Description

H. A. HARVEY.. Screw-Nail.
No. 221,729. Patented Nov. 18, 1879.
F/g'so". 2.
III"III..
lIIIIIIIII IIIIII UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HAYWARD A. HARVEY, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-NAILS.
Specification forming part of' Letters Patent No. 221,729, dated November 18, 1879; application filed January 30, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, `IL/.UZWARD A. HARVEY, ot' the city ot' Orange, county of Essex, and State oi' New Jersey, have invented an Improved Screw-Nail; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is alongitudinal view of the screwnail. Fig. 2 is a view of the face of the head, showing the projections or nipples. thereon.
The object of my improvementis to produce an article adapted to the use ot' workers in wood, which may be employed both as a screw and as a nail, and which may be drivenin with a hammer or inserted with a screw-driver, in either case susceptible oferrtraction by a screwdriver.
In using my improved screw-nail, I prefer to start it with a hammer and work ithome with a screw-driver.
My improved screw nail is provided with projections or nipples a a on the tace of the head, which receive the blow of the hammer,
and which are so situated relatively as to permit the application of a screw-driver with greater facility than the ordinary nick. These nipples can be made cheaper than the nick, as the blow which, in the manufacture of the article, forms the head forms the nipples.
I provide my screw-nail with a cone point, l), to render its entrance easy and to center it. It has aratchet-thread, d, with the long angle or bevel toward the point, and can be driven with as little power as an ordinary smooth French nail, and does not tear the ber of the wood as does a V-thread.
I intend to make the thread and cone point both by rolling and cutting, principally by rolling.
What I claim as my invention is- A screw-nail having the projections or nipples a a upon the head, a cone point, b, and a ratchet-thread, d, substantially as described.
H. A. HARVEY.
