7 Claims.
This invention relates to holders for nail mak ing dies, and is particularly directed to die holders for regulator polygonal dies of the type disclosed in my Patent No. 2,115,544, issued April 26, 1938.
An object of this invention is to provide die holders of the character described having means for firmly and rigidly clamping the dies in operative position.
A further object ,of this invention is to provide strong and rugged die holders of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and disassemble, and withal practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exempli- 20 fied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of die holders embodying the invention, carrying regular pentagonal dies;
Figure 2 is a top plan view similar to Figure 1, but illustrating die holders embodying the invention for carrying regular octagonal dies;
Figure 3 is a top plan View of one of the die holders shown in Figure 1,'with the bolts removed;
Figure 4 is an end view of the die holder shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a top plan View of one of the die holders shown in Figure 1, with one of the clamping bolts in clamping position, and the other bolt shown in position before insertion into the die holder;
Figure 6 is a top plan view of one of the die holders in Figure 2, with the bolts removed;
Figure 7 is an end view of the other die holder shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 8 is a top plan view of the other die holder shown in Figure 2, with one clamping bolt in clamping position, and the other bolt shown in position before insertion into the die holder.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, ill and II designate a pair of complementary die holders embodying the invention. The die holder I9 is made of a block of steel and has downwardly and inwardly inclined front faces l2 and 13, top and 1938, Serial No. 226,667
bottom parallel horizontal faces i 4 and I5, and end faces [6 and Mia.
At the end face l6a, the die holder H3 has a cut away portion ll of uniform horizontal crosssection forming parallel, inwardly facing similar '5 surfaces l9, similar aligned shoulders 20, at right angles to surfaces l9, and symmetrical inclined faces 2!, 25a. The die holder i6 is formed with a pair of similar parallel horizontal, longitudinal, symmetrically disposed through openings 22, com- 10 municating with the cut out ll. Each opening 22 forms a semi-circular opening in a shoulder 28 and a semi-cylindrical groove in a face l9. Disposed within the bolt openings 22 is a pair of similar symmetrical die clamping bolts 23 havl5, ing screw threaded end portions 2& extending beyond the rear end [6 of the die holder ill, to receive nuts 26.
At the other end of each bolt 23 is a head '28 having a semi-cylindrical surface 29 contacting 20 one of the surfaces l9, and a surface 30 disposed adjacent the shoulder 29. The top and bottom surfaces of the head 28 are flush with the top and bottom surfaces I5, i l of the die holder ill. The inner surface 32 of the head 23 is inclined to the longitudinal axis of the die holder. The outer surfaces 33 of the heads 28 are aligned with the end surface Ilia of the die holder.
Supported by the die holder It is a regular pentagonal die 35, such as shown in my Patent 30 No. 2,115,544, issued April 26, 1938. Two sides of the die 35 contact the inclined surfaces 2!, Zia. of the die holder. Two sides of the die 35 contact the inclined surfaces 32 of the heads 28. Thus, one face of the die 35 is parallel to end 35 face B60. and is exposed for use in making nails.
As shown in the drawings, the outer faces of the die 35 are formed with central vertical longitudinal semi-cylindrical grooves 36.
The die holder ii is substantially similar to 40 the die holder Ill and symmetrically disposed thereto, but may be shorter, and carries a complementary die 35.
The die holder it at the end surface it thereof may be formed with an opening 39 to receive a headed pin ll) formed with a semi-spherical socket- 42, and which may be struck when mounting the die holder in a die block, not shown.
. In Figures 2, 6, '7 and 8 there is shown a pair of similar, symmetrical die holders lta and Ma, similar to the die holders l8 and M, except that the recesses or cut-outs Ila in the dies, and the heads 28a of the bolts are designed for holding regular octagonal dies 35a instead of regular pentagonal dies, as shown in Figure 1.
The die holders Illa and I la thus have cut outs Ila to contact five sides of the die 35a, and the bolts 23a have heads 28a to contact two other sides of the die. Thus, each die holder carries a die with one exposed face.
It will be understood that a pair of die holders supports a pair of multi-faced, complementary, similar symmetrically mounted dies which may be adjusted to bring different pairs of grooves 36 into working position, as the grooves wear out. When a pair of grooves wears out, the nuts 26 are unscrewed, the bolts are taken out, the dies are rotated to bring differential sets of grooves into operative position, the bolts are then reinserted in the die holders the nuts are again screwed to the bolts and tightened to hold the dies in the die holders in their new positions.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A die holder having a cut out at one end formed with a pair of parallel vertical inner faces, and a pair of vertical faces inclined to one another, said die holder being formed with a pair of parallel through openings communicating with opposite ends of said out out, said bolts having heads at one end within said cut outs contacting the parallel faces of said out out, said heads being formed with vertical inclined faces cooperating with the first mentioned vertical inclined faces to support a polygonal die.
