This invention relates to a machine for eiiiciently, quickly and completely applying coverings to pocketbook frames and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will eliminate the present unsatisfactory and expensive practice of applying, fitting and securing coverings on frames by hand.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a machine of the above stated character which is so constructed that a pocketbook frame having a covering partly applied thereto by adhe'sive or held thereon bv hand, may be easily and ouickly placed on the machine whereby during the operation of the latter, the covering will be tightly stretched onto the frame free of wrinkles or creases and forced tightly into the ychannels of the frame so that said covering will remain firmly and smoothly applied ready to be permanently secured on the frame by clinching the latter after the securingr of the body of the pocketbook onto the frame.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating a machine for applying coverings to pocketbook frames and is constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral i indicates a base supporting a vertically arranged plate-like support 2 and journals 3 for a shaft 4, the latter being either manually or power driven. The shaft 4 is disposed horizontally and extends through an opening in the support 2 and has secured thereon cams 5, 6 and 1. The cams 5 and 6 may be of integral construction and are located on one side of the support 2 while the cam 'I is located on the other or opposite side of the support from the cams 5 and 6. 'I'he cam 5 is preferably of the track type, as clearly shown in Figures l, 8 and 2l, and is engaged by a roller 8 carried by a slide 9 forming a part of the mechanism for fully applying a pocketbook frame I0 on the machine. The slide 9 operates in guides II secured on one side face of the support 2. The slide 9 includes pivotally connected sections A and B. The section A during one position of the cam 5 moves out of the guides II so as to have a pivotal movement and has secured thereto a pocketbook frame engaging arm I2 adapted to engage with one of the fastening elements I3 of the pocketbook frame and which is conventional construction of the latter. The arm I2 when in engagement with the fastener I3 lies between the latter and the pocketbook frame. A spring I4 is connected to the sections A and B of the slide 9 so that the section A when out of the guides II will assume a position angularly to the section B for positioning the arm I2 away from the pocketbook frame or the latch element I3 thereof, as shown in Figure 5.
Mounted on the upper end of the support 2 is a pocketbook frame receiving device C consisting of yieldably connected jaw plates I 6 the upper edges of which curve outwardly and away from eachother. The jaw plates I6 may move apart on the forcing of a pocketbook frame therebetween and the opposing faces of said jaw plates have shoulders I8. Headed pins I9 extend through the jaw plates I6- and interposed between the heads thereof and said jaw plates are springs 2U acting to urge the jaw plates t0- wards each other. In one of said jaw plates is a slot 2l to permit the arm I2 to pass therethrough to engage the fastening element I3 of the pocketbook frame and to move downwardly. The headed pins I9 also extend through openings of the support 2 whereby the jaw plates are movably connected with the latter.
The device C also includes pivotally mounted jaws D each of substantially L shape and including spaced jaw plates 22 yieldably connected to each other by headed bolts 23 on which coil springs 24 are mounted. The coil springs 24 act to urge the jaw plates 22 in the direction of each other being limited in the movement in the direction of each other by the pivotal connection between said jaw plates 22 and the jaw plates I6 of the device C, the pivotal connection being indicated by the character 25. The jaws D are arranged at opposite ends of the device C and may assume outward and downward positions, as shown in Figure 1, or assume positions in an upward direction, as shown in Figures 13 and 18. Normally the jaw plates 22 are spaced away from each other approximately the same distance as the jaw plates IS and are forced apart only by their engagement with the pocketbook frame which also applies to the jaw plates I6. The jaws D have arms 26 secured thereto by the bolts 23 and are in turn pivotally and slidably connected to bell crank levers 2T pivotally mounted on the support 2 and which contact the cam 6 being forced into engagement with the latter by a coil spring 28 connecting said bell crank levers adjacent their pivotal connections with the arms 23. The cam 6 acts to move the jaws into their different positions. The opposing faces of the jaw plates 22 of the jaws have formed thereon beveled shoulders 29.
