4 is also maintained in a fiat state by the bracing sheet I3, thereby preserving the good appearance of the display package when used for display purposes. Nor do any of the inclined sections of the sheet yield to any material extent under the pressure of the sticks, since said sections are comparatively rigid and are braced between the box top and bottom. In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. '7 and 8, the bracing sheet does not directly engage the box top, but bracing the top through additional inserts later to be described.
Regardless of whether the punchings 29 and 35 are removed from the respective holes 21 and 34, the confections 28 may, nevertheless, be .quickly 75.'-and-easily arrangedin their-desired'positions by merely pressing the stick 30 thereof through said holes, the respective corresponding holes being automatically aligned when the sheet I3 is inserted into the inner box in the position described. If the punchings have not been removed, downward pressure of the stick merely displaces the punching from the hole and it drops down into the interior of the box from which it need not be removed. The hole 34 being larger than its corresponding hole 21, and the angle of ,the various folded sections of the sheet l3 being approximately forty-five degrees, it is an easy matter to drive the stick through the hole 34 by slight pressure, thereby removing the punching 35, if such punching is present in the hole 34, said punching dropping into the interior of the inner box without interfering with the proper appearance of the package and without the necessity for removal of the punchings. If desired, however, the punchings may first be stripped from the holes 21 and 34, making it somewhat easier to pass the stick 30 through the hole 34, since said hole is invisible in the interior of the box. The sheet sections being comparatively rigid, the sheet does not yield if the stick does not enter the holeor engage the punching. Consequently, it is comparatively easy to manipulate the stick till it does pass properly through the hole 34 or until itstrips the punching 35 which is removable on the application of slight pressure thereto.
The stick 30 contacts with the wall surrounding the hole 34 at two spaced points as 39 and 40, and cooperates with the wall surrounding the hole 21 to hold the stick in its proper vertical position without danger of its leaning backward, forward or sidewise, whereby the rows of confections in the box are maintained, until withdrawn from the box, in their proper positions to present a good appearance for display purposes.
The boxes I0 and II with the confections assembled therein, as above described, are used as.
shipping packages as well as for display packages so that the retailer need merely set the boxes on thecounter withoutthe necessity for manipulatingany of the'articles or for performing any folding, assembling or other operations. For shipping purposes, two boxes I0 and II with the confections preassembled therein in the manner hereinbefore described, are arranged with their side flaps in contact with each other, whereafter the outer cover box I2 is arranged thereover. Said box I2 is completely open at its bottom and is merely set over the confections to cover them and to also cover the exposed sides and ends of the boxes I0 and II. The box I2 may be tied to the boxes I0 and II by a string 4| or the like to form a shipping package, or it may be wrapped or otherwise secured thereto, if desired, it being understood that the completely assembled package, consisting of the boxes I0,- II and I2 and their contents are preferably tied together and set into larger cartons containing a plurality of such packages for purposes of shipment from place to place. The retailer receiving the package merely removes the outer box I2 whereupon the boxes Ill and II are exposed ready to be set on the counter for display.
Referring now to Fig. 7, I have there .shown a modified form of the invention particularly applicable'to comparatively'deep boxes and confections having long sticks as 44. The outer or cover box 45 is open at its bottom and covers the inner box 46, which is deeper but otherwise similar to the boxes Ill and II, and is similarly provided with'unstripped' punchings' or holes 41 in its'top 48. The bracing and supporting sheet 49 is similar to the bracing sheet l3, but does not directly engage the box ,top. It will be understood that to provide the required number of rows of holes 50 in the sheet 49, all at about the same distance above the bottom 5|, the sheet is bent about a number of parallel spaced score lines. If the sheet were high enough to engage the box top as well as the box bottom, the inclinations of the sections of said sheet would be too great, in this case, to permit easy passage of the sticks 44 through the holes .53, or saidholes would have to be made of too great a diameter.
To obviate these difiiculties, the angle of the sheet sections to the bottom is maintainedat about forty-five degrees more or less, but additional bracing inserts as 52 and 53 are arranged between the sheet 49 and the box top, so that any pressure on the top is transmitted to the sheet by the inserts and transmitted by the sheet to the box ends.
