Description

J. A. CHASE & P. W. ARNOLD.
' Coffee-Urn.
' WITNESSES INLSNTOR: Z. I Md MM 2 .6.6.3...
I- 47 BY Mum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIAN A. CHASE AND PRESERVED W. ARNOLD, OF PAWTUOKET, R.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFEE-URNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,908, dated September 23, 1879; application filed July 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that we, JULIAN A. CHASE and PRESERVED W. ARNOLD, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Urn, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide an urn with several compartments, and having a reversible standby which it can 'be held in position for use on the table, or adapted to sit directly on the stove or fire, as maybe desired.
It consists of a reversible stand pivoted to the urn, and adapted to secure the urn in position for use on the table, and to be held up in a reversed position when the urn is placed on the stove or over the fire.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional side elevation of our improvement in position for use. Fig. 2 represents the urn when prepared to sit on the stove; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the urn on line .12 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A is the body of the urn. Inside it is divided by a vertical partition, B, into two compartments, a I), one of which serves as a receptacle for coffee, and the other for tea or hot water. Other subdivisions of the body may be made to provide other receptacles, if desired. Each of the compartments is provided with a faucet.
O O are standards rising from a horseshoeshupecl metal plate, D. In the upper parts of the standards are slots 0, and through these the rivet-headed pivots-d are passed and fixed into the sides of the urn, thus securing it to the standards, allowing it, however, to swing freely and to have a slight up-and -down movement.
Above the slot 0 an open slot, 01, is made in the ends of the standards, and below are other slots, 6, with side openings. Above pivots d are similar pivots f, fixed in the side of the urn.
The under side of plate D is covered with a plate, h, of wood or other suitable non-heatconducting material, so that when set on the table the heat from the contents of the urn will be prevented from injuring the table.
The mode of using the'device is as follows: \Vheu the urn is placed upon the table the stand is swung down on the pivots, and the pivots f allowed to enter the slots (1, whereby the urn is held firmly in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1.
When to be set on the stove the urn is raised so that the pivots f willclear the slots d. The stand is then swung to the front of the urn into a reversed position, the open end of the base allowing the urn to pass within the same, and when the standards are in an upright posi-tion'ipivots f, entering slots 6, hold the stand in a reversed position, so that the body can be set directly on the stove, as shown in Fig. 2.
This invention, by furnishing a reversible stand, enables the urn to be adapted to its two positions for use and for keeping its contents heated quickly and easily; and, further, by furnishing several receptacles for coffee, tea, hot water, and other things of that kind, enables a mutiplicity of vessels usually employed about the table to be dispensed with.
Havingthus fully describedourinvention, we claim as new and desire to secure .by Letters Patent- A stand composed of horseshoeshaped metal plate D, with non-conducting plate h, and having standards 0 G and closed slots 0, through which the urn-pivots cl are passed, and open slots 11 e, in combination with the body A, provided with the pivots f, whereby the said stand is adapted to support the urn, as in Fig. 1, or to be reversed and held in a position to allow the urn to stand on its bottom, as in Fig. 2, substantially as described.
