The gases are thoroughly mixed in the passage P because the gas under pressure entering through the ports 24 has an aspirating effect on the other constituent gas', drawing the latter in through'- the ports 25. This latter gas, which may also be under pressure'as it flows through the ports` In order to vary the'proportion of "the gasesY in the mixture for given regulator pressures, the ratio between the respective combined crossseotional areas ,of the passages 24 and 25 may be changed,.or if it is desired to affect the volume of the mixture which is delivered, the combined areas of each set of the passages may be altered' without varying the ratio between them. To
meet any new operating condition which requires a different type of heating or cutting flame, it is necessary. only to substitutey another nipple or injector for the member B. By changing the character of the flame in this manner the uncertainty of obtaining the proper flame which would be attached to regulating the pressures of the gases orto vvaryingvthe combined crosssectional area of one set of passages independently of the other is completely eliminated. I
A greater numberof inlet Vpassages than two may be provided in the body A for supplying several constituent gases, and, correspondingly, an increased number of port openings may be made in the member .B adjacent cach of the inlet passages for admitting the respective gases to the mixingchamber in the member B.
The mixerv A may be connected with a header H which serves as a distributing member to,
direct the mixed gases to anumber of nozzles N, as shown in Fig. 2. Thel threaded outlet I8 of the mixer is preferably joined by means of a extends longitudinally of the header, being closedoff at one end by a suitable plug 34. Leading from the chamber 33 are a number Yof small transverse passages 35 which are capable of supplying gas individually tothe nozzles N and which may be independently controlled by separate control or plug valves 36. The passages 35 and the threaded portions thereof into which the nozzles N are screwed are arranged in a row.
In further accord with this invention the nozzles N are so constructed as to be adjustable to any desired position. Asshown in Fig. 3, the nozzle N may comprise a nipple or base member 40 which is attachable .to the header H of a burner or to the outlet of any hightemperature gas burning apparatus. has a hemispherical portion 4I at one end which serves as the ball element-of a partial ball and socket joint. The rounded portion 4i of'the member 40 cooperates with a shell 42 which has a flared shoulder or socket 43 that is maintained or locked in contact with the member 4| in any desired position by a rotatable lookingnut 44. Thus, in the example'disclosed. each nozzle N in any plane within workable limits.
The base member 40' a machine or upon a mounting (not shown).
is adjustable laterally in all directions relatively to the axis of the branch passage 35 in the header H with which it communicates. Furthermore the nozzles are independently adjustable by a simple manipulation of the several nuts 44, and they may be positioned in line in the same plane with the passages 35, laterally t either side of that plane', and equal or unequal distances apart. It will also be evident 'that the nozzles N are easily detachablefor repair or replacement without vdistortion vormutilation thereof, since each nozzle may be screwed into the header H or removed therefr'orrifwithout interference with any other nozzle. l
In order to give ample space for the swinging movement of the shell 42 in relation to the member 40 when the locking nut 44 is loosened, a relatively large opening is made in the end of the nut through which the shell extends, the edges of the opening being rounded so as to permit the shell 42 to be readily positioned. In addition the nut 44 may have a sloping shoulder 45 for clamping the flared end 43 of the shell against the rounded portion of the base member 40. The shoulder 45 may be machined 'at an' angleso as to be substantially parallel with the locus of a tangent to the roundedportion of member 40 in order that the shell may be' easily moved when the nut is loosened. An annular space 46 between the base of the threads and the shoulder 45 of the nut insures additional space for the movement of the shell to extreme angular positions, oneof which is shown in the drawing.
The shell 42 may be a rigid cylindrical member serving to support a nipple 41 and tip 48 and a gas tight conduit, the inlet end of the tubing ,is fitted within a counterbore 5I in the passage of the member 4!) and is silver soldered, as at 52, the solder flowing into a recess in the member 40 and being machined after cooling to maintain the smooth, rounded contour of head 4i for the flared end 43 of the shell 42 to cooperate with. The opposite end of the flexible tubing 49 fits within the nipple 41 as in a sleeve. Solder may be employed .to effect tight joints between the tubing and the nipple and also between the nipple and the outer shell 42, thereby making a rigid mounting for the tip' 48 which is preferably screwed in a tight manner onto threads 53 provided on the nipple 41. The tip 48 may be a standard nozzle tting adapted to deliver a jet of gas ofthe character and volume desired.
A nozzle of the kind described is adjustable By loosening the nut 44, the tip 43 may be readily moved to vdirect a jet or flame at any angle against the vobject to be heated, and by tightening the nut thev nozzle is maintained in a rigid, locked position. The fullest advantage may be derived from the adjustability of the nozzles when the nozzles are attached to a header, such as the member H, the position of which is fixed within In such cases the angle of the flames issuing from the nozzles is easily changed by individually adjusting the nozzles.
The burner with adjustable nozzles is especially adapted for working glass. The glaze or polish `on the surface may be changed as to CII depth and other characteristics by varying theangle at which the flames from the nozzles impinge against the surface. 4 f
Although a preferred form of this invention has been described it will be understood that changes may be made without departing from the scopev of this invention as deiined in the appended claims.