The insert 53 comprises a top 54, and a pair of sides 55, 56 depending from the top and having their lower edges 59, 60 arranged in the trough 51 of the middle depression in the sheet 49. Preferably, the insert 53 is used to brace the top 48 until all the sticks. .44 have been inserted through the corresponding vertically aligned holes in the top and the sheet, whereafter the inserts 52 are inserted into place. The top 58 of the insert 52 engages the under face of the box top while the lower edges 61, 62 of the respective depending sides rest on the upper surface of an inclined section of the sheet 49 and are braced against the adjacent sticks 44 against collapse. The box top is maintained substantially'rigid and against yielding or collapse by the inserts cooperating with the sheet 49 in an obvious manner when the sticks are in place.
If desired, the insert 53 may be used as a temporary bracing means, and later removed and replaced by the permanent inserts 52, or the insert 53'may be left in place as may be found convenient. In the latter case, as shown in Fig. 8, the bracing sheet may be made in one piece with the insert by the provision of additional score lines 63, E4, 65 and 66 and additionalmaterial between the score lines at the middle of the sheet to form the integral sides 61, 68 and the connecting top 69.
It will be seen that the invention provides a simple, economical and efficient combined display and shipping package well adapted to meet the severe requirements of practical use and designed to adequately support and display a large number of confections pleasingly and conveniently.
While I have shown and described certain specific embodiments of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, but intend to claim the invention as broadly as may be permitted by the state of the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a box having a top, bottom, ends and a movable side flap closure, the top having spaced apertures therein, of an interior bracing and article supporting sheet loosely inserted into the box through an open side thereof with the end edges of the sheet in engagement with the ends of the box, said sheet having parallel spaced transverse score lines therein and having a plurality of apertures between the score lines each of greater diameter than that of the apertures in the top, said sheet'being bent on said score lines into M-shaped form to provide flat and comparatively rigid inclined section-s between the'score. lines, each of said sections extending between and being in contact with the top and bottom ofthe box, corresponding apertures in the topand in said sheet being in vertical alignment to permitthe vertical passage of the stick of a stick confection therethrough with the end of the stickin'contact with the bottom.
2. In a combined display and shipping package for lollypops, a pair of similar boxes each having apertures in the top thereof, a bracing sheet within each box provided with apertures in vertical' alignmentwith, and of greater diameter than, the apertures in the top of the box, the bracing sheet being bent along spaced parallel score lines to providea multiplicity of angularly arranged sections thereon separated by folds and toimpart a flattening tendency thereto, the ends of said sheet contacting with the ends of the box and the alternate folds contacting with the top and bottom of the box respectively, said boxes being arranged in side to side contact, a plurality of lollypops each provided with a stick, the stick of each lollypop being passed through an aperture in the-top of a box and through a corresponding aligned aperture of the sheet, and an outer box open at its bottom and having a closed top resting on the lollypops.
3. A combined shipping and display package for confections each provided with a stick, comprising a pair of boxes arranged in side by side relation and each having an apertured top, an apertured bent bracing sheet within the box, the stick of each confection passing through an aperture of the top and a corresponding aperture of the sheet, an outer covering box open at its bottom and having a top resting on the confections, and means for detachably securing the boxes together whereby removal of the covering box exposes the first-mentioned pair of boxes for display. I
4. A combined shipping and display box for stick confections comprising a boxv having an apertured top, and a bracing sheet having spaced parallel score lines completely thereacross and having apertures therein of larger diameter than the apertures of said top, said sheet being loosely inserted into the box with the apertures thereof in vertical alignment with the corresponding apertures of the top and with the ends thereof braced against the ends of the box, said sheet being bent about said score lines in. position to arrange the material at alternate lines in pressed contact with the inner face of the top of the box and to arrange the material at the remaining score lines in contact with the bottom of the box, the sections of the sheet between the score lines being each arranged in an inclined position.
5. A combined shipping and display box comprising a box having a top, bottom, sidesv and ends, the top having a plurality of apertures of one size therein, and a combined bracing and supporting sheet loosely inserted within the box and coextensive therewith, said sheet having apertures of a larger size therein each vertically aligned with an aperture of the box top, said sheet being bent along parallel lines to provide angularly disposed sections on said sheet extending between and contacting with the top and bottom of the box, the end edges of said sheet being braced against the ends of the box, and at least one of the sides of the box being openable for the insertion therethrough and into the box of said sheet.
