Claims.
The present invention relates to sanitary waste cans or garbage receptacles of the type having an outer shell provided with a hinged cover or lid adapted to be actuated by a foot lever, and an 5 inner removable container supported within the outer shell.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a Waste receiver of this type in which the inner container is normally closely covered and sealed in the rim region thereof by a lid, hinged to the outer shell, to prevent obnoxious odors from the garbage or waste from collecting in the shell and emanating therefrom.
It is another object of the invention to provide such a waste receiver in which the pedal operated lid, in addition to having sealing engagement with the rim of the inner container, simultaneously has sealing engagement with the annular wall thereof, and also has sealing engagement with the upper rim of the outer shell.
A still further object of the invention, in waste receivers of this type, is to sustain the inner container within the outer shell in such a manner as to avoid a gap between the upper rim of the outer shell and the annular wall of the inner container so that material cannot nd its Way in the receptacle between the shell and the inner container.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a waste receiver of this type in which the sustaining means, above referred to, for the inner container consists in the formation of an external annular bead a short distance below the upper rim of the inner container of sufcient depth to provide a deep continuous channel or groove within the container into which the fingers may be inserted to facilitate gripping and removal of the container from the outer shell.
The provision of a Waste receiver in which both the inner container and the outer shell are of uniform contour and are characterized by an absence of supporting bails or interconnecting couplings, thus contributing toward economy of manufacture, are further desiderata that have been borne in mind in the production and development of the present invention.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof ensues.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a Waste can embodying the present invention and showing a portion of a cover or lid, employed in connection therewith, broken away for the purpose of clarity;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially in the vertical plane passing through the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail vertical sectional view illustrating the manner in which the inner 1 5 waste container is sustained within the outer shell; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating the manner in which the inner waste container may be removed from its outer shell. l()
The device involves in its general organization an outer shell I0 of cylindrical form pro-vided at its lower edge with an inwardly rolled lower edge II which serves both as a reinforcing bead and support for the shell. The upper edge of the 1,5 shell I0 is rolled outwardly to provide a reinforcing bead I2 or Wire edge. The shell II), being of cylindrical form and being provided with upper and lower rolled edges, thus presents a smooth appearance. 20
The upper end of the shell I0 is provided with a vertically swinging cover or lid I3, pivoted by a strap I4 to a bracket I5 secured to the rear of the shell adjacent the top thereof.
Any suitable means may be employed for raisi ing the cover to its open position, that shownv in the drawing being preferable, and consisting of a horizontal rock-shaft I6 which extends across the shell at the lower end thereof and terminating at its front end in. a foot pedal Il and at its rear end in a crank arm I8 connected by a link I9 to the cover strap I4.
The cover I3 is provided with a depending annular peripheral apron 20 or skirt, the lower edge of which is rolled outwardly to provide an annular reinforcing and supporting bead 2| which, when the cover is in its closed position, engages the rolled edge I2 of the shell I0.
Removably sustained within the outer shell I0 is a waste receptacle or container 22, generally `4,() of cylindrical form, which is provided with a bottom 23 and an inwardly rolled upper edge providing a reinforcing bead or rim 24 for the container. The diameter of the cylindrical Wall of the container is slightly less than the diameter of the cylindrical Wall of the shell IIJ.
A short distance below the rim 2d, the container 22 is provided with an annular external bead 25. The maximum external diameter of the bead or shoulder 25 is slightly greater than the diameter of the cylindrical wall of the shell II), thus permitting the inner container 22 to pendantly hang on the rolled edge or rim I2 of the latter with the cylindrical wall of the container extending down- 'wardly into the shell in spaced relation thereto 55 to a point adjacent the bottom thereof. The maximum external diameter of the bead or shoulder 25, however, is considerably less than the diameter of the outwardly rolled edge l2 of the shell l, while the internal diameter of the apron 2li of the cover I3 is substantially equal to the maximum external diameter of this bead 25. Thus the outwardly rolled edge 2i of the depending apron 20, when the cover is in its closed position, engages and makes sealing Contact with the outwardly rolled edge l2 of the shell i and is centered thereon by the annular bead 25 with which it also makes sealingr contact, f
The height of the inwardly rolled edge or rim 24 of the container 22 above the circular line of contact Ibetween the bead 25 of the container and the outwardly rolled edge I2 of the shell and the height of the lower inner surface 2li of the cover I3 above the circular line of contact between the outwardly rolled edge l2 of the shell le, are calculated so that when the cover I3 is in its closed position, the inner surface 255 0f the cover` i3 primarily rests upon and makes sealing contact with the inwardly rolled edge or rim 2f! of the container 22 and seals the same against the escape of objectionable odors or gases which may be generated within the container. Since the cover i3 makes sealing contact with the inwardly rolled edge or rim of the container 22 and with the external shoulder 25 thereof, and also with the outwardly rolled edge of the shell lil upon which a portion of its weight is distributed, the inner receptacle 22 is provided with a triple seal against the escape of objectionable odors or gases therefrom.
