NiPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
WILLIAM W. BARNES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO O. M. ORANDALL & (30., OF MONTROSE, PA.
IM PROVEMENT ,lN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,975, dated July 29, 1879; application filed May 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BARNES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to. the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in toys; and the invention consists in a toy provided with a box mounted on wheels, the axles of the wheels having cams, which, by the traction of the wheels, operate levers and impart motion to a jointed figure or figures removably attached to supports, the box serving as a casing for the operating mechanism, and the figures and their supports being adapted to be inolosed within the box for transportation, substantially as is hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a side View of my toy, partly in section, with mule and rider; Fig. 2, a cross-section of same in line a: a, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side view (a modification) of my toy, partly in section, with dancing figures; and Fig. 4, a cross-section of same through line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents the axles of the supportingwheels at, and to these axles are fixed a cam or cams, B, so that as the wheels revolve the axles will turn and revolve the cams. Immediately above the cams B and in contact with them is a lever, G. Through the upper surface of the box D, which incloses the wheels, passes the support 0 of the figure or figures to be operated by the cams B. This support is secured to the lever G, and the figures which are supported by it may represent a mule, E,
volve they come in contact with the lever O, forcing it upward; and when the cams have passed out of contact with the lever, the lever, with the support and figure thereon, falls by gravity from its raised position to be again raised as the cam strikes the lever, and so on, imparting a sudden rising-and-fallin g motion to the figure fixed to the support, which motion when imparted to the fore legs of the mule, as shown in Fig. 1, will simulate rearing.
Instead of the lever 0, blocks b, with wire supports, may be employed, to be operated by the cams fixed to the wheeLa-xles, which will cause the figures F, loosely mounted on the wire supports 0, to simulate dancing, turning on their supports, and bringing their feet alternately in contact with the upper surface of the coveringbox D. This modification is shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
It is obvious that other figures besides mules and dancing figures may be fixed to the supports and be operated by the cams, and the mule E may have placed on it other kinds of riders than that shown-such as a monkey, &c.
The figures are each made in removable sections, so that each figure may be readily taken apart and packed away within the box D, thereby greatly facilitating their transportation.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A toy constructed with wheels on, cams B, lever 0, support a, and jointed figure E, removably attached to the support a, and operated by the traction of the wheels a, combined with a box, D, constructed and arranged as a casing for the operating mechanism, and to receive the figure E when removed from the support, substantially as and for the purpose described.
