DRUM BUSHING STRUCTURE FOR CONTAINERS AND THE LIKE Original Filed April 21, l933 Z758?! [024.535. wad/wax.
Patented Dec. 12, 1939 UNITED STATES DRUM BUSHING STRUCTURE FOR TAINERS AND THE LIKE CON- Louis B. Wackman, St. Louis, Mo., asslgnor to American Flange &
Manufacturing 00., Inc.,
Chicago, 111., a corporation ollllinois Application April 21, 1933, Serial No. 667,179 Renewed March 30, 1938 3 Claims.
Thlsinvention relates to sheet metal drums, barrels or containers, and pertains more particularly to the bushing structures thereof, the invention having for its primary object to provide a bushing structure for attachment to the bun opening .of a metal container in such manner that the bushing will be held securely in position against rotation during securing or removing of a threaded closure plug.
Another object of the invention is in providing both the. container wall and the bushing with improved cooperable fitting formations for adaptably securing the bushing against turning in the wall.
A further object of the inve .ition is in providing an improved method for making bushings from a material sheet.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, exemplifying the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through this improved drum bushing structure showing the manner of securing it to the barrel head and the bushing having a cooperable closure plug and a sealing cap mounted over the plug and being secured to the bushing.
Figure 2 is an inverted view of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top view of the bushing and a portion of the barrel head.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the bushing showing its formation before being secured to the barrel head.
Figure 5'is an inverted view of Fig. 4, showing in dotted lines the manner in which the marginal edge of the bushing flange is formed.
The accompanying drawing discloses a fragmentary portion l of a barrel head in which an opening having an inwardly turned annular neck 2 is formed, and concentrically formed around the opening and neck, is a shoulder 8 having a polygonally formed perimeter 4, said shoulder 3 being extended from a sub-shoulder 5 which is extended from the wall or barrel head I.
The above described structure is for the supporting cooperation of a bushing 6, said bushing comprising a neck I which is threaded interiorly as designated at 8, and having a flange 9 at one end, said flange having an under-formed socket ill having a polygonal shaped outer perimeter ll, said socket being of the approximate size and contour of the shoulder 3 on the barrel head i so that the socket will over-engage the shoulder 3 when the neck I of the bushing 6 is mounted in the neck 2 of the barrel head.
The interior threading 8 of the bushing 6 extends to the flange end of the bushing and does not extend to the depending end of the neck I, 5
the wall of the neck beneath the threads 8 being relatively thin so that when the neck 1 of the bushing 6 is mounted within the neck 2 of the barrel head I, the relatively thin wall I20. of the neck I can be outwardly swedged over the de- 10 pending end 12 of the neck 2, thus securely seating the flange 9 of the bushing in a socket-like fit over the polygonal shaped shoulder 3, and sealing the bushing in position by outwardly curling the depending end of the neck I of the bush- 15 ing over the depending end of the neck 2 of the barrel, as designated at l3.
As the perimeter i of the shoulder 3 of the barrel head I and the perimeter ll of the socket l0 in-the flange 9 of the bushing 6, are of like contour by reason of them being polygonally shaped, a locked relation against turning is provided between the barrel head and the bushing which will prevent loosening of the bushing in the barrel head during manipulating of the closure plug M in mounting or removing the closure plug to or from the bushing 6.
The closure plug it may be of any desired formation on its top or wrench engaging end, the
plug shown being provided with a wrench engaging polygonal socket I 5 and in mounting the plug in the bushing, the plug is provided on. the under side of its flange i6 with a sealing gasket W, said gasket being interposed in sealing position between the plug flange l6 and the bushing flange 9, when the plug is tightly engaged in the bushing.
The perimeter B8 of the flange 9 of the bushing 6 is rounded during its manufacture and when the bushing is in-the barrel head, the rounded 4o perimeter i8 provides the formation of a valley or groove between the perimeter of the bushing and the sub-shoulder 5 of the barrel head, this groove providing for the securing and clinching of the depending end IQ of a sealing cap 20 which is 5 secured to the bushing flange 9 in sealing relation over the bushing and the plug. The rounded perimeter iii of the bushing flange 9 thus provides a securing bead for the sealing cap 20.
The bushing t is made from a single piece of sheet metal in the form of a disc made into a shape having radial portions 2| on its perimeter which are separated by notches 22, each radi portion having a straight edge 23. I
The radial portions 2| after being formed and separated from each other'by the notches II, are rearwardiy and inwardly folded on a circular line which forms the perimeter l8, and the straight edges 23 of respective radial portions 21 will provide the polygonal shaped perimeter ll of the socket II in the flange I,
The central portion of the disc is drawn to provide the neck I of the bushing, and machining of the bushing willprovide the interior threadingv ing structure assembly.
A bushing structure of this character may be used either with or without'a sealing cap, and in addition, any form oi operable closure plug may be used, and in anticipation of the structure being without sealing cap, provision is made by the eyelet ring 24 being secured between the flange 8 of the bushing 8 and the annular subshoulder 5 of the head i for sealing the plug by securing a sealing wire through one of the eyelets of the ring 24, and through an aperture 26 formed in the plug.
The annular sub-shoulder 5 forms a reinforced seating base for the bushing flange 9 and for the ring 24, and which ring may be of soft metal for providing a packing gasket between the bushing flange 9 and the sub-shoulder 5, said sub-shoulder forming a reinforcement for the bushing 5 and flange 9 thereof wherein said bushing will be prevented from being disturbed by any distortion of the barrel head I, which may be caused by a capping tool operating to clinch the cap 26 40 in securance over the bushing flange.
Obviously constructional modifications of the device are possible without departing from the spirit of the present invention and therefore it is to be understood that it is not necessary to limit the invention by the terms used in the foregoing description, excepting such as the state of the art may require.
What I claim is:
l. A container having an opening in one of its walls and a shoulder formed around the opening, a bushing secured in said opening and having a flange seated on said shoulder, said bushing flange on its perimeter being rounded to provide a recess between the flange and the shoulder for receiving the depending edge of a sealing cap.
2. A metal container having a threaded bushing fitted within a hole punched in the container wall, said bushing having a flange with an under formed annular recess in fitting engagement with a polygonal shaped shoulder formed in said wall and surrounding the hole, and an outer shoulder formed in said wall and surrounding the polygonal shaped shoulder and upon which an outer portion of the bushing flange is seated, said bushing flange having a rounded part on its perimeter to provide a recess between the flange and the outer shoulder for receiving the depending edge of a sealing cap.
3. A container having an opening in one of its walls and a shoulder formed around the opening, a bushing secured in said opening, a flange extending from said'bushing and seated on said shoulder, the perimeter of said flange extending inwardly and downwardly from its farthest extent to provide an annular recess between the flange and the surrounding container wall for receiving the depending edge of a sealing cap.
