STRAW-CUTTER.

Specification of Letters Eatent No. 22,072, dated November 16, 1858.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

lle itv known that we, VLLSON Genna* and Manno); MeFisriEn, of the town of Chattanooga, Hamilton county, State of TemieeLm see, have invented a` new and Improved Straw-Cutter; and we do hereby declare that the followinl is a full and exact deeeription thereof, reference being,` had to the aeeonipanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, in whieh- A represents the treadle or lever. B the knife. (a) the Connection of the knife with the lever. C the double leafed wooden Spring and the connection of the lever with the Spring which elerates the knife.

D is a` leather strap on the end of the treedle forming a stirrnp in which the right footis: placed to assist the Spring te raise the knife Should it from any canse become wedged between the jaws when the ent is made.

E ie a lever worked with the right hand and serres to press the Straw firmly into the bohP while being` ent, Causing' the knife to ent nmeh easier.

F is an uprighti in which both levers` work.

G is a board attached to the treadle ineving up and down in front of the knife regnlatingl the length of cutting the Straw.

The entire machine is simple and easy of construction and can be made aty a :small expense the whole being wood except the knife and jawS, which are of iron, the blade which is of Steel is welded to the bare of iron at eaeh end forminga right angle triangle.

Thie machine is worked in the following manner riz: The knife being raised by the ,spring7 the Straw ie placed in the box and shored forward wit-h the left hand or rather -under the lever worked with the righthand Until it Comes in Contact with the board (l. when the foot is placed in the Stirrup at the end of the treadle and the knife is brought down between the jawe. and raised again before the press is taken o5 the straw. then the press is slightly raised. the straw shoved forward and the ent repeated. which may be done three of four times per Second.
