  • An article of furniture comprising a chair including a back and a seat, a desk arranged over and extending forwardly from the seat, a head secured toy the desk for supporting it, an upstanding shank merging at its upper end into the head, ashank receiving, carrying and supporting structure including an upstanding part in which the shank is slidably mounted and adjusted relative thereto, said part being arranged at one side of the chair and provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending portion secured to the seat, said structure including a bracing portion extending rearwardly from said upstanding part and being secured to the the back of the chair, an adjustable clamping means carried by said upstandng part, extending into and correlated with said shank for clamping'the latter in its normal and adjusted positions, and said shank having its lower end provided with adjustable means bearing against one face of said upstanding part for disposing the shank in angular relation with respect to said upstanding part.

This invention relates to an article of furniture, more particularly to a combined desk, chair and pedestal structure designed primarily for use in school and lecture rooms, but it is to be un- 5 derstood that it is to be employed in any con- 10 desk capable of being vertically adjusted upwardly, downwardly and angularly relative to the chair independently of the latter, whereby when the structure is to be used it may be so adjusted to afford the maximum amount of comfort to the user. l
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the type referred to including a combined arm rest and desk element, a chair 20 including a seat and a back and upwardly and downwardly adjustable supporting means for said element connected to said seat and back.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
. 25 balanced structure of the type referred to which will stay in place when positioned on a floor or other support, whether said structure be anchored or non-anchored to the oor or support. A further object of the invention is to provide,
i 30 in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of furniture including a chair and desk arranged above the seat of the chair in forwardly extended relation to the latter, said desk and chair having secured therewith coacting means for sup- Y,35 porting the desk and to permit of the desk being adjusted upwardly and downwardly, forwardly and rearwardly and angularly with respect to the seat of the chair.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
l 40 in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure including a desk, a seat, a pedestal, a vertically adjusting attachment for the seat possessing resiliency and an adjusting attachment for the desk possessing resiliency.
45 A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to including a chair capable of maintaining its proper balance with respect to a oor or other support regardless of the 50 weight placed thereon or parts connected thereto, whether desk is attached to iioor or left loose.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to including a sus- 55 pended desk so arranged whereby the increase of weight thereon does not change the proper balance of the desk with respect to the floor line whether attached to floor or left loose.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to including a chair which maintains its proper center of gravity and perfect balance with respect to the floor line even after weight is placed thereon or parts attached thereto, whether desk is attached to floor or left` loose.
A further object of the invention relates to the new and improved combined desk supporting and adjusting attachment and a coupling and anchoring means for the attachment.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to including a pedestal for the seat of a chair, said pedestal having a stationary section and a vertically adjustable section, said stationary section including a base merging into a hollow standard slightly off center with respect to the base, said adjustable section including a head for connection to a chair seat and a post in telescopic arrangement with respect to the standard, and said pedestal including means interengaging with the post and standard for detachably locking the adjustable section in adjusted position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, conveniently adjusted when desired, thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended thereby, readily assembled and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specically referred to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The standard 34 is disposed slightly oif center. with respect to-and isffintegral with base 33. Therearside 35 of standardl34-is formed centrally with a vertical cutout 36 (Figure VIii) which iopens atthe top edge thereof. The rear '-side 35 of standard 34 below and iny alignment with cutout 35 is formed with a pair of superposed aligned openings 31, The base-33 andstandard 34 are of the same'form and arrangement -as the stationary lower section of the pedestal disclosed in my copending applicationgserial Number 139,316, led

59 spaced from the lower ends of rabbets 41, 48 respectively and a pair of oppositelydisposed short rabbets 52 arranged below rabbets 49, 50 respectively and spaced from the lower end of the block. The rabbets 41, 49 and 5| align. The rabbets 48, 58 and 52 align. The rabbets 41 and 48, the rabbets 49 and 50, and the rabbets 5| and 52 provide the rear face of block 44 respectively, with an elongated rib 53, a short rib 54 and a short rib 55 The ribs are arranged' in spaced alignment. The rabbets 41, 49 and 5| form the rear face of block 44 with a set of teeth 56 for coaction with one of the racks 42. The rabbets 48, 50 and 52 form the rear face of block 44 with a set of teeth 51 aligning in spaced relation with the teeth 56 and for coaction with the other rack 42. Ihe engagement of the sets of teeth 56, 51 with selected teeth of the racks 42 provides a floating joint for holding the post 35 in its desired adjusted position. To prevent block 44 turning relative to post 35, the arm 45 extends through passage 4| and the arm 46 is positioned in cutout 36. To prevent the shifting of element 43 with respect to standard 34 and post 38 and for releasably maintaining the sides 38a, 381U of post 38 in binding engagement with the sides 34a, 34b of standard 34, the element 43 is formed with a pair of superposed aligned threaded openings 58, the walls of which are adapted to be engaged by a pair of headed threaded locking bolts 59 extending through openings 31 and engaging in the openings 58. Lock Washers 68 are provided for the bolts 59.
