COMBINATION TAPER SQUARE Filed March 7, 1958 Patented Feb. l13,v

' j z'olai'ms. (o1. ca -91) This invention relates to combination tapersquares'and more particularly toia combination andv adjustable tool which 'may be `used as `an ordinary T-square for marking perpendicular lines and laying off rectangular figures'or'forms and alsofor laying off tapered figures or'forms, as Well as locating andmarking center linesbnboth rectangular and taperedldrawn figures or forms` and actual articles of such shape and also cir-` cular figuresgforms and articles.
The `invention has for its principal'object to produce a simple yet practical tool or device of the above noted character which ris readily and accurately. adjustedv and may.l be dis-assembled' i and re'assembled, at will, for each particular use.`
Another object is to'produce a" toolwhich is economically manufactured andv may be sold within areasonab-le price lrange forfuseby-the l-ordinary; mechanicl particularly in the woodlocating the center line thereof;
HFigure 2 is a top plan view showing the device applied to a circular iigure or object; l
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectiontaken on or about the line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is va section on the line 4-4 of Fig? ure 1; and
Figure 5 is a plan viewkshowing-the device applied to a tapered figure o'r object. Referring now to the drawing, the numeral AIiI designates a nat base bar or head memben'extending perpendicularly from the middle portion of which is a stem blade II which is detachably secured at its inner end tothe head member IIJ by a bolt I2 with a Wing nut I3 thereon. To hold the blade II against rotation in its perpendicu-l studs ill which are received in apertures provided therefor in said blade II on opposite sides ofthe pivot bolt I2. l
The parts IIJ and `I Lythus'far described, consti-l tute a T-square in their assembled relation, and
it may be here noted that when the head memf PATENT;
. member I by ksaid nuts 2I.
ber I 0 is detached from the blade Il it may be used as an ordinary spirit level in that --it is pro' vided at itsmiddle portion, on one side, with a tubular bubble lglass `I which is supportedvat its opposite ends on lugs I6 ,projectingfup-wardly.
from the face of the member Ill, by which mount? ing of the bubble glass'said member I0 `may be. -placed either edgewise or atwise when used as a level. y l, u y Y vAs shown, the head member I9 is provided with aligned longitudinal' slots I1.. extending from ypoints on opposite sides Lofthe pivot bolt I2 to near""the"opposite ends, of the member and the perpendicular blade His provided with a `single longitudinal slot I8 extending substantially the entire length thereof. These-slotsI'I rand I8 are provided for guiding pivot bolts ormernbers of anv adjustable frame to'fbefused Vin connection with the head'member'IU and blade II inl'aying 01T geometric gures and for locatingthe center lines of such figures or actual objects aswill presently be morefully described. This frame, as shown,
` comprises a pair 'of bars I9 extending longitudinally on opposite sides of the perpendicular blade I'I,vsaid bars I9 being provided at'onefen'd with pivot bolts 29 which workin the', slots I'I of the head member I'IJ'A and are provided with securing j OFFICE nuts 2I'.`\ A pair of equalizing bars; 22 are re? spectivelyattached at one end pivotally'to the side bars I9 byvmeans lof vsaid bolts ZI) whereby to be adjusted with the adjacent ends of the bars' I9 and locked together therewith on the head of the equalizing bars 22 are pivotally attached to each other by a bolt 23 which works in the longitudinal slot I8 of the blade II and is locked in adjusted position by nut 24.
Opposed to the equalizing bars 22 is another pair of similar bars 25 which are pivotally attached, as at 26,'to the outer end portions of said side bars I9 and are pivotally connected at their innerv ends by a bolt 21 similar to the bolt 23 which connects theother pair of equalizing bars 22, said bolt 21 working in the slot I8 of the blade II and being provided with a locking nut 28 similar to the nut 24 on said bolt 23.
By the pivotal connections and mounting of the longitudinal side bars I9 and the equalizing bars or links 22 and 25, said bars I9 may be adjusted at different distances apart and either perpendicularly to the head member I9 andin parallel 'Ihe opposite ends relation to the blade II, as shown in Figure 1,
the blade II as shown in Figures 2 and 5. It is thus obvious that the longitudinal side bars I9 are readily adjusted to coincide with the opposite sides of a geometrical figure or actual object of either rectangular form, as shown in Figure 1, or of tapered polygonal form as shown in Figure 5, and in either case the slot I8 of lthe stem .circular figure or object, as shown in Figure 2,
in which latter case the converged outer ends ofi-v said side bars I9 may be brought together in c0n` tactwith each other, as shown in Figure 2,1or,v
they may be spaced apart, as shown in Figure 5,y
and in either vcase the converging side bars'IE! are brought tangential to the circular orv other.r`
shape outline of the geometrical gure which is laid out in a drawing or in circumferential contact with a circular orv other shape actual article or object. A p v Whilefthe device is particularly adapted for locating and marking center lines on the ob,- jects orwgures, it is noted that .the device may beset to lay out andmark the outlines of rectangular and tapered objects as shown; in Figures l and .5 by utilizing the side bars I9 as theguide in marking the opposite sides of the figure. Obviously, the structure admits ofconsiderable modification without departing from thel spirit and scope ofl the inventionl as dened by the ap-r pended-claims. Thefinvention, therefore, is not limitedto the specific construction shown in the accompanying drawing.
What is claimed is; j
1; The herein described adjustable square and taper measuring device, comprising an elongated straight-edged base member having guide means extending lengthwise thereof on opposite sides'of its middle portion, a blade member extending perpendicularly fronrthe middle portion of said base member',A saidbase member and blade member constitutinga T-square,the blade member having longitudinal guide means extending con`r tinuously from end to end thereof, a pair of Alon,- gitudinal straight-edged side bars located respectively on opposite sides of saidblade member and adjustably connected togetherat their 'opposite ends by opposed pairs of equalizing bars, the
equalizing bars of each pair being pivotally attached at one end to said side bars and pivotally,
