Description

Patented Aug. 6, 1940 man? AraN'r OFFICE PASTE CONTAINER carl R. Klok, Timer, Wis.v 'y
Application October y11, 1938,' Serial 9 claims. (c1. 2215-78) Thisinvention relates to containers for paste, such as tooth paste or shaving paste, or similar material or substancefand more particularly to those that comprise a container body of fixed 6 shape and size, and'a movable expeller for discharging the paste or similar material-from a spout or nozzle provided for that purpose.
In a general way, therefore, this invention is in the nature of animprovement on the construction shown and described and claimed broadly in prio-r application Serial No. 189,372, filed February 8, 1938.y
The object of the present invention and improvement is to provide a novel construction and arrangement whereby the expeller is movable transversely of the. axis of the body of the container, so that the discharger from the space between the inner end of the expeller and one wall of the container body is laterally of said space, instead of in the same direction as the movement of the expeller, whereby a comparatively flat or flattened form of container may be used for this purpose, with the expeller on one of the broad sides thereof, and with the spout or discharge nozzle located on the periphery or edge of the container body, instead of being axially aligned withthe expeller, thus providing an articlein simulation of a compact for cosmetics thatcan be conveniently carriedin a pocket orhand bag or that may be laid on a table.
It is also an object to provide vcertain details and features of construction tending to increase the-general eiiiciency and desirability of a paste container of thisfparticular character.
ATo the foregoing and other useful ends, the invention `consistsin matters hereinafter set forth and'claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing, in whichy Fig. 1 is a perspective of a container embodym ing the principles of the invention.
' Fig..2 is a perspective of a package of paste that maybe employed in filling the container.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line 3--3 in Fig. 1 of .the drawing.
Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3, showing a different forrnof the invention.
Fig. 5 isa view similar to Fig. 1, showing a different formof the invention.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on line 6 6 in Fig, 5 of the drawing.
17 is 'a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a different form of the invention. Fig. 8 is an enlarged section on line 8 8 in Fig. 7 of the drawing. .f
As thus illustrated, referring to Figs. 1, 2, and
No. l234,437
3 of the drawing, the invention comprises a sheet metal container bodyl of fixed size and form, of substantially at or attened contour, with a dis-y charge spout or nozzle 2 in the periphery or edge thereof, this nozzle having a removable cap 3, for keepingthe container sealed. A vsheet metal eX- peller 4 extends through one of the relatively broad sides', ofthe container body, being formed to prevent disconnection of the exp'eller from the body, and toexpel the paste in the container when pushed downwardly. To prevent leakage through or around 'the joint between the eXpeller and the container body, a sackor lining 5 of any suitable material, such as Cellophane, can be employed to hold the paste. The saidfsack or lining can be perforated by any sharp instrument. .in serted through the spout or'no-zzle, and when the y expeller 4 is moved downwardly, the paste will be expelled or discharged.
As shown in Fig.A 4,' the construction is similar to thatA shown in Fig. 3but in Fig. 4 the flexible liningof Cellophane or other material is omitted, and in this `case a tight and accurate fit between the expeller and the containerbody will be necessary, in order to prevent leakage.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the construction is similar'to that shown in Fig. Softhe drawing, but in this case a Vremovable screw threaded side wall 6 is provided for reloadingthe; container, so that the latter can be usedY for some time byv reloading1 it from time totime with a new package of paste.
In Figs. 7 and 8 ythev construction is similar to that shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, but in this case the expeller 'l is rotary, instead of movable `bodily,va,r1d is provided with screw threads 8 for engaging the screw threads `9 on the interior cylindrical wall ofthe container body. When the expeller l is rotated, the paste in the container will be discharged or expelled from the nozzle, until the container is empty. Obviously, the lining or sack of Cellophane or other iiexible material previously mentioned can be usedinthe construction shown in Figs.v 7 and 8, if such is necessary or desirable. .'Butit can be omitted if the metal-parts are cast and the screw threads are accurately cut to provide `a tight joint be-V tween them. Obviously, therefore, in each form of the invention, the expeller is on the broad side of the container, instead of being on the sidev of minimum. dimension, andthus the entire device, on a scalesuitable for some things, lcan be held between the 'thumb and finger of the same hand while the pastels being expelled' therefrom.
