UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE.
ISAAC SWOPE, OF SI. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IM PROVEM ENT IN BlOTTLE-WRAPPERS` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,559, dated July 15, 1879; application filed October 12, 1878.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC SWOPE, ot' the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corrugated Elastic Felt Packing for Glass or other lVares; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, an d to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification..
My invention relates to wrappers used for packing bottles and similar articles 5 and consists in formingt-he wrapper of felt having corrugated belts formed thereon some distance apart, leaving the remainder of the wrapper plain and uncorrugated; and, further, the wrapper of the bottle is made so as to surround the body of the bottle, but not the neck, so that in packing bottles in a suitable case two tiers ot' bottles may be placed one above the other, the bottles in the upper tier being inverted, so that their necks proj ectdown between the bottles in the lower tier, and the wrappers in the uppertier rest on the tops of the wrappers in the lower tier.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a bottle with my improved wrapper. Figs. 2 and 3 show, in side view and section, the corrugated felt of which the wrapper is formed. Fig. 4 represents, in vertical section, a packing-case with two tiers of bottlewrappers in position when packed, the bottles being indicated by dotted lilies.
A designates the bottle, and B the packingwrapper, the latter being formed of a piece ot felt with its edges D fastened together so as to tit the body of the bottle which it covers, as shown. C indicates the raised belts on the wrapper, formed by corrugatin g the felt, these belts being located a suitable distance apart, leaving the remainder of the wrapper plain and uncorrugated. These raised belts on different wrappers, when the bottles are packed, come opposite and against each other, and
serve to hold the bottles a little way apart, while the remainder of the wrapper is left plain, and, fitting the bottle closely, is more convenient for handling during packing or unpacking the bottles, and holds more firmly to the bottle.
The wrapper B is long enough to cover the body of the bottle, but not the neck, so that when the bottles are packed in two tiers in a packing-case, one tier above the other, with the necks of the upper bottles extending down between the bottles in the lower tier, the wrappers in the upper tier rest on the tops ot' the wrappers in the lower tier, as shown in Fig. 4, and thus the bottles are held securely in position in the case.
I am aware that corrugated paper wrappers for bottles, the corrugations extending the length ofthe wrapper, have been niade and are shown in some patents, and I do not claim,
broadly, a corrugated wrapper; but such wrappers as those last mentioned do not well answer the purpose intended without some additional appliance. The whole wrapper being corrugated, it becomes very loose on the bottle, and does not well retain its shape, while my improved wrapper sits closely on the bottle, making the whole more convenient for handling, and serving to keep the corrugated belts in shape.
Bottle-packing devices having raised belts are also shown in English Patent No. 2,599 of the year 1860, differing-however, in construcl tion from mine. (See Fig. 5 in said patent.)
Therefore I claimv A bottle-wrapper of felt having one or more corrugated belts raised from its surface, the remainder of the wrapper being uncorrugated, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ISAAC SWOPE.
