Description

May 16, 1939. A. BAMBERGER WATER FAUCET Filed Oct. 27, 1936 /N VEA/70H A. BA M5L-Ram 19M/caf da Patented May 16, 1939 UNITED STAE 'EET QFFlQ WATER. FAUCET Manitoba, Canada Application October 27, 1936, Serial No. 107,761 1n Canada October 28, 1935 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in water faucets and an object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which automatically checks the now of Water through the faucet when dismantled for the purpose of making repairs thereto and especially when dismantled in order to replace a worn valve washer therein.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which eliminates the necessity of closing the main valve of the water system in a building in order to effect repairs or replacements to the faucets therein.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which removes the necessity of supplying secondary main valves in each suite when the device is used in apartment blocks.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which can be successfully applied to numerous types of faucets.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which is simple to construct, economical to manufacture and will not easily become out of order.
With the foregoing more important objects in View and such other minor objects as may appear as the specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a cross sectional view of one embodiment of my device.
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the primary valve and its base as used in this embodiment of my device.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different gures.
r1`he embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing accompanying this application consists of an outer casing l having a curved neck portion 2 which expands downwardly into a valve housing 3. The wall of the upper part of this housing is thickened and interiorly threaded as at t while the lower portion thereof is externally threaded as at 5.
To the housing 3, I provide a detachable nozzle 6 having a converging mouth piece 'l internally tapped to engage with the threads 5 upon the housing and having the upper periphery thereof encircled by a removable collar 8 receivable within a circular recess 8. This collar is designed with an outwardly disposed handle 9 and a set screw I for clamping the collar in position on the nozzle. It will be evident that turning the handle will produce an inclined rotative motion of the nozzle on the threaded portion 5, thereby causing an upward or downward movement thereof upon the housing 3.
Immediately superjacent the interior of the above mentioned mouth piece l, I have furnished an annular seating II upon which rests my primary valve i2, the upper portion thereof being recessed as at I3 to receive the usual type of faucet washer M, the orice through the centre of which is aligned with an elongated socket I5 within the valve I2 provided for a purpose later to be explained.
Below the recessed portion I3 and integral therewith, is a triangular segment lt having the angular extremities thereof bearing against the interior walls of the housing 3 to prevent lateral movement of the entire valve I2. Subjacent the triangular segment and attached thereto, I have furnished a cylindrical base Il with a flange I 8 encircling the lower periphery thereof which bears upon the seating II in the nozzle 6. This base I have also provided with a plurality of aligned passageways I9 disposed adjacent the periphery thereof' through which the water passing through my faucet may iiow.
Within the socket I5, a removable stem 2d is inserted terminating at its upper end in an auxiliary valve 2l made integral with the stem and having an inverted conical configuration as best illustrated in Figure 1.
Engaging with the threads Il within the housing 3, I furnish a bushing 22, the upper surface of which is provided with inwardly converging shoulders 23 to receive the conical valve 2 I. The lower portion of this bushing is designed with a downwardly extending annular flange 24 which serves as a seating for the valve washer llt.
Having described my improved type of faucet, its mode of operation will now be explained.
During normal operation, the faucet is closed by revolving the nozzle by means of the handle Si and causing the valve Washer to bear against the flange 2li. To open the faucet, the nozzle is revolved to move downwardly whereupon the valve washer will withdraw from the flange and allow water to flow therebetween and pass through the orifices I9 to be expelled from the mouth piece l.
When it becomes necessary to make repairs or replacements to the interior of the faucet, the
collar 8 is rst loosened by withdrawing the set screw I0 whereupon the nozzle G may be unscrewed. During this procedure, the primary valve I2 will open while the auxiliary valve 2| will move downwardly and close against the bushing 22 thereby causing a cessation in the iiow or" water. The nozzle and primary valve may now be completely removed and after the necessary repairs have been effected, the nozzle and valve thereof may be replaced, thereby again lifting the auxiliary valve and allowing the Vdevice to operate in the normal manner.
From, the foregoing, it will be seen that I have devised an improved type of water faucet to which repairs and replacements can be made with greater despatch than is the case with former types as by the use of this device, 4theineoessity for closing the water main for this purpose, is eliminated.
Since various modifications can be Amade in the invention, and many apparently Widely different -embodiments of same, made within the scope of the claim Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense and I desire only such limitations placed thereon as are specically expressed in the accompanying claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
