This invention relates to typographical slug casting machines wherein a slug or typebar is cast in a slotted mould from a line of matrices presented thereto in casting position.
More particularly the invention relates to machines in which a mould is moved rectilinearh after casting to a position in which the cast slu is ejected from the mould, and back to the casting position after ejection.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of mould adapted for use in such a machine, whereby adjustments for a change of measure and body size of the slug to be produced are facilitated and efficient cooling of the mould is permitted, and which can be employed conveniently in conjunction with a spine plate movable relatively to the mould to sever the sprue by or through the movement of the mould from the casting position to the ejecting position, v With these objects in view a mould according to the invention comprises a body member, the casting face of which forms one side wall of the mould, said member being permanently connected to means for reciprocating the mould between the casting and ejecting positions, a cap member releasably secured to the body member, the casting face of which cap member forms the opposite side wall of the mould, with liners interposed between the cap member and body member to constitute the end walls of the mould and to determine the length and body size of the slug to be produced. Both cap member and body member are preferably formed with cooling 5 chambers and connections therefrom to flexible pipes for the circulation of cooling medium through said chambers in the different position of the mould, According to a further feature of the invention, the mould may be provided with a sprue plate through which metal is injected into the mould, and which forms a sprue at the foot of the cast slug, said sprue plate being carried with the mould during the initial stage of its recti- 5 linear movement towards the ejecting position, and arrested at an intermediate stage of such movement, thus effecting the severance of the sprue'from the slug and permitting the sprue and slug to be separately ejected from the plate and mould, respectively, when the latter has reached the slug ejecting position.
One constructional form of apparatus according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the following description the invention is assumed to be applied to machines wherein a line of matrices X and spacebands Y is sustained in 15 casting position in an elevator I which is vertically reciprocable in a vice frame 2, and wherein a slotted mould, hereinafter referred 'to as awhole by the reference numeral 3, is advanced against the said line to close the mould slot at 20 the front, the metal pot mouth piece 5 being also advanced to close the mould slot at the rear a prior to the ejection of molten metal through the said mouth piece to cast a slug.
In the operation of machines of this kind, 25 it is known to provide mechanism whereby, after casting, the metal pot mouth piece and mould are retracted and the mould moved rectilinearly downwardly into operative relationship with mechanism by which the cast slug is ejected from 30 the mould, the elevator meanwhile being operated for the purpose of removing therefrom the line already cast and introducing thereinto a succeeding line; consequently, except insofar as it is necessary to refer to these operations for an 35 understanding of the present invention, it is to be assumed that they are or may be carried out in known manner by mechanisms which per se form no part of the present invention and which, therefore, are not herein described in detail.
In the constructional form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the mould comprising abody' portion 4 and cap 3 is vertically reciprocable in guides 6 integral with or secured to a mould slide 1, the latter, in known manner, 45.
tween the casting and ejecting positions. To this central body portion l, two side pieces 9 are secured, for example, by bolts I0. These side pieces 9 extend laterally into the guides 6 and upwardly beyond the casting face of the central body portion l, so that their upper ends flank the cap member 3 of the mould. These side pieces are positioned transversely of the body 4 and cap 3 by long key pieces ll forming part of the side pieces 9 and engaging key-ways in the body 4 and cap 3. The width of the mould slot is defined, as usual, by liners l2 inserted between the body t and cap 3, and the cap 3 is secured in place against the'end liners 12 by a cover plate l3 secured to the outer face of the cap, for example, by screws M and dowels l5, and also secured to the side pieces 9 by screws 16.
The body portion 3 is formed with a longitudinal cooling chamber ll communicating, through branch passages l8 near opposite ends of the chamber, with flexible pipes l9, said branch passages having threaded openings to which connections to the said pipes are attached. Similarly the cap 3 is formed with a longitudinal cooling chamber 28 and branch passages 2!, which latter communicate with openings in the cover plate it which are threaded to accommodate connections 22 to flexible pipes 23. To ensure a water-tight connection between the branch passages 25 and the flexible pipes 23, there are provided conical shaped washers 2 3 which are tightly gripped between the connections 22 and the outlets of the passages 2i.