The external shoulder or bead 25 formed on the inner container 22 is o-f suflicient depth to provide a deep continuous channel 2l into which the fingers of the user may be inserted in the manner indicated in Fig. 4 to remove the loosely pendant inner container from the outer shell i.
Modifications may be resorted to within the scopeof the appended claims,
We claim:
1. In a waste receptacle of the character described, the combination with an outer openended cylindrical shell having a relatively wide upper rim having a cover hinged thereto and provided with a depending apron adapted to seat upon and be supported by the upper rim of said shell when said cover is in its closed position, of an inner removable cylindrical waste container provided with an annular outwardly extending circumferential rib providing an annular channel on the inside of the container medially of its ends, said rib being adapted to loosely rest upon said Lipper rim of the shell inside of the apron whereby said container is supported within the shell, the upper rim of said container bearing against the inner surface of said cover in sealing contact therewith when said container is in position within said shell and said cover is in its closed position.
2. A waste receptacle comprising an outer cylindrical shell having an outwardly rolled reinforcing rim, an inner removable waste container', said container being provided with an annular outwardly extending circumferential rib medially of its ends, said rib loosely resting upon said reinforcing rim at the inner region thereof in sealing Contact therewith and comprising the sole supporting means for the container within the shell, said rib providing a relatively deep annular channel on the inside of the container wall into which the fingers or the user of the receptacle may be inserted to facilitate removal of the container from the shell, and a cover hinged to said. shell and seating upon the upper rim thereof outside of the rib with the inner surface of the cover bearing against the upper rim of the container in sealing Contact therewith.
3. A waste receptacle comprising an Outer cylindrical shell having an outwardly rolled reinforcing rim at its upper end, an inner removable waste container, said container being provided with an annular outwardly extending circumferential rib medially of its ends, said rib loosely resting upon said reinforcing rim at the inner region thereof in sealing contact therewith and comprising the sole supporting means for the container within the shell, said rib providing an annular channel on` the inside of the container into which the fingers of the user of the receptacle may be inserted to facilitate removal of the container from the shell, and a cover for the receptacle hinged to the shell and having a `depending flange, the lower edge of the iiange seating upon said reinforcing rim and bearing against the rib of the container, the underneath side of the cover bearing against the upper rim of the container in sealing Contact therewith above the level of the rib.
4. A waste receptacle comprising an outer cylindrical shell having an outwardly rolled reinforcing rim, an innein removable waste container, said container being provided with an annular outwardly extending circumferential rib medially of its ends, said rib loosely resting upon said reinforcing rim at the inner region thereof in sealing f contact therewith, said rib providing a relatively deep annular channel on the inside or the container wall into which the fingers of the user of the receptacle may be inserted to facilitate removal of the container from the shell, and a cover f hinged to said shell and seating upon the upper rim thereof outside of the rib with the inner sur-- face of the cover bearing against the upper rim of the container in sealing contact therewith.
5. A waste receptacle comprising an outer cylindrical shell having an outwardly rolled reinforcing rim, an inner removable waste container, said container being provided with an annular outn wardly extending circumferential rib medially of its ends, said rib loosely resting upon said reinforcing rim at the inner region thereof in sealing Contact therewith and comprising a supporting means for the container within the shell, said rib providing a relatively deep annular channel on the inside of the container wall into which the fingers of the user of the receptacle may be inserted to facilitate removal of the container from the shell, and a cover hinged to said shell and having a depending flange, the lower edge of the flange seating upon said outwardly rolled reinforcing rim,
