Description

TOY
Filed Aug. 12, 1938 lznl.
Patented May 16, 1939 5 UNITED* 'Ii-OY Frederick H. Schulenberg, LimafO-hio, assignorY of one-half to Bert Hibbard,` Lima,V -OhioA Application "August 12,Y
6 Claims.
This invention relates to toys, and particularly to those of the animated gure type, and'ha's for; its object the provision of an improved toy" ofY this character preferably employing two gures,-
in the present instance representing opposing' prizeghters or boxers, and being soi-jointed and connected to an operating means that various non-uniform movements may be imparted thereto by movements of the'means.
The invention is fully described in the follow-v ing specification, and one embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drf'iwing,v in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a toy embodying the invention, with the 'figures-in" upright position, and Fig. 2 is a section on the'line2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing', I designates a frame member which, in the presentin'stance, is of T- form, with the upright 2 andjcross-arm 3. The iigures A and B, representing, in the present instance, the opposing figures of the toy, are carried in facing relation by the cross-arm 3 at oppcsite ends thereof.
Each of these figures comprises a hip section 5, in the present instance xedly attached at 6 to the respective end of the cross-arm 3 and having one leg 'I of the gure preferably rigidly projecting downward therefrom. This leg is the rearwardly extended leg of the igure in its present embodiment. The other or forwardly extended leg 8 of the pair is pivotally suspended from the hip section 5, being pivoted thereto at 9, and has a rearwardly angled extension IIJ at its upper end.
The body section II of each iigure, with head I2 attached, is pivoted to the hip section at I3. Each body section has a pair of arms I4, I5, pivoted thereto at opposite sides by a common pivot I6. One arm of each pair, the left arm I4 in the present instance, has a rearward extension Il from its one end proliecting substantially lengthwise of the arm.
A control bar 2li of rocker form is `disposed beneath the figures crosswise of the frame upright 2, being pivoted thereto intermediate its ends at EI. This b-ar at opposite sides of its pivot 2I, and in substantially equidistantly spaced relation thereto, is connected to the rear end of each leg extension IB by a link 22, which is pivoted to the rocker bar at 23 and to the leg extension at 24. A second link 25 connects pivot 24 of the leg extension II) to the associated arm extension Il by the pivot 23. The other arm I5 of the pair may be free of Aany connection with the control 1938,@ Serial No.` 2212477" barZl'Il and permittedV to 'swing at will relative tothe body section `II as such' section is moved, or it may be connected to the pivot 24 by a thirdv link 27'.- These control connectionsV for the two figures are substantiallythe'same, except that, in the present'i'nstance, the'first link 221 is somewhat shorter than the corresponding link for the other figurel so thatwhen the control bar is insubstantially true right' angular relation to the upright 2,- the'body sectionsof both gures may stand upright with the arms of one raised vand those ofV the other disposed in a lower position, or the body sections of'the two figures may assume different positions which changes thepositionsof the respective arms.
ThereV is no fixed position for the body section and arms'with" respect to any' given position of thecon'trol bar, this being due to the'pivotal connectio'n of the body and hip sections'and the link connectiim'v or connectionsibetw'een the linkV 22 and arm or arms of a gure.
While the movements of the body sections and arms are uncontrolled so far as any predetermined movements thereof are concerned, the movements of such parts are actuated by movements of the control bar. It is the obtaining of these various non-uniform movements of the body and arm sections that makes the operating of the toy interesting and the results amusing.
To facilitate operation of the toy, the lower end of the frame upright 2 is preferably extended below the control bar 20 a distance to provide a handle portion to be held in one hand by the operator, while one end of the control bar 20 is extended beyond the adjacent link 22 to provide a handle portion to be grasped by the other hand of the operator.
It is apparent that the totT comprises a frame member adapted to be rmly held in substantially rigid position by the operator.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a jointed figure carried thereby, said figure having a hip section flxedly attached to the frame, at least one leg pivoted to the hip section and provided with a rearward extension at its upper end, a body section pivoted to the hip section, a pair of arms, one at least being pivoted to the 55 body section, a rockable control bar pivoted to said frame, and multiple link means connecting said bar and the pivoted leg and arm thereof to impart various movements to such leg and arm and to the body of the figure when the bar is operated.
2. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a pivotally jointed gure carried thereby, said figure having a hip section fixedly attached to the frame, separate leg and body section members pivoted to the hip section, a control bar movably connected to the frame, and multiple link means Y connecting said bar to said leg and arm members to impart various movements thereto when thebar is operated.
3. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a figure having a hip member xedly carried by the frame, leg and body members pivoted to the hip member, and a pair of arms pivoted for relati e movements to the body member, one arm and the pivoted leg each having a rearward eX- tension at its inner end, a control bar pivoted to the lower portion of the frame, and a multiple link connection between said bar and each of said extensions and said other arm to impart various movements to the leg, arm and body members relative to the hip member when the bar is moved relative to the frame.
In a toy of the class described, a frame, a
-pair of figures carried in opposed relation by the of the rst link to the respective arm extension and pivoted to each.
5. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a pair of jointed gures Carried by the frame in opposing relation, each figure having a hip member xedly attached to the frame, a leg member and a body member each pivotally connected to the hip member and a pair of arm members pivotally connected to the body member for relative pivotal movements, the leg member and one arm member having rearward extensions at their inner ends, a control bar pivoted to the frame andy projecting in opposite directions from its pivot beneath the gures, a connection between said bar and each figure, said connection comprising a link pivoted to and connecting the bar and said leg extension, and two additional links one connecting said Iirst link and the associated arm extension and the other connecting the rst link and said other arm.
6. In a toy oi the class described, a frame having an upright forming a handle and a cross-arm, a gure carried by each end of the cross-arm in opposing relation, each gure having a hip member directly Xedly attached to the cross-arm, a pair of legs, one xedly projecting and the other pivotally projecting from the hip member, said pivoted leg having a rearward extension at its inner end, a body member pivoted to the hip member and a pair of arms pivoted to the body member, one of said arms having a rearward extension at its inner end, a control bar pivoted to the upright of said frame below its cross-arm and having arms extending in both directions from its pivot, one arm serving as a control handie, a link pivotally connecting each arm of the control bar to the extension of said leg, and a second link pivotally connecting the first link and said arm extension.
