Description
Oct. 15, 1940, c. v. sT. LOUIS LOOSE-LEAF BINDER Filed Aug. 55,1938
fizuzrwor w' OLcwlzs MSALOLLLS Patented Oct. 15, 1940 UNID Application August 3, 1938, Serial No. 222,775
3 Claims.
The invention relates to a loose-leaf binder and more particularly to means for holding a binder in display position with each cover adapted to expose a sheet.
It is an object of this invention to provide a loose-leaf binder with means for limiting the rotation of each cover on its hinge so that said covers may be retained in approximately the same plane when the binder is opened. It is a further object of this invention to provide an easel structure for holding the binder in display position. Other objects of the invention will become apparent upon reading the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binder in display position with portions broken away to show the easel structure; and
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the binder in 20 closed position.
In the drawing, a pair of cover members 2 and 3 are hinged to a conventional ring metal l by means of the hinges 5 and 6. The ring metal includes a back plate l to which a back section 8 is secured in any suitable manner. The back section 8 is wider than the back plate 1 and projects beyond the hinges 5 and 5. When either cover is turned on its hinge it will engage the edge of the back section 8 which acts as a stop to limit the turning movement of each cover to approximately ninety degrees. This structure is of particular advantage when the binder is held open for display purposes as it holds the covers in approximately the same plane.
The cover member 2 is provided with a plate member 9 secured thereto by means of a plurality of rivets iii. One edge of the plate member'9 is curled, as indicated at H, to form a hinge sleeve. A short arm I2 is hin ed to the plate member 9 by means of a hinge pintle l3 passing through the hinge sleeve H. Another arm M extending transversely of the cover member 2 is Welded or riveted to the short arm l2. One end [5 of the arm l-i projects beyond the hinge I3 and is curled slightly, as indicated in Figure 2. The cover 2 acts as a stop for the arm it and engages the end it to limit the movement of the arm It on the hinge IS. The distance the end l5 projects beyond the hinge i3 and the curvature of the end 15 is so designed as to enable the arm M to support the binder in display position with the cover member 3 in approximately the same plane as 55 cushioned, as indicated at I6 to prevent the end of the arm from scratching or marringthe surface of any desk or table upon which the binder may be stood. I prefer to provide the protection for the end iii of the arm It by covering it with binding material harmonizing with the binding of the covers and back section of the binder, but any suitable protective means may be used. The end it is provided with a socket ll adapted to engage a stud 83 secured to cover member 2 to retain the arm M in close contact with the cover member 2 when the binder is closed.
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention in detail it will be understood that the description thereof is intended to be illustrative, rather thanrestrictive, as many details may be modified or changed withoutdeparting from the spirit or scopeof my invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact structure described, except as limited by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a loose-leaf binder, sheet retaining mechanism, a pair of cover members hinged to said sheet retaining mechanism, an easel structure secured to one of said cover members, said easel structure being adapted to support said binder with the sheet retaining mechanism extending parallel to the surface upon which the binder is supported, and a back section secured to said.- sheet retainin mechanism, said back section be ing adapted to support said other cover member in approximately the same plane as said first mentioned cover member. I
2. In a loose-leaf binder, sheet retainingmechanism, a pair of cover members hinged to said sheet retaining mechanism, an easel extending transversely of one of said cover members and adapted to support said binder with said sheet retaining mechanism parallel to the surface upon which said binder is supported, and a back section secured to said sheet retaining mechanism, said back section engaging said other cover memher to retain it in display position above said sheet retaining mechanism.
3. In a loose-leaf binder, sheet retaining mechanism, a pair of cover members hinged to said sheet retaining mechanism, an easel structure secured to said loose-leaf binder for supporting said binder in display position, and a back section secured to said sheet retaining mechanism, said back section engaging both of said covers to hold them in approximately the same plane when said binder is supported in display position.
CHARLES v. ST. LOUIS.
