AfroRNEYs Patented Jam 30, 1940 L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MEANS FOR MAINTAINING MANIFOLD FORMS IN REGISTRATION James B. Fulk, Norwalk, Ohio Application December 22, 1937, Serial No. 181,064
4 Claims. (Cl. 197-133) This invention relates to the apparatus for in long continuous strips preferably passing over maintaining a plurality of forms in registration the guide roll l4, thence between the tensioning during their passage through a typewriting mabars I3, along the table l2, and thence under the chine. The forms, as filled in on the machine, writing machine, emerging finally from beneath 5 are intended to be separated for filing in differa cut-off bar indicated at l6.
ent places, but for economy of manufacture, an The forms as filled out on the typewriting effort has been made to supply them inlong conmachine are intended to be individual sheets tinuous strips which are fed progressively into which may be separately filed for reference purthe typewriting machine and are then severed poses. They are supplied however according to at the completion of the writing operation. my invention in long continuous strips which are 10 Where the strips are used in connection with secured together. preferably by adhesive along a a flat bed writing machine, strips of transfer narrow strip 20 adjacent one'of the longitudinal material may be interleaved between the form edges. A weakening line 21 extends along each strips, and for this purpose, suitable rolls are strip and all of the weakening lines 2! are in disposed on opposite sides of the machine, one registration so that all may be simultaneously 16 of which comprises a supply roll and the other, severed,,thus enabling the connected portions of a take-up roll. In this way, the forms, after the the forms to be removed whenever desired. completion of the writing operation, may be sev- One form of removal is illustrated in Fig. 1 as ered and immediately allocated to their respecoccurring prior to the entrance of the forms 0 tive destinations. Inasmuch as the forms are beneath the writing machine, the removal being 20 disconnected at their edges, the practice of mainaccomp s ed y means of a Cutter 5, W ch is taining the strips in registration has b n to fastened to the table l2. In this embodiment, ti paced openings in t Strips t the strip 20 is progressively severed as the forms retractable device which includes pins that enter a e pulled through the machine y the p the openings and thus align the forms immedi Suitable guide plates 26 and 21 are mounted on 25 ately prior to their entrance int th achine, the table and are adjustable laterally with respect This device, however, has necessitated careful e as at 28 d 29 respectively, o gui e th manipulation of the forms by the operator and forms in their proper direction through the maaccordingly has slowed up the operation of the in The adjustable feature of t e de 30 machine and in addition has complicated th plates facilitates the use of forms of different to manipulation of the strips through the machine. W dth in the machine.
An object of my invention is to provide an The de p ate 6 presents a uniformly fiat apparatus by means of which long c nti u us surface to the forms, but the guide plate 2! has forms may be accurately maintained in registrathe eliter Comer inclined downwardly 50 as tion during their passage through the machine, to facilitate automatic removal of the strip 20 35 and by means of which the forms may be handled y the eutter- In this Way, the Severed Strip y i shipment it t endangering th registration be collected as waste material in advance of the of them. i movement of the forms into the machine.
, Referring now to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a, t The forms with which I have illustrated my 0 plan view of a, machine through hi h forms invention do not-have the carbon strips inter- 40 made in accordance with my invention are being DOSed between them, for the reason at t e mafed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of part of the chine of F 1 has Provision for te p mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a secti t k on th transfer material between the manifold forms. plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. Th s y be a s d y a s of a supp y 4 is an end view of a modified arrangement of l 35 Which is positioned on O e S d Of t 45 forms, machine and a take-up roll 36 which is mounted The apparatus which I have devised for mainon the opposite side Of the machine. Strips Of taining the forms in registration is adapted for transfer material 31 y b hu t readed beuse on various types of writing machines altween the manifold forms in t usual y- If though I haveillustrated it in connection with ades however, er Str ps may be inter 5o flat bed machine which is indicated in general posed between the manifold forms in which case at 10. This machine has an extension II at the they are attached to the form strips along the rear thereof which carries a table l2, tensioning removal portion 20. rods l3 and a guide roll [4. The forms which are In Fig. 4, for example, I have shown a pack of indicated in general at l5 arefed to the machine forms having interposed transfer stripsin which that they may be kept in registration while they are passing through the machine. The desired result may thus be readily accomplished without necessitating equipment that must register with perforations in the sheets and that must a have provision for manipulation to permit ad- 7 vancement of the sheets quickly through the machine.
My invention therefore may be readily adapted for use on all kinds of writing machines without requiring expensive attachments which must be modified in accordance with the structural characteristics of each writing machine. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1. Means forsevering the edges from manifold forms while maintaining the forms in registration during their passage through a typewriting machine, comprising in combination, a support for guiding long continuous strips of forms that are connected together along a narrow portion adjacent the longitudinal edges of the strips and that have a weakening line extending lengthwise thereof and spaced from the connected portion, a guide carried by the support for bending the forms along the weakening line and means mounted on the support for severing the bent portions in advance of the passage of the forms into the machine.
2. In combination, a table upon which long continuous strips of manifold forms may be supported for movement into a writing machine, a guiding member mounted on the table, and comprising a plate having one corner thereof bent downwardly, to deflect a portion of the form and a cutter mounted on the table in alignment with the bent portion of the plate for severing the deflected portion from the forms as they emerge from beneath said guiding member.
3. In combination, a support upon which long continuous strips of manifold forms may be moved during their passageinto a writing machine, U-shaped guides carried by the support for guiding the strips, one of the guides having a portion thereof extending downwardly to deflect a part of the strips, and a cutter carried by the support and disposed arfiacent the last named guide for severing the deflected part from the form and for deflecting the severed portion away from the writing machine.
4. In combination, a support along which manifold forms may be moved during their passage into a writing machine, U-shaped guides mounted on the support and adjustable laterally thereof for guiding the forms, one of said guides having a portion thereof extending downwardly and inwardly for bending one edge of the forms downwardly as they are'moved along the support,
and a cutter engaging the forms for automatically severing the bent portion from the forms as they are moved into the machine.
