UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST OPPBNHEIMEB, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 OPPENHEIMER BROTHERS & VEITH, or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-CHAIN SLIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,101, dated June 3, 1879; application filed April 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST OPPENHEIMER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in J ewelry, in the nature of a combination slide, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a slide for a cord or chain to be worn around the neck, the said slide being provided with a removable facepiece, attached thereto so as to be readily disengaged, its removal exposing the plainer face of the slide. When removed from the slide this face-piece may be worn as a breastpin, as the means employed for attaching it to the slide are equally well adapted to serve as an In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure l is a back view of the combination slide. Fig. 2 is a front View of Fig. 3 is a top view or plan. Fig. 4 is a plan or top view of the removable facepiece. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the slide proper.
A isa slide, made of any material suited to the purpose, and provided with holes a a to receive the chain or cord. In lieu of these holes the slide may, however, have an elongated hole, or be provided with a suitable band or loop to clasp the two strands of the chain.
The device for clasping the chain is common to all slides, and I make no claim to it.
B is the removable face-piece, which may also be of any suitable material. This piece is provided with a hinged pin, b.
A hole, 0, extends edgewise and laterally through the slide A. This is adapted to receive the pin 1) when the two parts A B are connected. This connection is made by simply slipping the slide on the pin, as shown, and causing the point or free end of the latter to engage the safety-catch cl.
It will be seen that in the present construction the slide A rests in the hollow of the facepiece B, and the pin b passes through it, so as not to interfere with the passage or movement of the chain through the holes a a.
When disengaged from the slide Athe facepiece B may be worn as a breastpin or ornament, the pin 1) serving to attach it to any part of the dress or hair of the wearer.
For the sake of variety, I prefer to make the face-piece B highly ornamental, and the slide A plainer; but any kind or method of ornamentation may be adopted and any kind of material employed without departing from my invention.
Difl'erent kinds of material maybe employed for the parts A B-as, for instance, the part A or slide proper may be of onyx, jet, or other dark material, and the face-piece B of gold, chased or set with stones; or the slide proper may be made of plain, dead, or polished gold, and the face-piece be highly ornamented with colored gold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, as a new article of manufacture, of a slide proper, A, provided with holes a. a, or other means of attaching'it to the cord or chain, and a face-piece, B, provided with means whereby it may be readily attached to and removed from the slide A, substantially as shown and specified.
2. The combination of the slide proper, A, provided with holes a a, or their equivalents, and the hole a, with the removable face-piece B, provided with the pin 1), adapted to be passed through the hole 0, so as to connect the parts A B together, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST OPPENHEIMER. Witnesses HENRY OoNNETT, ARTHUR O. FRASER.
