Description

v. MERLO March 5;, 1940.
RAZOR Filed July 7, 1938 w 7 O 6 /A@ 5 v H k m 2 INVENTOR Patented Man-5, 1940 PATENT FFICE RAZOR Victor Merlo,
Elizabeth, N. J.
Application July 7, 1938, Serial No. 218,001
2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in razors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a razor of the so-called straight razor type 6 as distinguished from the'usual safety razor and comprises a holder for a removable relatively long blade with a handle pivotally connected to one end of the holder and openable and closable in the usual manner relative to the blade and holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a razor of the foregoing character wherein the holder that is substantially U- haped in crosssection and possessing a limited degree of resiliency' is designed for the removable support of a double edged blade that carries a longitudinally extending rib on each side face thereof intermediate the cutting edges of the blade and with which ribs, the side walls of the holder are resiliently engaged for retaining the blade in position in the holder, the side walls of the holder being fashioned to accommodate, the mounting of the ribs on the blade and with portions of said walls only lightly engaged with the blade at opposite sides of the ribs.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a razor of the foregoing character wherein the outer ends of the side walls of the holder are cut away with the outer end of the removable blade exposed by the cut away portion and provided with a finger grip to facilitate removal of the blade from the holder.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a razor constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away of the holder for the blade of the razor, with the razor blade in position in the holder;
Figure 3 is an edge elevational view of the blade having a longitudinally extending rib at each side with the ribs at each side notched adjacent each end to provide a finger grip;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1, showing the side ribs attached to the razor blade with the ribs engaged by side portions or walls of the holder;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view similar to Figure 4:, with the razor blade removed from the holder; and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view of another form of blade whereinthe side ribs form an integral part of the blade.
The razor is of the usual straight-edge type and comprises a back or holder designated in general by the reference character It! having the usual shank H at one end thereof to which the handle it is pivotally attached as at I3. The holder to as shown in Figures 4 and 5 is of general U-shape in cross-section and includes a pair of side walls designated in general by the reference character l 1, providing a top loop or rolled portion l5, the side walls It being bent or curved inwardly as at l5 adjacent the upper looped edge I5, then bent outwardly and downwardly to provide straight or flat side wall portions I! and thereafter arched inwardly at their lower ends as at IS. The inwardly curved portions 16 of the side walls I 4 and the inwardly curved lower edges I8of said side walls provide razor blade engaging surfaces Ifia and i801, respectively.
The holder Hl removably receives a double edged razor blade i9 having cutting edges 20 and said blade H] at each side thereof intermediate the cutting edges 29 and secured thereto in any preferred manner as indicated in Figure 4 a longitudinally extending rib 2| and said ribs adjacent each end thereof are provided with a finger notch 22 to facilitate placement of the blade I9 in the holder in and as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the outer ends of the side walls [4 of the holder Iii are arcuately cut away as at 23 to provide a clearance for the exposure of the finger notches 22 at the outer end of the blade [9 when the blade is completely received in the holder Ill as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to facilitate removal of the razor blade from the holder [0.
With the razor blade positioned in the holder as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 4, the flat or straight side wall portions ll of the holder Ill frictionally engage the ribs 2! for retaining the blade in the holder, the portions Mia and Mia slightly engaging the opposite sides of the blade I9 to steadythe blade in the holder, one cutting edge 20 of the blade projecting outwardly of the ends l8 of the holder as illustrated. The fiat wall portions ll of the side walls i4 flattens the skin of the face to a taut condition so that the tary requirements and the blade may be stropped while held in the holder, the blade being reversible to present either cutting edge thereof for use A modification of the blade I9 is shown in Figure 6,.the blade I9a shown in Figure 6, having the side ribs 2| a forming an integral part thereof, .the ribs 2la in effect being in the form of an elongated rectangular block with blade por tions 19a projecting from diametrically opposite sides thereof and intermediate the'other edges or side faces of the block.
From the above detailed description of the'invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and. scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a razor of the character described, a 'resilient blade holder having ahandle hinged to one end thereof, said holder being of substantially U-shape in cross section providing side walls, a longitudinally extending outwardly off- 2. In a razor of the character described, a resilient blade holder having a handle hinged to one end thereof, said holder being of. substantially .U-shape in cross section providing side walls, a longitudinally extending outwardly offe set portion carried by each side wall between the longitudinal side edges thereof a double edged razor blade removably positioned in the holder with the Walls of the holder frictionally engaged therewith and a reinforcing rib on each side of the blade engaged by the wallsgof the offset porwalls of the holder being cut away and each rib having a finger notch therein adjacent each end g with the outer end finger notches positioned in the cut away portions of the side Walls to facilitate removal of the blade from the holder.