A cross head 33 is slidably mounted on the support 2 for vertical movement and includes a roller 3| which rides the cam 'I under the influence of coil springs 32 secured to the support and to the cross head. Upwardly extending levers 33 are pivotally connected to the cross head and supported in guides 34 on the support 2 and terminate a distance above the device C and have secured to their upper ends cover wedging elements or plates 35 the adjacent edges of which are formed on an angle providing pointed portions 36. The levers 33 are connected by a coil spring 3I acting to urge said levers in the direction of each other and the guides 34 cause said levers to move towards each other as the cross head 30 moves upwardly to bring the cover wedging elements or plates into overlapping relation and in a position well above the device C. However, as the cross head moves downwardly the guides 34 act to move the levers apart bringing about a separating movement of the cover wedging plates from each other as they move downwardly in the direction of the device C. The cam 'I which operates the cross head includes high portions E, F and G having between Said high portions low portions either one of which will permit a full downward movement of the cross head. The high portion E is considerably longer than the high portions F and G. The guides 313 include rollers 38 which levers 36 engage under the influence of the spring 31.
Usually pocketbook frames are composed of companion hingedly connected sections, each sec- .2:
tion of channeled formation and of substantially U shape, as shown in the drawings. The machine described is especially adapted to apply covering material 4G on each section by acting on the sections one at a time. However, this machine will successfully apply covering to pocketbook frames other than the type shown providing that the frame is of channeled construction and perhaps it may be necessary to modify the shapes of the jaws from that shown to match with the particular shape of pocketbook frame that is to be covered. Usually the sections of the pocketbook frame have secured thereto the fastening elements indicated by the character I3, however,
pocketbook frames minus such fastening elements may have covering applied thereto by this machine providing that the operator manually applies the pocketbook frame in a full applied position in the machine and in this case the arm I2 as well as the slide 9 will be omitted or rendered inoperative in any well known manner. The covering for the pocketbook frame is cut or otherwise formed into strip formation of a length suflicient to extend the full length of one of the sections of the pocketbook frame and 5 of a width to completely cover the section of the `frame with the free edges projecting well beyond the frame and at the channeled side thereof. The frame moving between the jaw plates l smoothly applies a portion of the covering on a portion of the frame and on further rotation of the shaft the cam acts to move the jaws 2"?? onto the frame applying to the covering a stretching and smoothing action so that the covering will be smoothly applied to the frame from one end of the covering to the other, the free ,1. edges projecting well beyond the channeled face oi the frame. The jaws remain in engagement with the covering while the cam 'l acts to permit the springs 32 to move the cross head downwardly, bringing the plate-like elements downwardly and outwardly. The plate-like elements moving downwardly and outwardly force the free edges of the covering tightly into the channei or" the frame, as shown in Figures 19 and 20. The roller Si of the cross head is moved from the high face E to the low face between the high faces E and G to bring about the forcing of the cover into the channel of the frame by the plate-like elements 35. The roller 3l passes ontothe high portion G which brings about upward and inward movement of the plate-like elements 35 to become disengaged from the covering and the frame. As the roller 3l passes from the high portion G to the low po-rtion between said high portion G and the high portion F the plate-like elements 35 are again forced into the channeled portion of the frame further wedging the covering therein. The roller 3| then passes onto the high portion F of the cam 'l again raising the plate-like elements 35 from the frame and covering. The roller 3i passes from the high portion F to the low portion between said high portion F and the high portion E of the cam 'l again permitting the springs 32 to move the platelike elements 35 into the channel oi the frame to further wedge the material into. the channel of the frame. During these stages of operation the jaws remain in engagement with the covering and frame and the arm l2 remains in its lowermost position maintaining the frame tightly between the plate-like jaws I6 of the holding device C. As the roller 3i passes onto the high portion E from the low portion previously engaged by the cam '5, the plate-like elements 35 are raised away from the frame and towards f.: each other and at this time the cam 5 raises the slide Si and the spring i4 actsto position the arm i2 free of the latch element of the pocketbook frame, aiso the cam 5 acts to move the jaws Z2 away from the pocketbook frame. The operator then may lift the pocketbook frame on? of the machine with the covering smoothly and tightly applied and wedged into the channel ci' the frame ready to have the usual body of the pocketbook attached thereto by insertion into the channel of the frame and the clinching of the frame thereon by any well known method.

plate-like elements 35 on the cover and frame for the purpose of wedging the covering in the channel of the frame to be suiiicient the portions F and G of the cam 'l may be omitted, these portions only being employed so that a triple action of the plate-like elements 35 will be had on the covering and the pocketbook ira-me.
