GARMENT COVER AND THE METHOD QF CONSTRUCTING THE SAME Filed Feb. 16,1938 I INVENTOR filo/awe A7772 avgi ATTORN Y Patented Sept. 5, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARMENT COVER AND' THE METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING THE SAME Claims.
This invention relates to devices for use upon garments and other articles of apparel when suspended from a hanger for protecting the top, shoulder and neck portions of the garment or 5 other article of apparel, especially in the storage and display thereof, and the object of the invention is to provide a cover of the class described formed froma substantially rectangular sheet of paper or other thin material, folded and secured together to form front and rear portions joined at the upper edge with an opening for receiving a garment hanger hook, one side portion of the cover being formed from an uninterrupted portion of the sheet, whereas the other side portion thereof consisting of opposed sides of the sheet are brought together and have overlapping corner portions which are glued or otherwise secured together so as to form downwardly extending and substantially pointed ends to the separate parts forming the last mentioned side portion of the cover, a further object being to provide a cover of the class described, the first named side portion of which includes a protruding ticket portion joining the cover in a rupturable or perforated line whereby the ticket may be removed whenever desired, a further object being to provide a device of the'character described which, by virtue of the method of its construction, is formed from an elongated strip of material which is so cut as to form a successive series of covers from waste of such material, and still further to a method of creasing, folding and securing the parts of the blank together in forming the cover as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, .of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which: V s
Fig. 1 is a front view of one form of my device made according to my invention and diagrammaticallyillustrating the method of its use. Fig.2 is a plan view of a blank from which the device shown in Fig. 1 is formed.
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. lis a view similar to Fig. 1 showing an- 505: other form of construction, and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank from device shown in Fig. 4., is formed.
In the storage and display of garments and other articles of apparel it is customary to arrang'e the same upon hangers supported on a which the the material of the strip without anyrack or other mounting in display cabinets, in closets, on racks, and in like places, both in the commercial display of merchandise of this kind as well as in the storage of apparel in closets or wardrobes in the home. The purpose of my invention is to provide a covering or shield for the upper shoulder and neck portions of garments or apparel, supported or suspended in this manner, to eliminate the collection of dust thereon. In view of the extensive possible use for devices of this kind, it is desirable to produce the same as economically as possible in order .that a relatively large number of the devices may be sold at a reasonable price, not only for the commercial use of the display, but also for the home use thereof.
To accomplish the results above claimed, I have conceived a method of so cutting each sheet, from which the complete device is formed, from an elongated strip of paper or other material, so as to eliminate all waste, and to effectively utilize every'portion of the sheet in the resulting blank to produce the desired function in the resulting article.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing I have indicated at H] in dotted lines, a strip or sheet of suitable paper. At H I have shown one of the successive series of blanks which are cut from the strip In. One edge I2 of the blank has a central rectangular notch l3 extending approximately one-third the way across the main body portion of the blank. The notch or recess portion l3 forms on the other edge [4 of a previous blank, a ticket or tab l5 joining the edge M in a rupturable or perforated line l6 whereby the ticket l5 may be removed whenever desired. This ticket may have printed or otherwise applied thereto any indicia which may be desired.
The sides of the blank at the ends of the edge I2 terminate in projecting pointed flags H which serve to protect a greater portion of the garment as will appear from a consideration of Fig. 10f the drawing. The size of these flaps may be varied to suit diiferent uses for which the resulting device or devices are intended. The formation of the flaps l1 upon the edge I2 of the blank will result in angular or beveled corners These beveled and will l8 at the ends of the edge I4. corners will produce a neater appearance substantially parallel other edges of the complete device as seen in Fig. 1. In addition to producing a neater appearance these beveled corners will obviate folding or wrinkling of the cover when placing two garments side by side, especially upon a crowded or congested rack.
In forming the blank ll two creases l9 and 20 are formed therein extending from the edge M to the side edges of the blank in the angular arrangement shown in Fig. 1, so that in the successive steps of the method in forming the complete device, side portions 2| and 22 may be folded inwardly upon a part 23 in the manner shown in Fig. 1, with a corner portion 24 arranged over a corner portion 25. Prior to this operation a section of glue or other adhesive 26 is applied to one of the corner portions 24, 25, the corner portion 24 in the construction shown, so that said overlapped corner portions will be secured together in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. In fact, the application of the glue 26 may be applied to the sheet prior to die cutting the same.
