UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA W. JONES, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVEMENT lN BOOK-BINDERS COMBINED EVENING-UP AND COMPBESSING TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,734, dated September 16, 1879; application filed August 9, 1879. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA W. J onus, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Binders Oombined Eveningp and Compressing Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved machine, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line a; as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this inventionis to furnish an improved evening-up table provided with a device for smashing the head and back folds of the sheets to take out the swell, so that the sheets may lie more solid and compact, thus greatly facilitating the handling of the work.
The invention consists in the combination of the movable or sliding bracket provided with the perforated ribs, the adjustable bracket provided with the perforated ribs, the wide pivoted bars, the nut and swiveled screw, the connecting-rod and treadle, and the cord, pulleys, and weight, or equivalent spring, with an evening-up table, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the frame-work of the machine, to the top of which is attached a table, B. The table B is provided, at its rear edge and at one end, with upright flanges or boards 0 D, to form an evening-up table. The end board D is made strong and firm, to adapt it to serve as the stationary head of the compressor or back and head smasher.
E F are two brackets, of about the width and height of the end board, D. The inner bracket, E, is provided with ribs or tongues, which slide in grooves or slots in the table B, and side board, 0, so that it may move back and forth squarely.
Upon the rear side of the bracket E and the forward side of the bracket F are formed Vertical ribs G, to which are hinged the outer ends of the bars H, the inner ends of which are hinged to each other, and which are made wide, so that they may press the movable bracket E forward evenly.
Several holes are formed in the ribs G to receive the pivoting-pins, so that the bars H may be raised and lowered, as the size of the folded sheets to be smashed may require, to bring the pressure against the center of resistance.
To the base of the outerbracket, F, is attached a nut, I, the neck of which passes through a slot in the table B.
To a support, J, attached to or formed upon the lower side of the rear end of the table B is swiveled a hand-screw, K, which fits into the nut I, so that the position of the bracket F may be adjusted by turnin g the screw K.
To the center of the pivot that hinges the inner ends of the bars H to each other is attached the upper end of a connecting-rod,"L, the lower end of which is pivoted to the treadle M The rear end of the treadle M is pivoted to a rod, N, attached to the rear lower part of the frame A, and its forward end projects into such a position that it may be readily operated by the workman with his foot, leaving his hands free to adjust and even-up the sheets.
To the treadle M is attached the end of a cord or strap, 0, which passes over guidepulleys 1?, attached to the under side of the table B, and to its other end is attached a weight, Q, of suflicient size to raise the adjacent ends of the toggle-bars H and draw back the movable bracket E, when sufficient pressure has been applied to the sheets to break down or compress their folds.
If desired, the cord, pulleys, and weight 0 P Q may be replaced by an equivalent spring.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the movable or sliding bracket E, provided with the perforated ribs G, the adjustable bracket F, provided with the perforated ribs G, the wide pivoted bars H, the nut and swiveled screw I K, the connecting-rod and treadle L M, and the cord or strap, pulleys, and weight O P Q, or equivalent spring, with the evening-up table A B O D, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSHUA W. JONES.