The pocketbook frame when moved fully between therjaw plates I6 of the holding device C assumes a position below the shoulders i8 so that said shoulders move over the channeled face of the frame and thereby securely support the trame to be acted on by the jaws 2i and the plate-like elements 35. The tapering faces Zita of the jaws act to guide the covering over the channeled face ofthe frame as said jaws move into cover applying position. When the jaws move into inoperative or non-cover applying position and as they move relative to the frame they are spread apart and move therewith the plate-like jaw i6 ofthe holding device C so as to free the frame from the holding device C.
Pocketbook frames are covered with various kinds of materials. However, a large percentage of the frames are covered with material having a cloth backing. The present practice is to apply the covering by hand and the covering must be cut on the bias causing a large waste of material, also the material is cut by hand making a very slow and expensive procedure. With the use of the present machine as described in this application the material may be cut in the direction of the grain or weave and only on the bias if desired. Cutting the material in the direction of the weave reduces to a minimum the waste of materials. Rolls of the material may be cut by machine eliminating hand cutting and may lbe accomplished quicker and cheaper. In some instances the covering may be treated on one face with adhesive. In other instances, the initial applying of the covering at points on the frame manually may be accomplished by applying adhesive onto the frame at said points and bringing the covering in contact therewith. In other instances, when it is not desired to apply adhesive the covering may be held by the operator at the selected points on the frame when the latter is applied on the machine.
What is claimed is:
l. A machine of the character described comprising a support, a holding means carried by said support including yieldably connected plate-like jaws adapted to have a pocketbook frame with a partially applied covering engaged therewith, an arm to engage the pocketbook frame and draw said pocketbook frame and covering between the plate-like jaws, a guide mounted on said support, a slide movable in said guide and having a hinged section to which said arm is fixed, said section operable to positions in and out of said guide for actuating said arm, a spring connected to said slide and said hinged section biasing said section out of alignment with said guide for maintaining said arm out of engagement with said pocketbook frame when said hinged section is moved out of said guide, said section being forced into alignment with said guide as it isv moved therein, a cam mechanism carried by said support and connected to said slide for operating said hinged section into and out of said guide whereby to effect engagement and disengagement of said arm with said pocketbook frame respectively, jaws pivotally connected to said first means and including yieldably connected jaw plates, linkage connected to said jaws for the actuation of the latter to bring about stretching of the covering on the frame and positioning of edges of the covering adjacent a channel in the frame, said linkage being pivoted to the support for the operation of the jaws, a cam mechanism for operating said linkage, means for forcing the edges of the covering into the channel of the frame, and a cam mechanism for operating said last-named means.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a` support, a holding means carried by said support including yieldably connected platelike jaws adapted to have a pocketbook frame with a partially applied covering engaged therewith, an arm to engage the pocketbook frame and draw said pocketbook frame and covering between the plate-like jaws, a guide mounted on said support, a slide movable in said guide and having a hinged section to which said arm is fixed, said section operable to positions in and out of said guide for actuating said arm, a spring connected to said slide and said hinged section biasing said section out of alignment with said guide for maintaining said arm out of engagement with said pocketbook frame when said hinged section is moved out of said guide, said section being forced into alignment with said guide as it is moved therein, a cam mechanism carried by said support and connected to said slide for operating said hinged section into and out of said guide whereby to effect engagement and disengagement of said arm with said pocketbook frame respectively, jaws pivotally connected to said rst means and including yieldably connected jaw plates, linkage connected to said jaws for the actuation of the latter to bring about stretching of the covering on the frame and positioning of edges of the covering adjacent a channel in the frame, said linkage being pivoted to the support for the operation of the jaws, a cam mechanism for operating said linkage, means for forcing the edges of the covering into the channel of the frame and including slidably mounted levers on said support each having secured thereto a platelike element movable towards and from each other and having downward and upward movements, a cross head slidable on the support and connected to said levers, spring means connected to said cross head and to the support, and a cam mechanism engageable with the cross head.
3. The elements of claim 2 as set forth and dened therein including, a power shaft journaled on the support and having the cam mechanisms secured thereto.
4. The elements of claim 2 as set forth and defined therein including, a power shaft journaled on the support and having the cam mechanisms secured thereto, and shoulders formed on opposing faces of the jaw plates of said rst means, said plates of the jaws having opposed beveled faces.
