` This invention relates to new and useful improvements in handbag plaits.

Heretofore, it has been customary to decorate the outer material of handbags with plaits held down with stitches. This construction has numerous disadvantages, including the tearing lof the threads, which then releases the plaits, the perforation of the material by the sewing needle during the application of the stitches, and the visibility of some of the thread of the stitches from vthe front of the handbag.

This invention proposes the construction of plaits upon the outer material of handbags and the like, which are held down with metallic clips mounted on the back of the plaits. It is proposed that these clips be of steel, or other metal, or other materials, capable of firmly and securely holding the plait formation. An advantagev of the clip. construction for holding the plaits resides in the factfthat the material of the handbag -isunpunctured that the possibility of the cotton threads usually used in holding the plaits, breaking has been removed, and that the plaits will not open during the life of the handbag.

Still further the invention proposed to characterize the clips by tubular sheet metal pieces having split open sides with the edge .portions thereof forming gripping jaws engaging and holding the back of the plaits and so holding the plaits information.

Still further the invention proposes various forms of clips of various sizes and shapes, each adapted to yhold the plaits as previously mentioned.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference Willbe had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The handbag plaits, in accordance with this invention, are formed in the outer sheet ii) of a handbag. This outer sheet I0 has a areas ma, IDb, etc., bent inwards from its outer face, forming plaits. These plaits may be of desired lengths and may be spaced relative to each other in desired patterns and designs, depending merely upon taste. Clips II and I2 are mounted `1li on the back of the plaits for holding them in formation..

. More specifically, the bent in areas .IIJa are formed by slitting the sheet I0 with cuts I3 eX- tended in from one of the sides thereof. These 20 slits form free edge portions I 3a andv I 3ID which are placed adjacent each other to the rear of the material I0. The clips II are mounted upon these edge portions I3@ and I3b as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The clips II hold the 25 edge portions I3EL and ,I3b in a manner to maintain and hold the bent in areas-Ilia.

Each clip II comprises a `,tubular sheet of material having a split open side I Ia extending from the top to the bottom.- The material to the sides 30 of the slit IIa form gripping jaws which are engaged upon the edge portions I 3a and I3b. The

vclip is pressed into position to firmly maintain the plaited areas.

The plaited areas Ilb are arranged at inner 35 points upon the sheet Iii. The clips I2 are'used to maintain these inward bent portions. Each clip I2Vis formed from a tubular sheet of material split open at one side IZE.v The edge portions of this split are cut away so as to present relatively 40 pointed gripping jaws I 2b. It is these gripping jaws I2b which grip and hold the inward bent areas forming the plaits I0".

It must be borne in mind that various designs and patterns may be formed upon the sheet material I0 by arranging the plaits and the holding clips thereof in various formations. Fig. l, showing one particular design is merely by way of illustration.

The outer material I0 is shown to have a flange 50 portion I 0 bent inwards from the top edge thereof. Piping material I5 is interposed between this flange Illc and the flange I6c of a top strip of material I6. This outer material may be used in the construction of a handbag. While one par- 55 plurality of l()y ticular shape of outer material has been shown it should be borne in mind that this is only by way of illustration since various designs and shapes of handbags may be constructed embodying this invention.

In Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive, another modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the construction of the clips for holding the plaits. According to this form of the invention each clip includes a tubular metal sheet piece I8 having slit open ends with the edge portions |8 thereof forming gripping jaws for gripping and holding the plait 20. A longitudinally extending rod or strip 2| is mounted upon or connected with the tubular piece I8 and extends longitudinally along the length of the plait 20. A plurality of auxiliary tubular clips 22 are mounted upon the rod 2| at various points alo-ng the length of the rod and engage the plait 20 for assisting in holding the plait in its formation. With this arrangement a relatively long plait may be formed.

Each auxiliary tubular piece 22 has a slit open side with the edge portions 22a thereof forming gripping jaws for gripping and holding the material of the plait. Each tubular piece 22 has several prongs 24 stamped from the material thereof and engaging over the edge portions of the rod 2| for assisting in holding the tubular piece 22 in position thereon. A plurality of niches and complementary projecting portions 23 are formed upon the adjacent faces of the rod 2| and the tubular pieces 22 for frictionally holding these parts together. These niches 23 are formed substantially on the same elevation as the prongs 24. They serve to frictionally hold the parts in relatively xed positions. c

If it is desired to change the length of the plait 20, the lowermost tubular pieces 22 may be removed from the rod 2|. In the particular form the invention shown on the drawing the rod is integral with and projects from one edge of the top tubular piece I8.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

l. In a handbag, a sheet of outer material having areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and clips mounted on the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said clips comprising tubular sheet material pieces having split open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws.

2. In a handbag, a sheet of outer material having areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and clips mounted on the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said clips comprising tubular sheet material pieces having split open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws, said tubular pieces having the material along the edges of said open sides cut away to form pointed gripping jaws.

In a handbag, a sheet of outer material having areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and clips mounted on the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said inwardly bent areas of said outer material being cut open to form anges, said flanges being overlapped, and said clips being mounted upon said anges.

In a handbag, a sheet of outer material having areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and-clips mounted on the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said clips comprising tubular sheet material pieces having split open sides with the ,edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws, a longitudinally extendingy rod mounted on said tubular pieces and extend-ing longitudinally of the plaits, and a plurality of tubular sheet metal pieces having slit open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws and mounted on said rods.

In a handbag, a sheet of outer material having areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and clips mounted on` the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said clips comprising tubular sheet material pieces having split open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws, a longitudinally extending rod mounted on said tubular pieces and extending longitudinally of the'plaits, and a plurality of tubular sheet metal pieces having slit open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws and mounted on said rods, each tubular piece being provided with prong portions stamped from the material thereof engaging the edge portions of said rod.

In a handbag, a sheet of outer material hav-A ing areas bent inwards from its outer face forming plaits, and clips mounted on the backs of said plaits for holding the formation thereof, said clips comprising tubular sheet material pieces having split open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws, a longitudinally extending rod mounted on said tubular pieces and extending longitudinally of the plaits, and a plurality of tubular sheet metal pieces having slit open sides with the edge portions thereof forming gripping jaws and mounted on said rods, each tubular piece being provided with prong portions stamped from the material thereof engaging the edge portions of said rod, and interengaging projections and niches on the adjacent faces'of said rod and certain of said tubular pieces for frictionally holding them together. f
