IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 ,943, dated November 2, i858.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN lV. COCHRAN, ot' the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certainlmprovements in Axle-Boxes for Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
Of the drawings, Figure l is a side view, in which part of the means are shown as if the side of the box had been removed; Fig. 2, a back or wheel end view; Fig. 3,21 plan or birdseye view,in which certain parts are shown as in a sectional view; and Figs. et and 5, a side and end view of a packing ring or collar to the axle.

The first feature ot" my improvement arises from the ring or collar a. lts position upon the axle is shown by red lines in Fig.v lt will be seen that it lits around the axle, and is so held to the axle by the pin-or screw c as to be turned or rotated with the axle, but by virtue ot' the slit a does not move with the axle in its lateral play. A recess is in the inner surface of this ring (marked c) for packing between it and the axle. The outer end of the collar is thickened for this recess c', and as this thick part extends outwardly it is ta pered and a groove or recess is formed in the tapered circumference n. This tapered extension and recess n gives facilities for packing and aids in making a tight joint. lt will be seen that the packing lying between the tapered or beveled surface of the collars extension and the beveled edge of t-he ring (l is clamped at an angle to the other portion ot the packing. It will also be seen that the packing e extends around the collar within the extension and around the axle beyond the collar. This arrangement admits ot the ready and complete tightening of the packing by the serew-boltsj j. These bolts j j are the only bolts used and serve to keep the various part-s of the box in position and to tighten all the packing.
The second feature of myimprovement depends upon the arrangement ot various parts of the box with the view of accommodating them to the wear of the brasses on the top of the bearing. It will be perceived that the lubricating-roller b is attached by the springshaft c to the door g, and that the door t, by the bolts j j, is attached to the disk B. Reccsses in the ears and lugs of the box A allow 0t` the movement of these bolts. A set or adjusting screw t' underneath the disk adjusts the disk, so that by simply slackening the bolts j j and turning the screw fi the lubricator, door, disk, packing, and bolts are all readily moved and adjusted. The lubricator is there fore always on the saine line in respectto the shaft which sustains it and in respect to the axle, and the door and the disk are also in the saine relation to the ends of the box.
Having thus fully and clearlj7 set ont the construction and operation ot my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 l. The sliding collar a, constructed and arranged upon the axle and in relation to the packing and the box, as herein set forth.
2. The arrangement of the lubricator, door, disks, packing, follower, and bolts, as herein described,whereby the whole may be adjusted to the bearing-brasses, as herein set out.
