IMPROVEM'ENT IN'COUCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,697, dated September 16, 1879; application filed February 21, 1879.
section of the couch used as a double bed. Fig.
4 represents an adjustable arm of the couch. Fig. 5 is an end view of an adjustable arm. Fig. 6 shows an end of the arm with slotted ear or lug.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a useful article of furniture, serving the double purpose of a seat and couch by day and a perfeet double bed by night, simple in its construction, and adjustable to its difl'erent uses with case. When the couch is unfolded it forms a bed of ample dimensions, that rests firmly on its permanent supportthe clothing-recepta.
ole. It has ample room for bed-clothin g an d pillows, and has the advantageof thorough ventilation (the bottom of .the clothing-receptacle being slatted) and protection from dust.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the couch, which may be of any desired dimensions, containing the clothing-receptacle B, which is moved in and out like an ordinary drawer.
The seat G of the couch and the arms D D are upholstered.
Pivoted on pins a in the arms are rods or extension-arms b, that are bent at right angles at one end and support the back of the couch E by entering the slots" 0 in its ends, thus forminga sliding joint. This back is also up" holstered, like the seat, and its position when the piece of furniture is used as a couch is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When it is to be used as a bed the back is raised perpendicularly until the arms b, that engage in the slots 0, permit the back to fall forward and rest immediately over the seat of the couch. Then the clothing-receptacle is drawn out to its full extent, (the stops d prevent itfrom 00min gout too far,) and the bed-clothing, &c., removed. The back is then turned back to rest upon B 5 then the adjustable arms F F, which are also properly upholstered, are secured to the ends of the back E by hooking the slotted lugs or ears f f over the pins 9 g, and inserting the ears h into the narrow space between the extensionarms I) b and the ends of the back E. The result is a strong comfortable double bed.
All the parts of this couch are simple and easy to repair or keep in order, and it may be constructed in a plain or ornamental style, as may be most desirable.
The peculiar adjustment of the back E not only increases its supporting-power whenthe article is used as a couch, but it adds much to its symmetry.
Having thus described m y in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, in a couch, with the body A, of the drawer B, seat 0, arms D, slotted couch c E, pins a, and rods 0, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