2. A die holder comprising a member having a cut out at one end, of uniform horizontal crosssection, extending from the top to the bottom surface of said holder and forming a pair of parallel, vertical, similar inner faces, a pair of aligned, symmetrically disposed shoulders, and a pair of symmetrically disposed faces inclined to one another, said member being formed with a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed, horizontal through openings communicating with the end of said out out, bolts in said through openings having heads within said out out, said heads having inclined faces whereby a polygonal die may be received in said out out between said member and the heads of said bolts.
3. A die holder comprising a member having a cut out at one end, of uniform horizontal crosssection, extending from the top to the bottom surface of said holder and forming a pair of parallel, vertical, similar inner faces, a pair of aligned, symmetrically disposed shoulders, and a pair of symmetrically disposed faces inclined to one another, said member being formed with a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed, horizontal through openings communicating with the end of said out out, bolts in said through openings having heads within said cut out, said heads having inclined faces whereby a polygonal die may be received in said cut out between said member and the heads of said bolts, said die holder being formed, at the opposite end thereof, with an opening, and a headed pin having a shank received in said opening, the head of said pin being formed with a semi-spherical socket.
4. A pair of die holders having cut outs at adjacent ends, and pairs of parallel through openings communicating with said cut outs, pairs of bolts in said pairs of through openings, having spaced heads within said cut outs, and similar dies of regular polygonal cross-section within said cut outs and held therein by the heads of said bolts, and having exposed faces between said heads, the faces of said dies having central grooves of semicylindrical cross-section.
5. A die holder comprising a member having parallel vertical end surfaces, and parallel horizontalto-p and bottom surfaces, said member having a cut out at one end surface, of uniform horizontal cross section, extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, said out out having a pair of parallel, vertical inner surfaces, extending from the adjacent end surface, at right angles thereto, and with similar, aligned vertical surfaces extending from said inner surfaces, at right angles thereto, and with vertical, inclined surfaces, between said aligned surfaces, said member being further formed with a pair of horizontal, longitudinal, similar, symmetrically disposed through openings communicating with the end of said out out and forming semi-circular openings in said aligned surfaces, and horizontal semi-cylindrical grooves in said inner surfaces, a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed die clamping boits in said through openings having heads at one end within said out out, said heads having top and bottom surfaces flush with the top and bottom surfaces of said member, and with outer faces flush with said adjacent end surface of said member, with surfaces parallel to said outer faces and disposed adjacent said aligned surfaces, and with inner inclined surfaces.
6. A die holder comprising a member having parallel vertical end surfaces, and parallel horizontal top and bottom surfaces, said member having a cut out at one end surface, of uniform. horizontal cross section, extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, said cut out having a pair of parallel, vertical inner surfaces, extending from the adjacent end surface, at right angles thereto, and with similar, aligned vertical surfaces extending from said inner surfaces, at right angles thereto, and with vertical, inclined surfaces between said aligned surfaces, said member being further formed with a pair of horizontal, longitudinal, similar, symmetrically disposed through openings communicating with the end of said out out and forming semi-circular openings in said aligned surfaces, and horizontal semi-cylindrical grooves in said inner surfaces, a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed die clamping bolts in said through openings having heads at one end within said out out, said heads having top and bottom surfaces flush with the top and bottom surfaces of said member, and with outer faces flush with said adjacent end surface of said member, with surfaces parallel to said outer faces and disposed adjacent said aligned surfaces and with inner inclined surfaces, and a die of regular polygonal horizontal cross section within said cut out and between the inclined surfaces of said member and'the inclined surfaces of the heads of said bolts, and having an exposed face disposed between said heads and parallel to said adjacent end surface of said die holder.

A die holder comprising a member having parallel vertical end surfaces, and parallel horizontal top and bottom surfaces, said member having a cut out at one end surface, of uniform horizontal cross section, extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, said out out having a pair of parallel, vertical inner surfaces, extending from the adjacent end surface, at right angles thereto, and with similar, aligned vertical surfaces extending from said inner surfaces, at
right angles thereto, and with vertical, inclined.
