IMl ROVEMENT IN TOE-WEIGHTS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,646, dated October 14, 1879; application filed March 5, 1879.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST W. NoYEs, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Toe-Weight, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable toe-weight for horseshoes; and it consists of a weight with a longitudinal dovetailed groove, which engages an inclined bar rising from the edge of the shoe. In the groove is a spring-pawl adapted to engage holes in the bar, whereby it can be fixed at ditterent points to adapt it to the throw of the animals feet.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the toe-weight and bar, and Fig. 2 is a top view or plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the shoe, having at the toe a bar, B, extending upward and backward at an inclinecoincident to the angle of the hoof to which it is applied. This bar has chamfered edges a a. .e
0 represents the toe-weight, having on its inside a longitudinal dovetailed groove, 12, in a recess wherein is pivoted a pawl, a, controlled by a spring, d, and having on its front a stud or pin, d, and at the top a thumb-piece, e. In the bar are holes 01, in line with the stud at, so that it will fall with them as itis moved up and down.
By moving this weight up and down it can be adjusted to the gait of the horse. It can also be employed as a side weight for horseshoes by placing the bar on one or the other side of the shoe.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to hold the toe-weight of a horseshoe to a clip arranged on the front of said shoe by means of a spring-actuated device; but
What I claim as new and of my invention 1s In a combined horseshoe and toe-weight, the spring-pawl c, seated in the groove 6, and adapted to engage the holes (1 in the bar 13, in combination with the bar B and weight 0, to regulate the position of the latter on the bar, substantially as described.
