3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a table and more particularly to a table of the knock down and foldable type.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a table. of the class described which comprises a relatively few number of parts enabling the. table to be easily and compactly assembled for. use and quickly disassembled and folded into a unitary structure permitting of the easy transportation of the same.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide. a table of the class described which by virtue of its novel construction is relatively rugged and compact in assembled position as well as in the disassembled folded transportable unitary form.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a table of this character which is not only simple'to assemble and disassemble, but cheap to manufacture.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the 1938,, Serial No. 198,574
purpose of illustration there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference numerals l4 and It generally designate a pair. of legs, which as clearly illustrated in the drawings have transversely extending upper and lower end portions 18 and 20. The lower end portion 20 is provided with a centrally disposed transversely extending substantially U-shaped recess 22 therein. These legs as shown are, foldably connected together by means of the cen' lo trally hinged arms, and 26. It will be observed, that the free ends of the arms 24 and 26 are pivotally connected for upward swinging movement to the inner sides of each of the legs M. and !6 by means of the hinges 28. The lower end portion 20 of the legs project inwardly beyond the central portion of the leg defining a ledge on which in the lower extended position of the pivoted arms. 24 and 26 the arms rest securing or holding the same in their horizontal position. The arms 24 and 26 are centrally pivotally connected by means of the hinge Bil for upward folding swinging position. Adjacent the inner hinge connected and of each of the arms 24 and 26 there is pivotally connected the 25 telescopic braces 36 and 38. The free ends of the braces 36 and 38 are pivotally connected at substantially the central point of the intermediate portion or portions of the legs. Referring to Figure 12', it will be observed, that the braces 36 and 38 are telescopically'arranged, by providing a longitudinally extending slot 4G in the upper portion of the lower section 'of the brace in which, a pin 42 in the lower free end of the upper section is freely slidable. The sections are maintained in extended position by means of the slide 46 which is freely slidable over the sections as shown.
It will thus be observed, that the hingedly connected arms 24 and 26, and the cooperating braces 36 and 38 as clearly shown in Figure 1 and Figure 12, enablegthe legs of the table to be maintained in an extended position for assembled use of the table or folded position in the knock down formof the table for transportation thereof.
The topportion of the table comprises a central section or leaf 46 and side leaves 48 and 50. It will be observed that the central leaf or section 46. is provided inwardly adjacent its free end thereof on the inner side with a transversely extending abutment 52 against which the upper outer portion of the legs abut in the assembled position of the table. Each of the legs is provided on. the inner sides adjacent the top thereof the table.
of with a projecting U-shaped staple 56 which projects through a slot in one section 58 of the hinge 60 secured to the lower side of the table in spaced relation to the abutment 52. It will be observed that the upper portion l8 of each of the legs is disposed in the assembled position of the table between the abutment 52 and the hinge 60 to the end, that when the pin 64 is inserted in the staple the legs are secured to the central leaf The leaves 48 and 56 are each provided with dowel pins 58 which in the usual manner are received in corresponding apertures in the sides of the central leaf 46 and are furthermore maintained in an assembled extended position at each side of the central leaf 46 by means of the supports l0 which are pivotally connected to the central portion of the leaf 46 adjacent the sides thereof and swingable in the outermost extended position. In this position theinwardly directed recesses 12 receive the projecting pin 14 on the lower side of the outer leaf. The outer leaves are additionally supported in their assembled position by means of the slidable supports 16. These supports are disposed in spaced relation to the abutment 52 at a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upper portion of the legs Hi to the end that they snugly slide adjacent the inner side of the upper portion l8 of the legs when in the assembled position. As clearly observed these supports 16 are substantially L- shaped and are provided with a longitudinally extending slot 18 which receives a pin projecting from the inner side of the central leaf 46.
Each of the outer leaves 48 and 50 are provided with spaced transversely extending blocks 84 and 86 disposed inwardly of one end thereof and correspndingly disposed blocks 88 and 90 inwardly of the other end. The blocks 88 and 953 have their innermost edges tapered and of such a length when the leaves 48 and 50 have their innermost longitudinal edges tight adjacent one another that they may be snugly received in the U-shaped recesses 22 of the legs. The central leaf 46 is also provided with a transversely extending block 92 for similar reception as a support in the recess 22 of the other leg.
