UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOOH OSGOOD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR PREVENTING THE DESTRUCTION 0R ROTTINGOF BAGS, (Sic.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 216,290, dated June 10, 1879 application file May 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENOOH Oseoon, of Boston, county of Suffolk and State ofMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in a compound that will prevent the destruction or rotting of bags or other articles by acid phosphate, guano, alkaline matter, or any other article that will be destructive to textile articles, or bags made and used for the purpose of storing or transporting such articles, and that the following is a clear and full description of the same.
In describing the making and use of my compound, I first take (to illustrate the quantity, which can be varied as the case may require) bees-wax, three ounces; then add four ounces, more or less, of beef-tallow, (any tallow will do, but not as good;) melt andmix them well together. This will form a compound that will resist any acid, alkali, acid phosphate, or guano, and will protect acid phosphate and guano bags from rotting orinjury while such articles are stored or trans- To render this compound soft or plastic, in order to apply it to articles so that it will stick oil, pitch, &c.; but for a safe, sure, and cheap article, take three ounces (more or less) of common tar, which add to the compound, melt all together, and when boiling or sufficiently hot, dip the bags or other articles into the compound until thoroughly saturated, take them out, and pass them't-hrough between two pressurerolls, let them cool and they are ready I do not claim the coating of bags with tar, pitch, or gum, or crude petroleum-oil, or other oils, as specified and patented November 23,
rately combined with tar, for the protection of bags and other articles against the destruction or rotting by acid phosphate, guano, &c., in their transportation or on storage, as herein specified. I
The above-named compound is not unlike wax when applied to thread, giving strength to Whatever it is applied, rendering it air and water tight, and preventing all smell and fine powder from escaping.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A compound made of beeswax and tallow melted together and applied to any article to prevent it from being destroyed or rotted by acid phosphate, guano, or any alkaline matter, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. I
2. The combination of bees-wax and tallow, or either separately, with tar, as herein specified, and for the purposes substantially as herein set forth.
EN OOH OSGOOD.