The adjusting member 26 (Figures l, 2 and 3 to l0) includes a horizontally disposed head 6| and a hollow shank 62 closed at its top, open at its bottom and having its inner side formed, lengthwise thereof, with a slot opening at its lower end. The specific construction of shank 62 will be hereinafter set forth. Shank 62 depends from and is disposed at a rearward inclination with respect to head 6 I. The latter extends at a slight upward inclination from rear to front and includes a forward part 63 having a downwardly curved rear portion 64. The part 63 in vertical section at any point throughout its length is ofi angleshaped contour forming a pair of flanges 65, 66 disposed at right angles to each other. The head 6| includes a rear part 61 having an inwardly anged upstanding web 68 merging at the rear end of its top into a lrearwardly extending flat apertured arm 69. The lower portion of the front of the top of web 68 merges into the lower part of the rear portion 64 of part 63. That f part of the top of the web 68 above the point of mergence of the web 68 with the lower part of the rear portion of part 63 is spaced from the upper part of the rear portion 64 of part 63 to provide a gullet 10. The shank 62 is integral at its upper end with the flanged web 68 and includes a front wall 1|, an inclined top wall 12 formed at its inner side with an inwardly extending flange 14, and a pair of side walls 15, 16 formed at their inner sides with inwardly extending flanges 11, 1'8 respectively. The upper ends of the flanges 11, 18 merge into the end portions of the flange 14. The flanges 11, 18 have their lower ends arranged above the lower ends of the walls 15, 16. The manner of setting u up the shank 62 provides its rear or inner side with an opening or slot. The wall 1| in proximity to its lower end is formed with a pair of screw threaded aligned openings 19. The adjusting member 26 at its upper end and in alignment with its shank has the front of .Part 61 of its .length than arm 8| and is formed with an opening The head 6| of the adjusting member 26 is secured to and transversely of the lower face of desk 23 in proximity to a side edge of the. latter and for such purpose the desk 23 has secured to its lower face in proximity and parallel to its rear edge an angle bar 83 formed of a horizontal ange 84 and a vertical ange 85 depending from flange 84. The latter is anchored against the lower face of desk 23 by the holdfast means 85a. When head 6| is positioned in relation to desk 23, the angle bar 83 extends through the gullet 18, the arms 80, 8| are arranged against the rear face of flange 85 and against the lower face of flange 84, the arm- 69 bears against the lower face of desk 23, the major portion of the length of part 63 of head 6| bears against the lower face of desk 23 and a portion ofthe upper end ofthe flanged web 68 is spaced from the lower face of desk 23. The arm 69 is anchored to desk 23 by the holdfast means 86. The arms 89, 8| are secured to the flange 84 by the holdfast means 81, 88 respectively. The means 81 extends through the opening 82ab in arm 80 and also through an opening 89 in flange 85. The means 88 extends through the slot 82 in the arm 8| and through an opening (not shown) in flange 85. The latter may be formed with openings 90 which are to align with the slot 82 in arm 89 for the passage of additional holdfast means if desired. When members 26 are secured to the desk 23, they will appear as shown in Figure 3. The adjusting member 26 is also what may be termed a combined carrier and support for desk '23. Threadedly engaging with the walls of openings 19 is a pair of inwardly extending screws 99a which function to tighten down member 26 after being adjusted. The member 26 is manually adjusted upwardly and downwardly. The member 26 at the lower end of its rear or inner side is provided with a nose or protuberance 9|)b constituting a fulcrum for a purpose to be referred The carrying, receiving and supporting structure or means 21 (Figures 1, 2, 3, 10, 14, 15, 16 and 20) for the desk adjusting member 26 shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 5, or for the desk adjusting member shown in Figure 14 also functions to couple desk 23 or the desk structure shown in Figure 14 with the seat 2| and back 22, as wellas acting, in connection with a desk adjusting member, to sustain the desk above the seat 2|, as well as in forwardly extended relation with respect to seat 2| and back 22. The means 21 includes an upstanding outwardly opening channel-shaped member 9| for receiving shank 62.