It will be understood that the flexible pipes 59, 23 are connected to a source of supply of cooling fluid for the purpose of circulating the latter through the cooling chambers in the cap 3 and body t as desired. With this construction of mould, the size of the mould slot may be varied conveniently by adjusting the screws l4 and H5 retaining the cover plate in place on the side pieces and over the cap 3, raising the latter and changing the liners !2. If a different form of mould is desired, such change may be effected by removing the cap 3 and substituting therefor another cap of the desired diiferent form. Throughout any such changes the body portion 6 and side pieces 9 remain in fixed relationship to the operating link 8 and guides 6.
In the construction illustrated the mould slide l is formed witth further guide members 25 engaging a depending plate or slide 26 formed integral with a sprue plate 2'! which is located against the rear of the mould 3 when the latter is in the casting position, as shown in Figure 2 and in full lines in Figure 1, with the slot in the sprue plate in register with the mould slot and aligned with the outlet of the metal pot mouth piece 5.
When the parts are in the just-mentioned casting position, the sprue plate 27 is supported by resting upon studs IE8 projecting rearwardly from the mould side members 9, and when in the ejecting position by resting upon studs 29 projecting forwardly from the mould slide. The ejecting position of the sprue plate 2'! is shown in dot-and-dash lines in Figure-1, and in Figure 3.
With this arrangement, after a slug has been cast by injection of metal into the mould slot through the sprue plate 2?, the latter is secured to the mould 3 by the sprue which extends from the mould slot into the slot of the sprue plate from the foot of the slug, and as the mould is moved downwardly by the cam 41 and levers 48, 49 after casting, the sprue plate 21 is carried downwardly with it until arrested in the position indicated by the dot-and-dash lines in Figure 1, by contact with the studs 29, from which stage the mould 3 continues its movement to the slug ejecting position (see Figure 3, and dot-and-dash lines in Figure 1), this continued movement after the arrest of the sprue plate 21 serving to sever the sprue from the slug.
At the completion of the downward movement of the mould 3 the mould slot is located opposite an ejector blade 3! and the sprue plate 21 is positioned in its guides with its slot opposite an auxiliary ejector blade 3!. The auxiliary ejector blade 3! is mounted to slide in a bracket 32 secured to the vice frame 2 and is connected by a link 33 to an upstanding arm 3-4 fast to a rock shaft 35 extending across the vice frame 2. One end of the rock shaft 35 extending beyond the respective side of the vice frame 2, is provided with a depending arm 36 having a pin-and-slot connection with the forward end of a rod 31 mounted to slide horizontally in guide brackets 38 secured to the vice frame 2, and extending rearwardly beyond the mould slide 1 in the path of an extension 39 of the ejector Bil.
The parts just described normally occupy the position in which they are shown in Figure 2, the auxiliary ejector 3! being retracted under the influence of a spring 18 acting on the arm 36. The ejector 30 is advanced to the position in which it is shown in Figure 3 to eject the cast slug from the mould, for example, as illustrated in Figure 5, by a cam 50, lever 5!, link 52, lever arm 53 and link 55. During such advance the extension 39, acting upon the rod 37, efiects rearward movement of the auxiliary ejector 3i whereby the sprue 27 is ejected from the slot in the sprue plate 2? on to a flapper plate H by which it is guided through an aperture 12 in the mould slide 1. The flap-per plate t! is fixed to a shaft 55, carried in bearings at the rear of the mould slide 7. On one end of the shaft 55, a lever arm 58 is secured, and a link 57 connects said arm to an arm 58 fast on a shaft 59, which latter also carries an arm 66 extending into an aperture 6! in the mould slide I. When the mould is in casting position, a spring 62 acting on the arm 58, holds the plate a! in an inoperative position, as shown in Figure 2. As the mould descends, the sprue plate slide 26 runs out of contact with the arm 6%], allowing the latter to be moved clockwise by the spring 82, thus moving the flapper plate 4i into its operative position in which it is shown in Figure 3. On the return of the mould 3 to casting position the sprue plate 2'! remains stationary in the sprue ejecting position until it is picked up by the studs 28 on the mould, whereafter the plate is moved with the mould to the casting position. During this movement, the slide- 26 contacts with the plate 4| and arm 68 and returns these parts to the position in which they are shown 7 in Figure 2.