From the foregoing description, the manner in which the table is maintained in its assembled position will be clearly apparent. When the table is in this position and it is desired to disassemble the same for transportation the slides 46 are slid out of engagement with the sections of the telescopic braces 36 and 38, and the braces .and arms 24 and 26 move upwardly'in folded position as illustrated in Figure 12, to the end that the legs l4 and I6 assume the position illustrated in Figures 5 to 9, inclusive. The outer leaves 48 and 50 are placed in juxtaposed position as illustrated in Figure 11 and the central leaf 46 and the outer leaves placed on the outer side of the legs 14 and I6 respectively, the blocks 88 and 90 of the outer leaves and the block 92 of the central leaf being received in the U-shaped recesses of the bottom portions of the legs while the upper ends of the legs abut the blocks 84 and 86 of the outer leaves and the abutment 52 of the central leaf.
Adjacent one end of the central leaf there is pivotally mounted a T-shaped bolt I00 which is received by the hook members I62 disposed adjacent each end and inner side of the end leaves 48 and 50. A corresponding T-shaped member is secured to the central leaf 46 adjacent the other end thereof and is received in the hook member secured to the outer leaves 48 and 50 in the same manner.
It will thus be seen that these cooperating T- shaped bolts and hook members firmly secure the central leaf and the juxtaposed outer leaves in compact position maintaining the folded legs centrally compactly between the same for easy transportation thereof. Of course, after the same has been transported it is only necessary when it is desired to assemble the table to remove the T-bolts from the hook members and assemble the table as previously described.
While there is shown for the purpose of illustration a. preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood, that it is capable of various changes and modifications thereof, without departing from the scope thereof and it is intended, therefore, that only such limitations shall be imposed thereon as are indicated in the prior art or in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A table of the class described comprising, a pair of legs, foldable means for bracing said legs when in unfolded position, a central leaf, means for securing said central leaf on the upper end of said legs, side leaves, means for securing said side leaves adjacent the side of said central leaf to form a top, said bracing means upon being folded supporting said legs in juxtaposed position, said side leaves being adapted to be disposed adjacent one another and placed against the outer side of one of the legs, the central leaf being disposed adjacent the outer side of the other leg, and means secured to the inner sides of the outer leaves and the inner side of the central leaf securing said aforementioned parts together.
2. A table of the class described comprising, a pair of legs, each of said legs in one end thereof being provided with a substantially U-shaped recess, foldable means bracing said legs, a central leaf, means for securing said central leaf on the upper end of said legs, side leaves, means for securing said side leaves adjacent the side of said central leaf to form a top in the table forming position of said aforementioned parts, said bracing means upon being folded supporting said legs in juxtaposed position, said side leaves being adapted to be disposed adjacent one another and placed against the outer side of one of the legs, said side leaves on the inner sides thereof being provided with spaced abutments, one of said abutments abutting one of the ends of the legs, the other abutment being received in the U- shaped recess, the central leaf being disposed adjacent the outer side of the other leg, spaced abutments on the inner side of the central leaf, one of said abutments abutting one end of the leg and the other abutment being received in the U-shaped recess of the leg, and means secured to the inner sides of the outer leaves and the inner side of the central leaf securing said aforementioned parts together.
3. A table of the class described comprising, a pair of legs, each of said legs in one end thereof being provided with a substantially U-shaped recess, foldable means bracing said legs, a central leaf, means for securing said central leaf on the upper end of said legs, side leaves, means for securing said side leaves adjacent the side of said central leaf to form a top in the table forming position of said aforementioned parts, said bracing means upon being folded supporting said legs in juxtaposed position, said side leaves being adapted to be disposed adjacent one another and placed against the outer side of one of the legs, said side leaves on the inner sides thereof being provided with spaced abutments, one of said abutments abutting one of the ends of the'legs, the other abutment being received in the U- shaped recess, the central leaf being disposed adjacent the outer side of the other leg, spaced abutments on the inner side of the central leaf, one of said abutments abutting one end of the 10 leg and the other abutment being received in the U-shaped recess of the leg, pairs of adjacently disposed spaced hooks secured to the inner sides of the outer leaves, and spaced pivotally mounted cooperating T-shaped bolts on the inner sides of the central leaf for reception in said hooks for securing the pair ofv outer leaves and the in folded position therebetween.
