DISPENSING BOX OR CONTAINER FOR ROLL PAPER Filed Nov. 9, 1936 Y INVENTOR. fi/a/"o/d 6110/7 67 ORNEY$ Patented Feb. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING BOX on CONTAINER FOR ROLL PAPER Harold C. Harvey, Sturgis, Mich, assignor to Harvey Paper Mich.
Products Company, Sturgis,
Application November 9, 1936, Serial No. 109,933
, 12Claims.
pensing boxes or containers for roll paper.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a dispensing box or package for roll paper which may be formed of an integral blank and includes an effective cutter or shearing edge without requiring parts.
Second, to provide a paper dispensing box or package in which the roll of paper is effectively held or supported for the withdrawal of the web of paper therefrom, the web of paper being effectively held so that it does not retract or withdraw into the box after a severing operation.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying which the addition of metal drawing, in
. age or box embodying the features of my invention, the end of 'a'web of paper being shown projecting therefrom.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section ona line corresponding to line 2-4! of Fig. 1 with a roll of paper within the box and the end of the web projecting.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the box or package is formed.
Fig. 5 is .a fragmentary perspective view looking from an end of the box with the outer end wall flap open, the purpose of this view being to show structural details. I
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the front wall, the serrations or cutter edge thereof being exaggerated for convenience in illustration.
In the accompanying drawing i represents a roll of paper and '2 the paper web constituting the roll. My improved paper dispensing package are exte nsions from the edge of the guide portion from the ends thereof while the top wall I has end wall flaps Hi extending from the ends thereof. These flaps i3 and i l have interlocking tongues 15 and i6.
The front wall 5 has outer end wall extension I! terminating in tucking flaps it which are, after the box is set up as indicated in Fig. 5, tucked between the rear edges of the'end wall flaps l4 and the adjacent rear wall,
' The blank is suitably scored between the various parts to facilitate folding as indicated by the broken lines I9 and has a line of perforations 20 along the line joining the front wall reinforcing extension fl with the upper edge of the, front wall 5.
Previous'to setting up the box, the front wall reinforcing extension 8 is folded inwardly upon the inner side of the front wall andsecured thereto preferably by a layer of adhesive indicated at 2!. In the embodiment of. my invention illustrated this reinforcing extension is substantially coextensive with the front wall. This provides a double ply front wall substantially stiff even when the box is formed of relatively light stock.
The folded edge provides a stiff cutting or shearing edge and as a result of the perforations 263, this folded edge has serrations or teeth indicated at 23-see Fig. 6. These serrations are however enlarged or exaggerated in this figure for convenience in illustration. However, substantial teeth result from folding this front wall extension inwardly, and a relative stiff front wall and also cutting or shearing edge results.
To tension the paper and prevent its being retracted into the box after a dispensing operation, I' provide a web or paper holder and this comprises the extensions 9 and Wei the blank which are folded into the box with the extension 8 in substantially parallel relation to the front wall of theloox and the extension or portion in in substantially parallelrelation to the bottom of the box, these parts being spaced from the adjacent walls so that the web of paper may be threaded between the same and is properly tensioned thereby.
To further hold and tension the roll of paper, the guide or tension portion IE3 is provided with an angled paper holder extension H and i2, the portion i l engaging the front of the roll and the portion 52 the top of the roll. The roll of paper is arranged within the box so that as the web is drawn therefrom, it passes downwardly between the roll of paper and the holder portion H.
The top and the guide portion are provided with a finger opening 24 while the angled paper holder is provided with an aligned finger opening 25. The roll of paper may be engaged through these openings to tension the same if desired when the paper is drawn out and also the opening 24 extending into the guide portion 9 provides a finger opening facilitating the engaging of the end of the web after it has been severed on the cutter or severing edge 23.
By this simple means, I provide an effective severing or cutting edge and the front wall terminating in such cutting edge is stiffened so that it is not. likely to bend or be distorted during the severing operation. The strip or web of paper is effectively tensioned and held so that it is not likely to be withdrawn or retracted into the box owing to the tendency of the paper to recoil after it has been drawn off or as a result of the shifting about of the roll within the box particularly when it has been substantially reduced in diameter. Further, the box is quite rigid even when of substantial length and formed of relatively light material.
The rolls of paper illustrated are slightly dirninished in diameter, it being intended that in practice the rolls when placed within the container shall contact not only the holder members H and i2 but also the rear wall, thus preventing movement of the roll of paper within the package during shipping and handling.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in very practical embodiments thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
