To all whom it. may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIANUs Ross, of Abilene, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.

This invention relates to traeebuckles5 and it consists in certain improvements in the coustruction of the same, which will be hereinaf-` ter more fully setforth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The frame of my improved traoebuckle consists of side pieces, A A, connected by crosspieces B G, and having their front ends curved outward and connected by a cross-piece, D. Between the rear ends of the side pieces of the frame is pivoted a lever-frame consistingV of side pieces, E E, having inwardly and rearwardly projecting ends F F, connected by a cross-piece, Gr, and forwardly-projecting ends H H, connected by a cross-piece, I. A lever, J, provided with a thumb-piece or handle, K, extendsforwardly from the cross-piece I, and a stud,' L, extends downwardly from said cross-piece, and through an opening, M, in the cross-piece B.

The side pieces, A A, are provided with loops N N for the attachment oi' back-strap and belly-band. Theinnersides of thecross-pieoes B C D I are provided with grooves or recesses the trace, which are thereby protected from wear.

The trace having the loops P P is secured upon lthe cross-picce G of the lever-frame,` the front end of which is now lifted to enable the tug to be slid between the cross-pieces D B C and under the cross-piece I into the frame. When properly adjusted the lever is lowered, the stud L passing through a suitable openin g in the tugstrap, whichl is thus secured.

It will be observed that when draft is vapplied the two frames clamp the strap securely between them, thus adding to the strength of the device, and preventing the stud L from Working or wearing an oblong holein the tugstrap.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire lto secure by LettersPatent of the United States- 1. The buckle-frame consist-ing of side pieces, A A,'connected by crosspieces B U, and having outwardly-curved front ends connected by cross-piece D, in combination with the pivoted frame consisting of side pieces, E E, having rear cross-pieceV G, and front cross-piece, I, provided with stud L and lever-handle J, when constructed and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.

2. As an improvement in trace-buckles, the combination of two frames or clamps pivoted together, and having cross-pieces provided with grooves for the accommodation of the seams in the traces, as set forth.
