Description

UlillED @TAT THOMAS C. BALL, OF KEENE, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
INFANTS CRADLE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 22,056, dated November 16, 1858.
'lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, "f1-:reinas C. BALL, of Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State or New Hampshire, have invented a nen7 and useful Device for Rocking Cradles; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being inade to the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view.
The nature of this invention consists in having pieces, which are Worked by cranks driven by l`springs, or other equivalent inechanisin, arranged to litt alternately on opposite sides ot a cradle, with sul'licient torce to cause it to rock, er when it is set to rocking, to maintain the nionientuni and keep it in motion. lt is constructed in the ollov'- ing manner:
represents a portion et a cradle, to which this is attached.
B is a frame Werk for the Workingparts. The spring and gearing; for operating` the cranks is incased therein, and is not shown in the drawing as such inechanisin is Well known.
C, C, are the cranks which work the pieces D, D,-their crank pins 'are set at opposite points, so that D, D, strike alternately on the iioor or surface on which the cradle rocks, and litt on its opposite sides, to assist in reversing its niotion and to give an inipetus, suliicientto overcoine its tendency to rest. D, D, are guided by the slot E, and erossbar F.
G is a key t'or Winding up the spring, which coils around the shaft lL-there is a toothed-Wheel on the shaft H, Which is connected to it by a ratchet and paivl, and receives inotion thereby as the spring` un- Winds, it nieshes with a sinall pinion on shaft which has another large wheel that Works in pinions on the shafts or the cranks C, C, and transmits the inotion to theni. T he niotion of the cranks as the cradle rocks, acts an escapenient to regulate the un- Winding` of the spring.
Tc putit in operation, the spring, is Wound up, by turning the key Gr, and the cradle being set in motion, the cranks C, C, and pieces D, D, operate in the inanner described to keep the cradle rocking, until the spring' is run down, Without requiring the attention of a` person.
`What claim as iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
rlhe arrangement of the cranks C, C, pieces D, D, slot E, and cross bar E, in coni- 'bination With the spring, and gearing operating in the manner explained. for 'the purposes specified.