" "Ihus,` inr each form of the invention, the movable expeller has'movementy into the container lll body, or within the latter, in a direction at right angles to the axis of the container body, which axis extends through the spout or nozzle. Hence, in each form of the invention, the discharge is laterally from the space between the inner side of the expeller and the opposing wall of the container body, instead of being in the same direction as the downward or` inward movement of the expeller. In each form of the invention the construction is such that a substantially flat or flattened container is provided, which can be readily carried in a handbag, or conveniently stored in a cabinet. But while paste or similar material is discharged from the container, the latter remains rigid and fixed in shape and size.
In each form of the invention, it is obvious that the outer wall of the expeller can be provided with an opening having a closure of any suitable or desired character, (see Figs. 1 and 2) so that the space inside the expeller can be utilized for any desired purpose, as for holding face powder or cosmetics of one kind or` another', or any small articles that the user might wish to enclose therein'.
It will be seen that the shape and form of the device constituting the article of manufacture is such that it is stable when in repose with said expeller upward on a shelf or other flat support. Again, in each form of the invention, it is also true that the device has a shape and form whereby it is equally stable when in repose withsaid expeller downward on the shelf or other flat support. In addition, in each form of the invention, the expeller projects a distance, practically its entire depth, from the container when the latter is full, thereby to practically utilize the entire ca pacity of the container, so that the latter can in eifect be filled to capacity when sold.
Also, in each form of the invention, the depth of the expeller is preferably substantially the same as the depth of the container, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. 'Ihus the outer end or side of the expeller never moves below the open upper side of the container', looking at the device in the position in which it is indicated in the drawing.
Again, in each form of the invention, means are provided at the open side of the container to prevent the expeller from coming out accidentally when in use. In Figs. 3, 4, and 6, said means consist of the formationv shown at l0, while in Fig. 8 said means are the screw threads shown and described.
It will be understood, of course, that the invention is not limited to the use of any particu-r lar materials, for the body of the container, inasmuch as there are obviously many materials other than metal which can be used for this-purpose, in order to insure enough stiffness or rigidity to maintain the desired fixed form and shape of the container.
Thus by the invention an article is provided of a flat or flattened character in simulation of a compact for cosmetics that can be carried in a pocket or in a hand bag or that may r'espose lengthwise on either side on a table, substantially like an ordinary compact. In this way, the invention not only provides ra convenient receptacle for tooth paste, or other kinds of paste, but also provides an article that can be used as a compact for cosmetics or' the like, or in which to carry things in addition to the paste. While the article shown and described is perfectly flat on its oppo-l site sides, it is obvious that the requirements of the invention will `be satised by a formation that is more or less at on each side so that it may be carried and handled in the manner of a cosmetics compact. l
Furthermore, it will be seen that the discharge spout or nozzle 2 has its passage or outlet so formed that the paste is not only forced out laterally from the side of the container, but upwardly as well, whereby the outer end of the said spout or nozzle is subtsantially midway between the top and bottom of the substantially nat container, thus contributing materially to the said at or substantially flat design the purpose of which is to simulate, as explained, a compact for cosmetics or other things. In this way, the article constituting the invention can be placed on a table, on either of its two at sides, as the said location of the spout or nozzle will not interfere therewith.
It will be observed that when the sack or bag 5 is used, it serves to both insert and contain the paste in the container, and to prevent leakage, thus preventing any smearing of the fingers. Thus, practically the entire capacity of the container is utilized when filled, as the said sack or bag fits or conforms to all interior wall surfaces of the container.
Thus the expeller is movable but leakless, as provisions are made to prevent leakage of the paste between its sides and the sides of the container when the wide open side of the container is down or on the under side of the article.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a container body of xed shape and size, with one side thereof open, having a discharge spout or nozzle, for discharging paste from the container, and a movable but leakless expeller in said open side, preventing leakage when the open side is down, having unyielding engagement with said container and operating laterally or transversely of the axis of the base of said nozzle, to expel the paste, the body of paste practically fitting or conforming to the interior of the container, so that practically the entire capacity of the container is utilized when lled, all forming a substantially flat or flattened article with two opposite sides, both when full and when empty of paste, in simulation of a compact for cosmetics that can safely be carried practically flatwise in a pocket or hand bag or that may repose lengthwise on either side on a table, said expeller projecting from the container' a distance when the latter is full, to practically utilize the .full capacity of the container, with said device shaped and formed whereby it isstable when in repose oneither side and means on :the inside of said body at said open side to prevent the expeller from coming out accidentally when in use.
