IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,74 2, dated June 24, 1879; application filed February 13, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH LANDIS, of Doylestown, county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Portable Fence; and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which makeapart of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of portable fences known as zigzag fences, though it is equally applicable to portable fences of any other nature which consist of separate I panels secured each to the adjacent one.

Myinvention consists of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 presents a View of one of the panels. Fig. 2 presents a separate View of one of thelinks and its pin. Fig. 3 presents a view of a zigzag fence formed by fastening adjacent panels together.

AA are the bars composing one of the panels. B B are two uprights, which embrace the bars at a short distance back from one end, said uprights being opposite each other, upon opposite sides of the bars A. B B are two uprights, embracing the bars A at the other end of the panel. These uprights, it will be seen, are not placed opposite each other 5 but one is placed at the end of the bars, while the other is on the other side of the bars, but located a short distance back from the ends of the bars.

This construction is designed especially for the purpose of forming a zigzag fence such as is shown in Fig. 3, in which it will be observed that the ends of the bars A of the adjacent section or panel abut the first panel in the angle between the upright 13 and the bars A of the first, in which position it is held by the link 0.

(J is the open link, made of about the form shown, and of any suitable material. Its ends the fence are united by opening the link 0 and slipping it through between the uprights, so as to embrace one of the bars A, as shown, one of its arms extending above and the other below the bar, and the same arms are madein like manner to embrace the upright and bar of the adjacent panel, after which the pin or cross'bar (3 is engaged and the fastening is complete. I propose generally to employ two such links at each end of the panel-one near the top and one near the bottom of the fence.

It will be observed that but one of the posts or uprights B and the post B extend to the ground. This is simply an expedient for saving a useless waste of material and it is also manifest that I may employ only one upright B and the upright B and dispense with the other two for the same reason. I prefer, however, generally, to make it as shown.

It will be seen that the links at the ends of the panels are of such form and so located that they serve as hinges, about which either panel may swing, and this enables an opening to be made at any time by simply drawing out the pins '0, and at any point along the line of the fence, after which the panels may be swung opened.

A fence of this construction is strong and durable, is cheap, and readily adjusted.

The links 0 are in the nature of yokes, and it is apparent that instead of terminating in the form of eyes the eyes might be on the crosspiece 0.

What I claim is The panel for a portable zigzag fence,.-6onsistin g of barsAA, embraced at one end by two opposite uprights, B B, and at the other end by two uprights, B and B one at the end and the other at a short distance back from the end of said bars, substantially as and for the purposes described.
