ELI W. J. LINDESMITH, OF LEETONIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPOUNDS FOR lNCENSE-COAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,945, dated May 27, 1879 application filed April 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI W. J. LINnEsMITH, of Leetonia, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Incense-Coal, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to the production of acondensed coal for burnin gincensein the core monials of churches, &c. The object thereof is to lessen the cost, to facilitate the kindling of the coal, and to economize the quantity employed in the various ceremonials.
The invention consists of charcoal, an adhesive material, saltpeter, and a suitable perfume, mixed together with water, dried, and pressed into blocks provided with perforations to facilitate the burning of the material.
The accompanying drawing shows a perspective view of the block.
The several ingredients are employed as follows: ten (10) parts pulverized charcoal; one (1) part mucilage, (gum-arabic,) or other suitable adhesive material; one part of saltpeter; any suitable perfume, as olibanum, in quantity requisite to obtain a desired strength.
Add sufficient water to make it into a paste. Then press or mold into blocks two (2) inches square by one-half (.5) inch thick, and dry by the heat of the sun or fire.
This forms a block such as shown in the drawing.
The perforations a may be made in molding or after the block is dried.
The proportions of the ingredients may be varied to suit circumstances.
The coal is lighted with a candle at the four corners. It kindles rapidly and easily, and emits no smoke, flame, or disagreeable odor.
The coal is much more economical in cost than what is now used, and, in addition, it does not waste so rapidly. as one block will serve for the longer ceremonials of the church. Another advantage is, that no stove or fire is necessary to enkindle it, as a candle will answer, as above stated.
Instead of a square block of the size mentioned, a block of any other shape or size may be made. i
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A condensed coal for burning incense in churches without smoke, consisting of a condensed perforated block of charcoal and saltpeter, perfumed, and held together by some cohesive, as described.
ELI WVASHINGTON JOHN LINDESMITH.
