Description

Patented June 20, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 10 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to an amusement device, but more particularly to one of the captive type suspended from an overhead revolving structure and one which is under the control of the one individual operator so that skillful manipulation of the control presents novel thrills and experience to those operating the dev1ce.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel improved compact type of amusement device of the revolving captive type which insures safety of operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved amusement device of the captive type and suspended from a revolving structurein which the passenger carrying cab is adapted to swing upwardly and outwardly with respect to the revolving structure, but is incapable of moving forwardly or rearwardly except with the revolving structure.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. l is a diagrammatic view as well as a top plan view of the revolving structure showing the manner in which my improved amusement device may be attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the passenger carrying device showing the manner in which it is pivotally suspended to the revolving structure;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the lines 3 3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. lis an'enlarged detailed view showing the manner in which the bars are pivotally attached to the revolving structure.
The present invention is an improvement over my co-pending application, Serial No. 62,603 filed February 6, 1936.
In illustrating one form of my invention, I have shown the same in connection with the more or less conventional revolving structure diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing and generally indicated by the reference character I3. This revolving overhead structure is provided with a plurality of radially projecting arms II which are supported on a tower of substantially the same identical construction as is disclosed in my aforesaid mentioned co-pending application. Secured to the outer ends of each of the arms are bearing brackets i2 which are provided with angularly disposed bearing sockets I3. Pivoted in the aligned bearings I3 of each of the adjacent arms I is a shaft or pipe I4. Rigidly secured to the center of the pipe I4 is a right angularly depending pipe or shaft I5. Secured by means of a bracket Il to the lower end of the pipe is a bar I3. The bracket Il is secured to the lower end of the pipe or shaft I 5 by a pin I8. The bracket I'I is secured to the plate or bars I6 by means of bolts I9. Secured to the outer ends of the bar I6 is a substantially U-shaped pipe 20. Extending through the pipe 2i) is a cable 2| which has its opposite ends diverging upwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The upper ends of the cable 2| are attached to ears 22 of opposite sleeves 23. The sleeves 23 are secured to each end of the shaft I4 by means of pins 24. Intermediate portions of the pipe I5 are Yreinforced or braced by a series of rods or cables 25 and 26 which have their lower ends secured to space brackets 2l' and 28 respectively and their upper ends connected to the ears 22 of each of the sleeves 23. 'I'he brackets V2'I and 28 are rigidly secured to the pipe I5 by means of pins 29 and 3B respectively.
Mounted on the lower portion of the U-shaped pipe 20 and suitably secured thereto is a cab generally indicated by the reference character 3| which is provided with a seat 32 for holding two passengers therein. Loosely mounted on thepipe I5 and resting on the upper surface of the bar I6 is a pipe or sleeve 33. Secured to the sleeve 33 is a rudder 34 which is relatively narrow at the bottom and gradually enlarges towards the top and occupying a plane normally in the vertical center above the cab 3|. Projecting laterally in opposite direction from and secured to the lower end of the pipe 33 are horizontalv arms 35,. Pivotally connected to the outer ends of each of these arms 35 are connecting rodsr 33. The other end of these connecting rods 33 are pivotally connected to the outer ends of outwardly projecting arms 3l which in turn are secured to a collar 38. The collar 38 is secured to the upper end of a sleeve 39. The sleeve or pipe 39 is loosely vmounted on the forward leg of the U-shaped pipe 2 by means of a pin 4|. Secured to the lower end of the pipe 39 is a collar 42 which has a rearwardly projecting arm, 43. This arm 43 p-rojects in a direction towards the operator in the cab so that the same may be manipulated for adjusting the rudder 34 with respect to the pipe I5.
summarizing the operation of my improved amusement device, it will be readily seen that as the revolving overhead structure illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing is revolved the centrifugal force together with the manipulation of the rudder 34 will actuate the cab 3l together with its supporting structure outwardly about the axis of the shaft or pipe I4 in the bearings i3 so as to cause each of the individual passenger carrying cabs to lswing outwardly from the revolving structure.
Each of the cabs may be deviated from their normal course induced by the centrifugal force by manipulating the arm 43 by the operator so as to raise each individual cab above or depress it below its normal course, alfording great thrills to each of the individual operators in the respective cabs. In this connection it will be noted that by rigidly attaching the cab directly to the pipe l5 and in turn rigidly attaching the pipe l5 to the transverse horizontal shaft I4 relative to and fro movement except with the revolving structure is limited to outwardly and inwardly swinging movement and prevents contacting or striking of the adjacent cab during its normal operation.
While in the above specification I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will of course be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the following claims:
