IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVING-GEAR FOR TOGGLE-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,463, dated Dcec'mber 9, 1879 application filed November 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANCIS WILLIAM ORossLEY and WILLIAM JOHN (JRossLEY, both of Manchester, England, have invented new and useful Improvemen tsin Driving-Gear for Toggle-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
Our invent-ion relates to improvements in y driving-gear for that class of presses in which a series of toggles are employed, and in which the said toggles are actuated by means of screws; and our invention relates to improved means for driving the said screws of such toggle-presses in a more expeditions manner than has heretofore been practicable.
In presses of the class above mentioned, and
as heretofore constructed, the horizontal screw, while it is caused to revolve, has also to move vertically at half the speed of the follower, and in consequence of this change of position it is necessary, when the screw has to be driven from a prime movingrshaft, to provide gearing of such a description that the screw is folceives rotary motion by a strap or otherwise,
and on thisshaft we liir'awheel or pinion, which gears with an intermediate wheel that gears also with a pinion or wheel fixed on the press-screw. Theintermediate wheel revolves on an axis which forms the joint of two radius-arms, the one of which is pivoted on the main or driving shaft and the. other on the press-screw. As the screw ascends or descends these arms are moved partly round on their pivoted ends and on their common joint, while they always keep the intermediate wheel in gear with both the wheels or pinions.
According to another construction of our in- V vention we drive the screw from the prime shaft by means of bevel-gearing on a vertical shaft, which is mounted ona step bearing on the press-screw, and slides up and down with i it through the bevel wheel, by which it is driven, the said vertical shaft being fitted to this wheel by a feather and keyway, so that it can slide through the said wheel while it must always revolve with the latter.
In both constructions the proportions of the gearing may be varied, as desired, for different speeding, and the prime shaft may be provided with a clutch and reversing-gear of any known kind, so that the press-screw can be stopped or driven in either direction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents aside view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of a toggle-press constructed according to one part of our invention, and provided with our improved gearing for driving the screw of the toggles. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4. is an end view of another construction of our improved togglepress and gearing for driving the toggle-screw of the same, as hereinafter described.

A is the main driving-shaft, which is caused to revolve in stationary bearings A A on the head-framin g of the press, the said shaft being provided, by preference, with two pairs of fast and loose pulleys, B and O, for varying the speed and for reversing and stopping the said press. D is the screw, which works the togglesEin the usuaLway, and'is arranged to move upward and downward with the middle joints of the said toggles. F is acounter-shaft, supported in bearings formed by the eyes of radius-rods Gr jointed on the main or driving shaft A and by the eyes of the radius-rods H jointed on the toggle-screw D. On the shaft F is a toothed wheel, K, which gears with a pinion, L, on the driving-shaft A, and also with a wheel, M, on the screw-shaft D. The radius-rods G and H admit of the -up-anddown movement of the screw D and its wheel M, and at the same time they keep the intermediate wheel K always truly in gear with the driving-pinion L and wheel M, receiving motion from the latter.
In the modified construction of our int-en tion, illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the prime shaft A drives a bevel-whee], K, through the medium of the bevel-pinion L, the said bevel wheel K being provided with a feather, which enters a groove in a vertical shaft, F, so that this shaft can slide through the boss of the said wheel K, but must revolve with it. The shaft F drives the screw-shaft D by means of the bevel-gearing M M, and the said shaft F works the toggles E in the usual manner, and rises or falls with the same by reason of its connection with their middle joints, the gearing M M and shaft F also moving up or down with the said screw or screw-shaft.
What we claim is 1. The improved method of working the screw D of a toggle'press by an intermediate wheel, K, kept in gear with a wheel, M, on the screw-shaft, and with a pinion, L, on the main or driving shaft A by means of radiusrods G H, permitting the vertical movement of the screw while the main or driving shaft revolves in stationary bearin gs, substantially as herein described, with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
2. The combination of the two toggle-leversE E, and the horizontal rotatable screw D, connecting and actuating said toggle-levers, and provided with a bevel-gear wheel, M, with the vertical shaft F, having bevel-pinion M, the gear-wheel K, through which the said vertical shaft freely moves while revolving with the same, and the main driving-shaft A, havinga pinion, L, meshing with the gear-wheel K, all substantiallyas and for thepurpose described.