.The member 9| is formed of an intermediate vertical portion or part 92, an upper portion or part 93 extending at a forward inclination from the portion or part 92 and a lower portion or part 94 (Figure 16) extending inwardly at right angles to the portion 93. The member 9| is formed with a pair of spaced parallel side flanges 95, 96 extending from its lower to its upper end. The portion 93 is of greater length than portions 92, 94 and has its upper end edge 91 inclining downwardly from ange 95 to flange 96 whereby the latter is of less length than flange 95. The horizontal leg |68 of tightener |66 is to abut member |65. Otherwise than that as stated, the adjusting member |56 will be the same as member 26.
The carrying, receiving and supporting means |56 for the adjusting member |56 is of the same form and arrangement as that of the means 21 heretofore referred to withrthis exception that the upper end terminal portion of the member |65 of the means |58 has its rear face formed with a transversely extending narrow enlargement |69 formed with spaced threaded openings |16 with which are connected binding screws |1| which bear against the flanges |12, |13 of shank The box |51 is of the same construction as the open top box disclosed in my co-pending application as aforesaid. The inner wall |111 of box |51 is connected to a side of the chair back l|15 as at |16. The wall |16 is also connected with the vertical flange |11 of arm |18 of the means |58 by a hanger |19. `The chair seat is indicated at .|80 and to which the lower end of the means |58 is anchored. v
The arrangement of clamping means heretofore referred to in connection with shank 62 and member 9| is employed for clamping shank |6| and member |65 together after the latter has been adjusted.
Wit'h respect to the form including an ope top book box closed by the desk, the screws carried by the adjusting member and the means 26 are adjusted to produce a perfectalignment of the desk. Should a student suddenly sit down on any corner of the desk and exercise a strain beyond that which thecasting or adjusting member was intended for, a bend would -beproduced in the latter.4 Y Formerly, when such-bends occurred the casting was bent back by main force or alignment lat all times of the desk and book box,
keeping. the box square with the level of the seat. IThe foregoing statement relative to t'he screw adjustment with a desk is'employed alone and not as a closure for a book box.
The invention provides whereby when the desk of the form shown, is loosened, itis level and can be shifted to any position which solves a schoolroom problem requiring thatt'he/desk should be level when loosened. This condition means 'that the desk can be lockedY orV can be left loose for students requirements. In other words, if ve or six students are using the desk during the day, they can make the adjustment of the top quickly without resorting at all to the screws. The leverage of the desk top is such that friction tends to keep it up. In other words, the structural arrangement is such that the desk is constantly remaining level which creates a situation whereby the desk remains fixed without its being locked.
With reference to Figures 27 and 28, a book box or receptacle is indicated at |80 and is of the same form as the receptacle |30 shown in Figure 14, with this exception that the top of receptacle 80 is partly closed at its forward end by a narrow closure strip |8| having its edge |82 beveled. The structure shown in Figuresl 27 and 28 includes a combined desk and arm rest element formed from a one-piece flat body |83 having the major portion of its length of greater width and length than its remaining portion. The major portion of body |83 indicatedl at |84 constitutes the' desk and the said remaining'portion of'body |83 indicated at' |85 constitutes the arm rest. The edge |86 of the portion y|81! is beveled. The edge |85 coacts with the bevelled edge |82 to provide'for the elevation and lowering of body |83 fromthe Vrear of the latter. The portion |84 is hinged, 4Vasiat IBI, 'to the box |88 in the same manner as` shown in Figures 17 and 18 with respect to body |21 and box or receptacle |38.
VThe strip |8| forms a forward fiat continuation of the desk provided by the portion |84 when body |83 is in closure position with respect to the top of box |80. The strip IBI may, if denotshown, for receiving writing implements.
The chair and pedestal constitutes what may be termed' the basic part of the unit. The chair is adapted to have detachably and adjustably connected therewith any one of the forms' of the combined Y desk and arm rest elements,
, whether the ele-ment be provided with a book box or not, thereby providing forA the substitution of a different element for the one in connected` position and under such conditions interchangeability is provided with respect to such elements.