It is to be understood that the downward and upward movements of the mould occur in the retracted position of the mould slide, and that the position of the mould slide shown in Figures 2 and 3 is the forward position thereof occupied only during casting and ejection. Studs 43 carried by the mould side pieces 9 serve to accurately locate the latter in the casting and ejecting positions by engaging sockets M on the vice frame 2 as the mould slide moves forwardly to the casting and ejecting positions.
The constructional forms above-described have 2,207,028 been chosen as illustrative of the nature of the invention and exemplifying one mode of construction and operation by which the invention may be carried out, and it is to be understood that details of the construction and the directions of movement of the mould and sprue plate may be varied in accordance with the requirements of the machine to which the invention is to be applied. For example, the sprue plate and mould may be normally locked together by spring latches which are released and re-engaged by relatively fixed cams in the path of the mould between the casting and ejecting positions.
Having described our invention, we declare that what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mould comprising a body member, a cap member releasably and adjustably secured to upward extensions of the body member and liners interposed between said members, of guides in which said mould is reciprocable rectilinearly and means connected with one of said mould members operable to reciprocate the mould between slug casting and slug ejecting positions.
2. In a typographical slug castingmachine, the combination with a mould comprising a body member, a cap member releasably secured to the body member and liners interposed between said members, of a sprue plate through which metal is injected into the mould, guides in which said mould and sprue plate respectively are reciprocable rectilinearly, means connected with one of said mould members operable to reciprocate both mould and sprue plate in the respective guides fromand to casting position, and means adapted to arrest the sprue plate before the mould has completed its movement from casting position.
3. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mould comprising a body member formed with a cooling chamber, a cap member formed with a cooling chamber and releasably secured to the body member and liners interposed between said members, of guides in which said mould is reciprocable rectilinearly, means connected with one of said mould members operable to reciprocate the mould between slug casting and slug ejecting positions, and flexible pipes adapted to maintain connection with the.
respective cooling chambers throughout the movements of the mould.
4. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with mechanism according to claim 2, of an ejector operable to eject a slug forwardly from the mould and an auxiliary ejector adapted to eject a sprue rearwardly from the sprue plate.
5. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mould comprising a body member, a cap member reelasably secured to the body member, liners interposed between said members, and side members between which said body member, cap member and liners are secured, of guides engaged by said side members and in which the mould is reciprocable rectilinearly and means connected with the body member operable to reciprocate the mould between slug casting and slug ejecting positions.
6. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mould comprising a body member, a cap member releasably secured to the body member, liners interposed between said members, and side members between which said body member, cap memberand liners are secured,
of a vice frame in which a composed matrix line is sustained in, casting position, a mould slide movable to carry the mould towards and away from the vice frame, guides on the mould slide engaged by the side members of the mould, means connected with the body member of the mould operable to reciprocate the mould between slug casting and slug ejecting positions, a sprue plate through which metal is injected into the mould,
guides on the mould slide in which said sprue plate is reciprocable with the mould to and from a position intermediate the casting and ejecting positions of the mould, a slug ejector carried in the mould slide operable to eject a slug forwardly from the mould, and an auxiliary ejector carried in the vice frame operable by the operative movement of the slug ejector to eject a sprue rearwardly from the sprue plate when the latter is in the said intermediate position.
7. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with mechanism according to claim 6, of an adjustable plate adapted to guide an ejected sprue through an aperture in the mould slide.
