Thef'present 'invention relates to containers,
and more particularly, to vanity cases and other containers designed for personal use. One object of the invention is to provide a 5" container having main and supplementary covers biased to open position by spring means and releasably held in closed rposition by fastening means which can be released by the actuation of a single push piece or other member operable 1"(5' externally of the container.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a vanity case or similar container having mainv and supplementary hinged covers biased to open position by spring means and releasably heldinv closed position by fastening means operable in succession to release the main cover first and subsequently to release the supplementary cover.`
A' yet further object. ofI the invention is the provision of a Vanity case or .similar'container z 'having main and supplementary covers pivotally associated with the container on parallel axes and releasably held in'closed yposition by catches which may be released by the actuation of a single push piece or other'member'operated externally of the container.
A yet further object of the scribed with improved vfastening means for-re-v leasably holding the covers in closed position..
The above objects of the invention and other 30 objects ancillary thereto willbe best understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings:
In the drawings: f. f Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a vanity ca se conplementary cover;
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2;
Fig. '1 is a View similar modication;
Fig. 8 is a View similar to'lig. 3, showing another modication;. .f 1
. Fig. 9 is a detail'sectionalview on'the of Fig.f8. 'y
to Fig. 3, showing. a
line 9-'-9 l invention is to provide a multi-cover container of the class de-.
structed inaccordance with the .present inven' Fig. 5 isa fragmentary front View of the sup- (ci. 22o- 55) Referring to the drawings in detail, and first to Figs. 1 to 6, the container is illustrated as a vanity case I and comprises an outer receptacle having a bottom wall l2, side walls I4 and I6, and end walls I8; Said receptacle is'provided 5 with amain cover r2l) which is hinged to the side wall I4 by av spring hinge 22, of anysuitableconstruction, which tends to move said cover to open position. The cover 20 is provided'with a rigid catch 24 by which the cover may be releas- 10 ablyvr held in closed position under the control of a movable latch 26, operated by a push piece 21 extending through the opening 29 in the side wall I6;
As here shown, the vanity caseI HJ may be pro- 15 28 is provided with a cover 34 pivotally associated 20 n with thecase, on an axis parallel tothe pivotal axis of the cover 20 by the spring hinge 3 6. Said hinge 3e may be ofany suitable construction but as-here shown `it is `constituted by the bent pin 38 extending through the eye 40 of the coverv 34 g5 and having its ends projected within bearing v members 42 formed in said frame 32. The front edge of the cover has a depending iiexible catch v4,4 provided with la .projection 46 arranged `to engage. a part of the container, more Asrieciiically 30 the frame 32, at the front edge 48 of, an Aopening 5 0, for releasably holding said cover 34 in closed As here shown,-the cover is providedwith a gasket 52 to seal the joint between the lupper 35 edge' of the powder receptacle 28rand the cover. Also, as hereshown, the cover 34 is formed with a depression 54xwithin which a powder puff (not shown)l 4may be placed. y fI'he'latch 26 is constituted by theout-turned o .upper edge portion of a spring strip 3 I positioned within the container, extending longitudinally of ythe side wall I6, and secured at oneend tothe frame 32 in any suitable manner, preferably by a rivet 133.. The push piece is carri-ed by th'espring 5 vstrip3l, being preferably' soldered thereto, but said push piece may be separate from said spring vstrip in4 contacting relation therewith. Thus, by pressing on the push-piece 21,v the 'strip' 3| is flexed' away from the Wall l'and the'latch 26 is 50 Lreleased from engagement with the .catch 24, thereby permitting the Aspring hinge 22 to move the main cover 20 to open position.
. In accordance with the presentinvention, provision isv made for moving the exiblecatch 44 u dii portion 35 of the spring strip 3| whereby said spring strip 5S may be moved toward thev side wall i4 into engagement with the catch 44 to iiex the latter out of engagement With the front edge 48 oi the opening 50 in the frame 32, thereby to release the supplementary cover 34 to permit the spring hinge 36 to move said supplementary cover to open position. Thus,
when both main and supplementary covers 24' and 34, respectively, are in closed position, it is possible to open only the mainv cover 2G or both said main and supplementary covers by the actuationl oi the push piece 21. If it is desired to open only the main cover 20, the push piece 21 is pressed inwardly a distance sufficient only to move the latch 26 out of engagement with the catch 24, and if it is desired also to open the supplementary cover 24, a further movement of the push piece 21 in the same direction is effective to bring the free end 35 of the springmeml ber b5, thereby flexing the latter into engagement with the catch 44 to force the latter out of engagement with the frame 32 in the manner hereinbefore described.
In themodicationshown in Fig. 7, the latch for .releasably engaging the catch 24 of the main cover 2@ and the spring member for exing the catch 44 to release the supplementary cover 34 are formed as integral `portions of a single spring member Si). Said spring member 66 extends longitudinally of the side Wall IG of the containeradjacenty to said side wall, and has a reilexed portion 62 which is secured vto the frame 32 in any suitable manner, as by rivets 64,
i whereby pressure on the push piece is effective to .move the spring member Evil `away from the side Wall. I6 thereby moving the latch V26 out of engagement with the catch 24 and subsequently,
I upon further movement of said push piece, to
engage the 4ilexible catch 44 to move the latter out of engagement with the frame 32, to permit only the cover Ztl to move to open. position, or v to permit both covers 2D and 34 tomove to Y, open position in succession in the order mentioned. i i
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the projection 41 on the rear sidey of the catch 44 engages the rear edge 49 of thel opening 50 in the frame. 32, and said catch 44 is released by nexing the same toward the sidev wallsyl instead of towardvthe opposite side wall i4, as ini the previously described constructions'. Also, in this modification, the means for releasingv the catchx44 diiers in construction from the catch releasing means of the other forms of the invention. As here shown, the catch' releasing means comprises an Lshaped spring strip, having one branch viti secured at one end to the irame why a rivet 12, anda branch 14 extending longitudinally ofthe side wall IS and carryingV at its free' end a cam block 'i6 provided` with inclined surfaces 18 andv 83 adapted .to be engaged. by the free end 35 of the spring member 3iand'bythe side edgex15 of the catch. 44,
Thus, when the push piece 21 is pressed inwardly to release the catchv 24, the spring member 3| is moved away from the side wall I 6 of the vanity case, and upon further movement of said push piece, after the catch 24 is released, the free end 35 of the spring member 3| is i brought into engagement With the inclined sure face 18 of the cam block 1li, thereby causing the branch 14 and the cam block 16 to move longitudinally of the side wall I6 or'of the front wall of the frame 32 whereby the inclined surface 80 oi said cam block engages the adjacent side ledge 15 of the catch 44 thereby causing said tourments iiiustrated herein is wen adapted to accomplish the objects of the present invention. It will be understood, however, that the invention is capable of other specific embodiments and that in each of the constructions herein disclosed, certain changes may be made. Therefore, while the constructions here shown are suggested as preferred, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be required by the appended claims considered with reference to the prior art.