The shank which carries the desk or the box closed by the desk is constantly tilted outward by the actual weight of the desk, with or without the book box; There is so much weight at the top of the shank that the latter is always at its extreme point. The two set screws with -the adjusting clamp at the outside merely` serve to tighten the hang of the desk, with or without the box, in that position. The desk with or without the book box remains in a fixed position whether it is locked or not;"the locking of the desk isV to prevent anyloosening of the desk by the student.
What I claim is: v f
1. In an article of furniture for the purpose set forth, a one-piece flat body formed of an enlarged part and a reduced part extended rearward-ly from the latter, said enlarged part providing a desk and said` reduced part constituting an arm rest, an angle bar anchored to the lower face of the desk and including a vertical flange, an upwardly and downwardly movable combined adjusting and supporting means for the desk including a headv part and a'd'epending rearwardly inclined shank, said' head part being secured to the lower face of the desk at right angles tol and formed'with a gullet-for the passage of rsaid bar, saidv head provided with a pair ofv oppositely extending arms secured to said vertical flange, and a stationary combined carrying, receiving and supporting structure for said meansincluding a forwardly inclined channelshapedportion in which said shank is slidably mounted, andA a clamping device having a part mounted in said shank andv a plurality of elements carried. by said portion and coacting with said part for clamping the shank stationary to said portion.
2. In an article of furniture for the purpose set forth, a one-piece flat body formed of an enlarged partand'a reduced part extended rearwardly from the latter, said enlarged'part providing a desk and said reduced'part constituting an arm rest, an .angle bar anchored to the lower face of the desk andY including a vertical flange, an upwardly and downwardly movable combined adjusting andv supporting means for the desk including a head part and a depending rearwardly inclined shank, said head part being secured to the lower face of the desk Vat right angles to and formed with a gullet for the passage of said bar, said head provided with a pair of oppositely extending arms secured to said vertical flange, a stationary combined carrying, receiving and supporting structure for said means including a forwardly inclined channel-shaped portion in which said shank is slidably mounted, said portion and shank having correlated parts for selectively tilting said shank in directions at right angles within said portion, and a clamping device having a part mounted in said shank and parts carried by said portion for clamping the shank stationary to said portion when the shank is adjusted and non-adjusted. l
3. The invention as set forth in claim 1 having said shank of rectangular cross sectionand hollow, said' shankbeing closed at its top, front and sides, open at its bottom and having its back split lengthwise, the said part of said clamping device being in the form of a block having a portion arranged inthe shank and a portion positioned between theedges of the split of said'back, and saidelements in the form of clamping screws engaging. in. theY block.
4. In a combined arm rest andV receptacle for anY article of furniture including front, rear, and side walls, abottom and an open top, a narrow stationary strip located at the forward portion of said top permanently' closing the same, a unitary flat body providing a desk and an Varm rest and providing a closure for the top portion of said top, hinged connections secured to the desk and extending downwardly and forwardly from the desk into said receptacle to below said strip, the forward ends of saidl hinged connections being pivotally connected with said 'side walls, andV said strip having its rear edge beveled, said desk having its forward edge beveled, said bevels being so related to permit of the elevatingof the desk to open the receptacle and to form an inclined joint between the strip and desk when the latter is in closing position relative lto said top and to provide for the strip forming a flat forward continuation of said desk when the receptacle is closed.
5. An article of furniture comprising a'chair having its back extending rearwardly at an inclination'from bottomto top and itsvseat exv tending at an upward inclination from rear to front, a desk arranged over, extending forwardly fromand disposedV in transverse V`relation with respect to said seat, a head secured to the desk for supporting it, an upstanding hollow shank merging at yits upper end into said head, a supportingstructure having an upstanding part arranged at one side of the forward portion of the seat,` a horizontal part integral with and extending rearwardly from the rear side of said upstanding part and an angle-shaped part below and. merging into the bottom of the upstanding part, said horizontal and vangle-shaped parts being secured respectively to said back and seat on the same side of the chair, said upstanding part being of channel-shaped form and in which said, shank is slidably and adjustably mounted, said structure including adjustable means carried by said upstanding part` and extending in and coacting with said shank for clamping the latter` stationary to said upstanding part.
6. The invention as set forth in claim having said shank disposed at a rearward inclination relative to said head, said upstanding part being disposed at an inclination corresponding substantially to the inclination of said shank, and said angle-shaped part having a portion vertically disposed and merging into said upstanding part.
