CARRIER IRON AND BRAKE FULCRUM Filed Sept. 4,1937
Patented July 18, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICIE CARRIER IRON AND BRAKE FULGRUM Ray G. Aurien, Chicago, Ill., assignor to American Steel Foundries, Chicago, 111., a corporation of New Jersey Application September 4, 1937, Serial No. 162,410
14 Claims. (01. 188205) My invention is directed to a novel form of steel casting designed for use as a railway car underframe reinforcing member, a carrier iron and a fulcrum means for brakes associated with said car. ure 3 is an end elevation; 6'
In certain types of railway cars it is desirable Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional to make such a connection between the car body view through a railway car structure showing a and the brake rigging, which is normally supportion of the underframe and a portion of the ported on the car truck, as will prevent a resultcar truck with my novel reinforcing casting and ant of forces tending to move the truck away fulcrum bracket incorporated therein; and 10- from the center pin connection with the car Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the body. One such type of truck and brake arcar and truck structure shown in Figure 4. rangement is described in detail in the co-pend- Describing in more detail the form of my novel ing Hedgcock application bearing Serial No. casting generally indicated at I, it will be seen 15, 72,894 and filed in the United States Patent that the casting comprises a plate-like body por- Oflice April 6, 1936, wherein fulcrum connections t On 2 elevated t s pp ends as at 4 and 6 are provided on opposite sides of the bolster in and reinforced throughout the major portion of the same plane thereof in order to prevent a its length by the vertically disposed longitudinal tendency to rotate the bolster and, at the same flange 8 which merges at one end into the eletime, a fulcrum point for the brake rigging as vated portion 4 d at t pp end into the 20 a Whole is provided by a connection to the underbrake lever fulcrum structure generally indicated frame of the car body in the vicinity of the at H The opposite ends of the casting are procoupler carrier iron. In the construction shown vi-ded with the rivet holes l2, l2 forming a means in the Hedgcock application above referred to, of connection to the spaced center sills l4, I4
5 as Well as in the embodiment shown herein for (Figure 0- Reinforcing t e juncture of the illustrative purposes, a lever forming a portion brake lever fulcrum Ill and the elevated end of the brake system is fulcrumed at a point portion 6 is the vertical flange It. The upper intermediate its ends at a convenient point along Surface of the Plate 2 along e Center Portion the center sill forming a part of the car body thereof as at 8, I8 affords a seat for the yoke underframe. Inasmuch as such an arrangement, no y Su rou ding the draft gear. In the 30 where required, results in the application of unvicinity of the bracket H! the casting is widened usual stresses to the center sill, I have designed as at 2B n Order to form t e transverse slot 22 a special form of carrier iron, fulcrum bracket of a Width suitable to accommodate the central and reinforcing casting which may be made use portion Of the brake lever u e of in such an arrangement of railway brake fla p and bottom faces 0f the Slot 22 desig- 35 rigging. nated respectively 26 and 28 closely confine the An object of my invention is to design a novel brake lever 24 and prevent tilting thereof. The form of center sill brace, carrier iron and brake lever 2 is secured within the slot by means of fulcrum which will accommodate such constructhe pin 39 which is received in the aligned opentions as are above referred to. ings 32 and 34 formed respectively in the bottom 40 A more specific object is to design a steel castand top walls of said slot, said pin 30 being ing which will permit the fulcruming from the retained in position by the bolt and nut assembly car body of the brake rigging associated with 36 which is secured in the aligned openings 38 the railway car truck While, at the same time, and 46 formed respectively on the ears 42 and 45 furnishing reinforcement of the center sill struc- 44 at the bottom of the fulcrum structure. 40
ture to compensate for the additional stresses In Figures 4 and 5 I have shown a typical apinvolved. plication of my novel form of casting to the With these and various other objects in view, underframe of a car body. It will be apparent the invention may consist of certain novel feathat my novel casting is secured to the center DU tures of construction and operation as will be sills at the normal position of the carrier iron, more fully described and particularly pointed out between the car end and the bolster IS. The in the specification, drawing and claims apcasting l is secured to the under surface of the pended hereto. spaced center sills I4, M as by means of the In the drawing which illustrates an embodirivets 45, 45, the depressed central portion of its ment of the device: upper surface forming a seat I8 for the yoke 55 normally associated with the draft gear, said casting having adjacent one end thereof the novel form of brake lever fulcrum 10 as above described. The brake lever 24 is received in the slot 22 as most clearly seen in Figure 4 and secured therein at a point intermediate its ends by the pin 30.
Other portions of the brake rigging may normally be connected to the opposite ends of the brake lever 24 as at 48 and as shown for example in the above described Hedgcock application Serial No. 72,894.
It will thus be seen that in my novel form of composite casting I have provided at a critical point a substantial reinforcement for the spaced center sills of the car body while, at the same time, furnishing an adequate carrier iron and a satisfactory form of fulcrum connection for brakes normally associated with the truck upon which the car body is supported.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