In this connection it will be understood that the cover devices are produced automatically in a successive series of operations in a suitable machine into which the strip ID is fed. The glue is applied, the blanks I I cut and then folded and creased along the lines I9 and 20 producing the result shown in Fig. 1. After this, the resulting devices may be bundled or packed for shipment and in some cases the same may be folded upon itself a number of times to form smaller packages. The latter would be especially desirable in retailing a. half-dozen or dozen of the devices for domestic use.
It will be understood that in folding and securing the parts 2| and 22 together, an opening 21 is formed at the top of the device through which a hook 28 of a garment hanger 29 may be passed in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. In said figure I have indicated in dotted lines at 3B the upper portion of a garment arranged upon the hanger and supported within the cover or shield.
It will be understood that the device may be arranged in any manner upon the garment, but for the sake of description, the part 23 will be said to cover the back of the garment and the parts 2! and 22 collectively covering the front of the garment.
In a device of the character described it is primarily important that the shoulders and neck of the garment be protected. However, with my construction the cover or shield extends downwardly, at the back as well as at the front of the garment to provide a relatively large shielding area which will, to a great degree, prevent the collection of dust upon any part of the garment.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing I have shown a slightmodificaticn wherein a blank Hat is formed from a strip [Ba and is cut to form a notch or recess l3a and resulting ticket or tab l5a. The blank Ha is scored as seen at 19a and 28a, all substantially as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The adhesive is indicated at Zita. In other words, the only difierence between the structure shown in Fig. 5 and that shown in Fig. 2 is in omitting the flaps II and the resulting beveled corners E3 on the complete device, thus producing on the finished device the result substantially the same as that illustrated in Fig. 4. An opening 21a is formed in the top of thedevice similar to the opening 27, and the side portions 21a and 22a will have their corners 24a, 25a overlapped and secured together as in the construction shown in Fig. l. The type of structure shown in Figs. 4 and 5 would be desirable for use on larger garments, such as overcoats and the like to give greater protection to the shoulder portions of the garment. However, with lighter materials and smaller garments, the structure shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing is more desirable for the reasons stated.
It will be understood that the device may be made from any kind or class of sheet material, including Cellophane and similar transparent materials or semitransparent or translucent materials, as well as from lightweight papers of any kind or class which may be printed or otherwise characterized to give attractive appearance thereto.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is:
1. Ihe herein described method of forming garment covers of the class described, which consists in providing an elongated strip of sheet material, successively cutting and scoring said sheet to form a blank having a notch centrally of one edge, a projecting ticket centrally of the opposed edge, and diverging score lines extending from the base of the notch to opposite sides of said blank forming foldable side parts at opposite sides of the notch in said blank, then folding the blank on said score lines to bring said side parts one upon the other and upon the body of the blank with adjacent corner portions of said parts arranged in overlapped relation to each other, securing said overlapped corner portions together to form the resulting garment cover, then forming another garment cover blank from the next section of the sheet, and forming the notch of the second blank by the ticketed portion of the preceding blank to eliminate any waste of material in the production of a successive series of devices.
2. The herein described method of forming garment covers of the class described, which consists in providing an elongated strip of sheet material, successively cutting and scoring said sheet to form a blank having a. notch centrally of one edge, a projecting ticket centrally of the opposed edge, and diverging score lines extending from the base of the notch to opposite sides of said blank, forming foldable side parts at opposite sides of the notch in said blank, then folding the blank on said score lines to bring said side parts one upon the other and upon the body of the blank with adjacent corner portions of said parts arranged in overlapped relation to each other, securing said overlappedcorner portions together to form the resulting garment cover, then forming another garment cover blank from the next section of the sheet, forming the notch of the second blank by the ticketed portion of the preceding blank to eliminate any waste of material in the production of a successive series of devices, and so cutting each blank as to form projecting flaps at the first named edge thereof and correspondingly beveled corners at the other edge thereof.
