Patented Aug. 22, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to an apparatus for flushing toilets which will not back Siphon and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a flushing apparatus of this 5h; class which will not overflow;
` Second, to provide a flushing apparatus. of this class with novel valve for the control of the water;
Third, to provide a ushing apparatus of this ly class with novel means for operating the water iiow valve;
Fourth, to provide a iiushing apparatus of this class with novel venting means;
Fifth, to provide a iiushing apparatus of this l5., class with novel water discharge apparatus;
` Sixth, to provide a flushing apparatus of this class in which none of the parts will stick to prevent the normal operation of the apparatus throughout;
20 Seventh, to provide an apparatus of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, efcient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order. 25 With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions: asv will be hereinafter described in detail and particu- 30 larly Set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the. accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:

Sealed in the bottom of this tank body I is a tank bottom 3 which is also concavoconvex in the preferable form. Positioned in the bottom and Sealed with the bottom member 3 close to the side wall of the tank body I is the inlet tube 4 which is adapted to let the water into the tank. This tube extends to near the top o-f the tank as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing. rMounted in this bottom 3 on the opposite side of the center from the tube 4 is an overflow and vent tube l which extends'downwardly below the bottom as shown at 'la in Fig. 3 of the drawing and its upper end is provided with a right angled bend lb, and communicating with the upper side thereof is a vent tube 6 which extends out through the tank top 2, preferably at the center, for providing avent to the atmosphere and it is secured to the top by means of nuts 6a and 6b on opposite sides of the top forming a seal with the tank top 2 shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Positioned in the extended end of the portion lo is a valve seat lo through which is a central opening 7d, and mounted outwardly of said Valve ld in the portion lb is a ball valve which is retained by means of a cotter pin 'le shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing, thus providing a check valve vfor preventing the flow oi water from the tank through the tube '1, but permits the venting of the tank when the water in the tank lowers sufficiently to permit the valve 5 to open.
The bottom 3 is provided with a large central opening 3a which serves as a. discharge for the water in the flushing operation. Mounted over this opening 3o on the lower side of the bottom 3 is the discharge casing 8, there being a gasket Sa of rubber or rubber composition interposed between the casing and said bottom. This casing is provided with a central bore 8b and the gasket 8a has a bore conforming thereto, the edge of which provides a valve seat 8c. This casing is provided with a downwardly extending cylindrical portion 8d, the lower end of which is threaded at 8e to form a connection with the toilet or other fixture for the discharge of water. This casing 8 is provided with an extended recess `8f which communicates with the bore 8b and extends outwardly past the Side of the lower end la of the tube l, the lower. end Ia of the tube 'I being screw threaded in the casing abo-ve said recess 8f, thus providing communication between the tube 'l and the bore 8b.v The casing 8 is provided on the opposite sides of the recess 8f with a bore 8g in which is revolubly mounted a shank 9a of the operating handle member 9, on the extended end of which is mounted the operating handle 9 which is positioned on the shank in slightly unbalanced relation as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the one end being heavier than the other and tending to turn the shank. Mounted around the Shank 9a is a stufling box 9b to form a sealed joint between the casing 8 and the shank 9a. The end of the shank 9a is provided with a flat portion 9c and upon which is mounted the valve operating cam it which is provided with valve engaging webs Ird and IGZ) separated by notches Ic. It is also provided with a water engaging ledge Id. This valve IIi is shown in position for raising the valve for providing the discharge of the water shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing and shown in released p-osition with the discharge valve closed in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Positioned over the opening formed by the bore 8b is a valve member guide I4 supported upon sleeves Ia shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawing which are positioned on bolts 55h which extend through the gasket 8a and into the casing 8. There are three of these bolts and sleeves as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing which support a spider I5 shown best in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing, thus providing a rigid support for the valve member guide IQ. This valve member guide I4 is provided with a skirt portion Illa which extends downwardly in cylindrical form and with a concavo-convex cup shaped portion Elib which extends downwardly into the portion Illa shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Reciprocally mounted upwardly and downwardly in .this skirt portion Ida is the valve member I3.
