1 Claim.
This invention relates to a detachable handle and has relation more pa of this kind for use in connection with a broom or kindred article.
rticularly to a handle It is a particular object of the invention to provide a handle which can tively applied to a broom head or the like whereby be quickly and effecsuch broom head or the like when worn out can be readily replaced.
venient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a broom structure embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View in elevation of the dowel herein comprised;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially the like.
The dowel l is provided along the major portion thereof with a groove 3 open at the outer end of the dowel l and with the inner end portion of the groove 3 having its base wall a disposed upwardly or outwardly on a predetermined curvature. that the groove 3 with the thereof can be readily produced by a circular saw The dowel I is preferably of wood so curved base portion a although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular material or method of manufacture.
The handle member H is preferably formed of sheet steel and the sheet is rolled upon itself to provide a substantially tubular member with the rib or bead extending ember and lengthwise The outer end of the handle member H is' closed, as at 5, in any desired manner and said closed end portion is provided therethrough with an opening 6 to provide means for suspending the handle and its associated head when not in use.
The opposite end portion of the handle member II is open whereby is provided a socket to snuglyreceive the outer portion of the dowel l with the seams engaging within the groove 3. The seam t, or more particularly the end portion thereof, contacts With'the base portion a of the groove 3 and rides up thereon. This connection between the handle member H andthe dowel i assures a tight and firm connection which will last during'the life of the head 2. This connection or joinder,-however, may be separated by proper pull upon either the dowel l or the handle member H.
rom the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a detachable handle constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be" obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and -modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: In combination with a broom head or the like having an outstanding doweL- said dowel having a groove extending lengthwise thereof and open at the outer end of the dowel, the inner end of the groove being closed with the base wall of the groove immediately adjacent to said inner closed end outwardly curved, a tubular handle member open at one end, said handle member including a connecting seam extending inwardly therealong, the dowel telescoping within the handle member thru the open end thereof with the seam of the handle member within the groove of the dowel, the curved portion of the base wall of the groove and the adjacent end portion of the seam of the handle member having close contact, the curved portion of the base wall of the groove F serving as a cam to cause the handle member to tightly hold the handle member to the dowel.
EDWIN J. VEEDER.
