In combination,ya hollow cylindrical work support having a slotted needleway in the wall thereof, means to releasably secure the work'to the exterior of saidsupport in overlying relation v r a vertically reciprocable sewing needle opposed, to said work support for movement in and out of .said needleway, stitch forming means within. v the hollow interior of said work support for 'co-f operation with said sewing needle, 'and;mean s' 1 to-autoniatically impart rotative andaxialmovem and the work step by step in successively chang ing directions relative to the reciprocating'sewing I f needle. 3. In a sewing. machine, a hollow mandrel mounted subject to both rotative and axial shifting movements, said mandrel having a needleway opening through its wall and'including a transverse portion and longitudinal portions extending respectively from the ends thereof, means to releasably secure work to said mandrel in overlying relation ,to said need1ewa'y,. sewing mechanism including a vertically reciprocable sewing needle opposed to said mandrel needleway' and stitch formingpmeans within s aid mandrel for cooperation with said sewing needle, relatively timed mandrel actuating means for producing both longitudinal and rotative movements of said mandrel to shift the work together with the longitudinal and transverse portions of the needleway across the path of needle reciprocation to form runs of stitching through the work, a driven -transmission mechanism for operating both said sewing mechanism and said mandrel actuating means.
5. In a label sewing machine, a hollow mandrel mounted subject to both rotative and axial shifting movements, said mandrel having a needle {way opening through its wall. and including a transverse portion and longitudinal portions ex. tending from the ends thereof, a label frame to overlie work supported on said 'mandrel and adapted to receive and hold a label in register,
with said mandrel needleway, means for clamping the work and superposed label to said mandrel, a sewing'mechanism including a vertically reciprocable sewing needle opposed to said mandrel needleway and stitch forming means within said mandrel for cooperation-with said sewing needle, and relatively timed'mandrel actuating means for producing both longitudinal and rotative movements of said mandrel to shift the work and superposed label together withthe longitudinal and transverse portions of the needleway across the path of needle reciprocation;to form' stitching for attaching the labelto the work.
6. In a sewing machine as defined-in claim 3 wherein the mandrel actuatingmeans comprises, a rotative shift cam wheel and an axial shift cam wheel, a rack operated by said rotative shift cam wheel, transmission gearing between said rack and mandrel,a pivoted lever operated by said axial shiftcam wheel, means to engage-said lever in operative relation to said mandrel, said cam wheels having their effective cam sections relatively disposed to'time the rotative and axial shift movementsimparted to said mandrel in desired successive order, and means for driving said cam wheels.
7. In a label sewing machine, a hollow manshifting movements, said mandrel. having a needleway opening through its wall and including transverse and longitudinal portions, a label frame; .to overlie work supported on said mandrel and adapted to receive and hold a label. in register with said mandrel needleway,'means for clamping the work and superposed label to said mandrel, a sewing mechanism including a vertically reciprocable sewing needle opposed to said mandrel needleway and stitch forming means within saidmandrelior cooperation with said sewing needle, mandrel actuating means including a 1 1 rotative shift camwheel and an axial shift cam mechanism foroperating both said sewing mechanism and said cam wheels.
8. In a label machine, a hollow work support provided with a needleway, a pivotally mounted label frame carried by said work support to. overlie work supportedthereon and adapted to receive and hold a label in register with said needleway and with a predetermined line of stitching, spring biased means also carried by'.