This valve member I3 includes an upwardly eX- tending cylindrical portion I3a open at its upper end and adapted to t loosely in the skirt member Iii so as to permit a slight passage between the members I3a and Ilia, but the member lila forming a guide for the valve I3 in its upward and downward reciprocation. This valve member I3 also includes the beveled angular portion ISD which forms the valve seat with the seatI portion 8b of the gasket 8a. This valve member also includes a flat bottom portion ISC which is pro vided with a central hole i3d and surrounding this hole i3d is an upwardly extending flange portion I3e which forms a valve for the valve member II which is preferably rubber orrulober composition, a flat valve member adapted to rest on the flange I3@ when the valve is closed. Said valve Il is provided with a stem member I2 secured thereto by means of a bolt IIa and washer I Ib. This stem is shaped as shown best in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing and provided with a flange E20, which extends past the sides vof the opening i3d and forms a stop for the upward movement .of the valve. This valve stem I2 is provided with a recess I2b in its lower end adapting it for engagement with the portion lila of the valve operating cam ID, shown best in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing.
The operation of my anti-back siphon flushing apparatus for toilets is substantially as follows:
The tank consisting of the members I, 2, and 3 is substantially filled with water through the inlet tube 4 which connects with the water service pipe or other water supply. The tank being sealed will i-lll except any air space that might be in the upper portion of the tank above the branch 'Ib` of the tube I. When it is desired todischarge the water for flushing the toilet, the handle 9 is turned with the long end up, the cam portion Ilia engaging the portion i217 of the valve stem I2 and raising this valve stem until the iiange IZaV engages the lower side of the valve member I3 whereupon the valve member I3 is raised and telescoped within the guide member Illa until the valve reaches the position shown in4 Fig. 4 of the drawing. As soon as the handle is released it drops back because the water running through the bore 8h engages the flange IIJd and throws this cam into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the flow of the water between the beveled portion ISb of the valve I3 and the valve seat 8c together with the vacuum or suction operation of the valve in the guide Ilia holds the valve I3 up and in open position as shown in Fig. 4 until the water has lowered to a position that admits air below the lower edge of the apron member Ida whereupon the valve I3 will drop to closed position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the tank will immediately fill again, it being noted that the tank is vented for the discharge of the water through the vent 5 and check valve 5. However, when the water raises high enough in the tank this check valve will again close and hold the water, the valve II serving to properly vent the valve I3 for its telescopic action in the guide Iii.
Though I have shown` and described a particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination, and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an anti-back siphon iiushing apparatus for toilets, the combination of a water supply tank, an overflow and vent tube communicating with the outlet from said tank below the discharge valve and communicating with the atmosphere above said tank, a check valve in connection with said tube opening into said tank inwardly of said Vent, a telescopically mounted hollow water receiving valve adapted to seat at the discharge opening of said tank, a control valve seated in said telescopically mounted hollow water receiving valve centrally of its lower side, and cam means for opening both of said control and telescopically mounted valves, said cam means provided with a water engaging flange for shifting said cam upon the discharge oi water from said tank.
2. In an anti-back siphon for toilets, the combination of a water supply tank, an overflow and vent tube positioned in said tank communicating with the outlet from said tank below the discharge valve and communicating with the atmosphere through the upper wall of said tank, a check valve in connection with said tube opening into said tank inwardly of said vent near the upper side of said tank, a telescopically mounted hollow water receiving valve adapted to seat in the discharge opening of said tank, a control valve seated in said telescopically mounted hollow water receiving valve centrally of its lower side and extending some distance below the same provided with a flange thereon adapted to engage the lower side of said telescopically mounted valve when shifting and opening the same, cam means for engagement with said control valve at its lower end for raising both said control valve and said telescopically mounted valve, said cam means provided with a water engaging flange for shifting said cam upon the discharge of water from said tank.