' 6. The combination with a box having an apertured top, of'a combined bracing and supporting sheet having an'area greater than that of said top, said shee't'having apertures therein corresponding to and aligned with but larger than the apertures of the top, said sheet being bent into angularly arranged sections along transverse parallel lines and being fitted slidably into the box with the end edges thereof braced against the ends of the box, said sections extending angularly and rigidly between and bracing the top and bottom of the box.
'7. The combination with a box having an apertured top, and having a bottom, sides and ends, of a bracing and supporting sheet loosely inserted into the box with the end edges thereof braced against the ends of the box, said sheet being apertured correspondingly to the apertured top, and said sheet being of generally M-shaped form to provide a series of fiat and comparatively rigid inclined transverse sections therein extending between'and bracing the box top and bottom and in contact therewith.
8. A box having a perforated top, and means for bracing the top and for also cooperating with the top to support stick confections including a perforated sheet arranged loosely in the interior of the box and extending between a pair of opposed faces thereof, said sheet being bent along the transverse parallel lines into a plurality of inclined perforated sections, the respective perforations of the sections which correspond to the perforations of the top being in substantial vertical alignment.
9. A box having a perforated top and means for bracing the top and for also cooperating with the top to support stick confections, said means including a sheet loosely arranged in the interior of the box and engaging the box at its end edges, said sheet having a plurality of sections therein each bent into a position inclined at an angle other than a right angle to the box top and each perforated correspondingly to the top with perforations of greater diameter than those of the top.
10. A box having a perforated top and means for bracing the top and for also cooperating with the top to support stick confections, said. means including a first sheet loosely arranged in the interior of the box and engaging the box at its end edges, said sheet having a plurality of sections therein each bent into a position inclined at an angle other than a right angle to the box top and each perforated correspondingly to the top, and an additional bracing sheet cooperating with the first sheet to brace the top, said additional sheet having a pair of sides joined by a top, the bottom edges of the sides engaging the first sheet and the top of the additional sheet engaging the box top.
11. A box having a top provided with apertures for the vertical passage therethrough of the sticks of stick confections, a bracing sheet in the box having sections inclined to the top and provided with apertures corresponding to those in the top for the passage therethrough of the lower parts of said sticks, and bracing inserts in the box each having a top and depending sides, the top engaging the box top and the sides being arranged in position to engage the sticks with the lowermost edges of said sides engaging the inclined sections of the bracing sheet.
12. A box having an aperturedtop, a bracing sheet having inclined apertured sections inclined to the top, said sheet being loosely inserted into thebox and held at its end edges by the box against distortion,said sections being of lesser height than that of the box, and bracing members interposed between and engaging the box top and the bracing sheet and transmitting stresses therethrough from the box top to the sheet and thereby bracing the top against yielding and collapse.
13. A box having an apertured top, a bracing sheet in the box having apertured sections inclined to the top, and bracing members in the box resting on the sheet and engaging the box top.
14. A box having a perforated top and having imperforate sides, ends and a bottom, and a sheet arranged in the interior of the box and bent along transverse parallel lines into inclined substantially rigid triangular sections extending between and bracing the box top and bottom and in contact therewith, said sheet being perforated correspondingly to the perforated top, and the end edges of the sheet being in pressed contact with the box ends.
15. A box provided with a top having unstripped punchings therein adapted to be stripped therefrom to form apertures in said top, and a sheet Within the box having corresponding unstripped punchings therein of larger diameter than those of the top, said sheet being bent into inclined substantially rigid triangular sections extending between and bracing the box top and bottom and in contact therewith, said punchings being strippable from the top and sheet by the pressure of the stick of a stick confection.
16. A box provided with a top having unstripped punchings therein adapted to be stripped therefrom to form apertures in said top, said box having imperforate sides, ends and a bottom, and a sheet within the box having corresponding unstripped punchings therein of larger diameter than those of the top, said sheet being bent along transverse lines into inclined substantially rigid triangular sections each extending between and contacting with the box top and bottom, the end edges of the sheet being in pressed contact with the box ends, said punchings being strippable from the top and they sheet by manual pressure applied thereto by the stick of a stick confection, said stick being supported in vertical position by the Walls of the apertures produced by the stripping of the punchings.