7. The invention as set forth in claim 5 having said angle-shaped part formed with a portion vertically disposed, said upstanding part extending at an inward inclination with respect to said vertical portion, and said shank being disposed at an inclination corresponding to the inclination of said upstanding part.
8. The invention as set forth in claim 5 having said shank and upstanding part formed with adj ustable abutting means for selectively tilting the shank in different directions with respect to said upstanding part.
9. An article of furniture comp-rising a chain including a back and a seat, a desk arranged over, extending forwardly from and disposed in transverse relation with respect to the seat, said desk being formed with a rearwardly extending arm rest, a head secured to the desk for supporting it, an upstanding forwardly inclined hollow shank merging at its upper end into the head for supporting and vertically adjusting it, said shank being formed on its inner side with a slot, and a shank receiving, carrying and supporting structure including an upstanding forwardly inclined channel-shaped part in which the shank is slidably mounted and adjusted relative thereto, said part being arranged at the forward portion of one side of the chair and terminating at its lower end into an angle-shaped part arranged against and secured to the lower face of said seat, said structure including a horizontally disposed bracing portion integral with and extending rearwardly from the rear side of said channel-shaped portion and being secured to the back of the chair at the said side of the latter, a clamping member arranged within said shankand adjusting bolts for said member carried by said channel-shaped part and engaging said member, said bolts when adjusted in one direction providing for said clamping member binding against the inner face of and extending into the slot of the shank whereby the latter will be clamp-ed stationary, in its normal and adjusted position, to said structure.

An article of furniture comprising a chair including a back and a seat, a desk arranged over, extending forwardly from and disposed in transverse relation with respect to the seat, said desk being fo-rmed with a rearwardly extending arm rest, a head secured to the desk for supporting it, an upstanding hollow shank merging at its upper end into the head, and a shank receiving, carrying and supporting structure including an upstanding channel-shaped part in which the shank is slidably mounted and adjusted relative thereto, said part being arranged at one side of the chair and provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending portion arranged against and secured to the lower face of the seat, said structure including a bracing portion integral with and extending rearwardly from the inner side of said channel-shaped part and being secured to the back of the chair at the said side of the latter, an adjustable clampingl means carried by said channel-shaped part, extending into and correlated with said shank for clamping the latter in its normal and adjusted position stationary to the said structure.

The invention as set forth in claim 10 having said shank provided on its rear side with a lateral protuberance bearing against the rear side of said channel-shaped part and constituting a fulcrum to provide for the shank shifting at an angle relative to said channel-shaped part, and said channel-shaped part including adjustable means on the front side thereof and b-earing against the front side of the shank for shifting and retaining the latter in its adjusted angular position.
12. 'Ihe invention as set forth in claim l0 having the lower end of said shank provided with adjustable means bearing against the front face of said channel-shaped part for disposing the shank in angular relation with respect to said channelshaped part.
13. An, article of furniture comprising a chair including a back and a seat, a desk arranged over and extending forwardly from the seat, a head secured to the desk for supporting it, an upstanding shank merging at its upper end into the head, a shank receiving, carryingv and supporting structure including an upstanding part in which the shank is slidably mounted and adjusted relative thereto, said part being arranged at one side of the chair and provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending portion secured to the seat, said structure including a bracing portion extending rearwardly from said upstanding part and being secured to the back of the chair, an adjustable clamping means carried by said upstanding part, extending into and correlated with said shank for clamping the latter in its normal and adjusted positions, said shank provided on one side with a lateral protuberance bearing against one side of said upstanding part and constituting a fulcrum to provide for the shank shifting at an angle to said upstanding part, and said upstanding part including adjustable means on the other side thereof and bearing against the other side of the shank for shifting and retaining the latter in its adjusted angular position.
14. An article of furniture comprising a chair including a back and a seat, a desk arranged over and extending forwardly from the seat, a head secured toy the desk for supporting it, an upstanding shank merging at its upper end into the head, ashank receiving, carrying and supporting structure including an upstanding part in which the shank is slidably mounted and adjusted relative thereto, said part being arranged at one side of the chair and provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending portion secured to the seat, said structure including a bracing portion extending rearwardly from said upstanding part and being secured to the the back of the chair, an adjustable clamping means carried by said upstandng part, extending into and correlated with said shank for clamping'the latter in its normal and adjusted positions, and said shank having its lower end provided with adjustable means bearing against one face of said upstanding part for disposing the shank in angular relation with respect to said upstanding part.
