To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES E. HAMILTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Electrical Switch-Wires to Binding-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to furnish convenient means for attaching spiral wire, such as is used for the connection of switches in'telegraph -instruments, to their bindingposts. The usual devices used for the attachment of straight wires cannot be conveniently used for spiral wire.

My invention consistsin a screw-plug, adapted for entering the coil of the wire, so as to give metallic connection, and at the same time be firmly connected with the wire and its fibrous covering material, which plug is adapted for connection to the usual binding-posts.

My device is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the same with a wire attached. Figs. 2 and 3 represent a modification adapted to a bindingpost of usual character.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to Fig. 1, A is a post, of usual character, in which the wire is held to the body of the post by a screw-plug, a.

The spiral wire is shown at b, and is covered by fibrous material, as usual.

0 is a screw-plug, it being of a size adapted for entering the coil of wire, I), and slightly distending the coil, so that the wire will follow the threads of the screw and insure a metallic connection.

In attaching the wire to post A the end of wire I) will first be inserted through the central aperture of plug a from the outer enter. The plug 0 will then be screwed into the coiled wire far enough to hold securely and prevent withdrawal of the wire.

\Vhen plug a is screwed into post A the head of 0 will give metallic contact.

In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the plug 0 is adapted for connection to a post wherein the wire is usually inserted through an aperture in the post and clamped by a screw. The screw end of c enters the coiled wire, as before described, and the fibrous covering is held by a metal ferrule or a winding of silk, as shown. The outer end of c terminates in a stout wire of a size and length adapted for insertion in the binding-post.

By this device the coiled wire is securely held, and may be connected to any of the binding-posts in use.

Instead of being formed with a screw-thread, the plug 0 may be ribbed or corrugated for application to the coil; but I prefer the screwthread.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with post A, screw-plug a, and spiral wire I), of a screw, 0, that slightly distends the wire, and has a head which gives metallic contact, as described, for the purpose specified.
