sheet metal heads for tanks and has for its object to provide a new method of forming a tank head and closure member from a single sheet metal blank.
This and other objects of this invention andattendant advantages will become more readily apparent from the detailed description thereof which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is an end elevation of the sheet metal blank from which the head and closure member are formed.

In the several figures of thedrawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The method of forming a tank head and closure member from a single sheet metal blank forming the subject matter of my present invention is especially adapted for use in forming a head with a large opening therein and a closure member therefor such as may be used in sprayer tanks, cans etc. in order to allow the tank or can to be readily filled thru the large opening in the head and provide a readily removable closure member for the head. Heretofore such a head and its closure member would have been formed separately with a resultant Waste of stock in the formation of the large opening in the head. This waste has been eliminated by my new method and the time required in forming both the head and closure member reduced.
As illustrated in Figure l a flat circular sheet metal blank I of proper dimensions is used for the formation of the headand closure member and for the first step in the formation the blank is struck up to provide the central bulge or blister 2 thereon.
From this is formed the blank illustrated in section in Figure 2, which consists of a central inverted cup shaped section 3 surrounded by the horizontal flange 4 which in turn is encircled by This invention relates to methods of forming the vertical flange 5 with another horizontal flange 5 provided at the top thereof. The entire blank is surrounded by an outer cylindrical flange l which depends from the horizontal flange B.
From this form-ed blank is-cut the closure member by circularly severing the blank on the line x-zc intermediate the horizontal flange '6. The substantially finished closure member illustrated in section in Figure 3 is thus cut from the blank leaving a cylindrical flange with a small and intu-rned flange at one end for the head.
The latter is then form-ed to provide an int-urned flange 3 at the opposite end and have this flange extend inwardly of the cylindrical flange so as to provide a smaller opening in one end of the cylindrical flange for the closure member to rest thereon and close this opening in the head.
The 'i-nturned flange =8 is formed in such a m-annerthat the head may be suitably anchored to the tank as illustrated in Figure *6 and thus provide the opening in the tank which is adapted to be =closed by the closure member heretofore described. The head thus formed permits the closure member to enter thru the large opening in the outer end thereof and seat itself on the seat surrounding the smaller opening in the inner end thereof. This closes the opening in the tank and provides means whereby suitable locking means, such as a bolt member (not shown), may be inserted between the edge of the closure memher and the flange overhanging the outer end of the head in order to lock the closure member in place over the opening leading into the tank.
I claim:
1. The method of forming a tank head with a locking flange and closure member from a single sheet which consists in forming the sheet into a substantially cylindrical body having an open and a closed end, severing a concentric portion from the closed end to provide an opening therein surrounded by an inwardly projecting locking flange with the closure member formed by the severed portion of the head movable into and out of said opening past said locking flange, reducing the open end of said cylindrical body to a diameter smaller than the perforated end and smaller than the diameter of the closure member to provide a seat within the cylindrical body spaced from the locking flange to permit a seating of the closure member in said head spaced from said looking flange.
2. The method of forming a tank head with a locking flange, an anchoring flange and a closure member from a single sheet, which consists in forming said sheet into a substantially cylindrical body having an open end and a closed end, severing a concentric portion from the closed end of the body to provide the closed end with an opening surrounded with a locking flange and form a closure member movable into and out of said opening, reducing the originally open end of said cylindrical body by forming a concentric anchoring flange on the cylindrical body for attachment to a tank and providing a seat on said flange for the support of the closure member within the head spaced from the locking flange.
3. The method of forming from a single sheet a pressure resisting closure member and a tank head with a locking flange and an anchoring flange, which method consists in forming said sheet into a cylindrical body with a cup shaped center projecting into the cylindrical body and a horizontal flange connecting the cup shaped center With the cylindrical body at one end thereof, severing the cup shaped center from the cylindrical member intermediate the outside and inside of said horizontal flange so as to provide the cylindrical body with an in-turned flange and said cup shaped center with an out-turned flange so as to provide a closure member adapted to move in and out of the flanged opening in the cylindrical body, forming an inturned anchoring flange in the original open end of the cylindrical body to provide a seat for the out-turned flange of said cup shaped closure member for the support of said out-turned flange with the cup shaped portion of the closure member projecting from the cylindrical body and held centered therein by said anchoring flange.
4. A method of forming a tank head and a reremovable closure member therefor including a seat and a locking flange for the closure member from a single sheet, which consists in forming the single sheet into a head having a substantially cylindrical body with a closure member forming an integral part of the head at one end thereof, severing the closure member from a portion of the closed end of the head to provide an opening in the closed end of the head and a locking flange surrounding said opening, and inwardly flanging one end of the head to provide a seat for the closure member within the cylindrical body of the head at the opposite end from the opening formed in the head in severing the closure member from the head.
5. The method of forming a tank head and a removable closure member therefor including a seat and a locking flange for the closure member from a single sheet, which consists in forming the sheet into a substantially cylindrical body having an open and a closed end, severing a central portion from the closed end of the body to provide the closure member and provide an opening in the closed end of the head and a locking flange surrounding said opening for the insertion of the closure member into the cylindrical body of the head thru said opening and past said locking flange, inwardly flanging the open end of the cylindrical body to reduce its opening to a diameter smaller than the closure member and thus provide a seat for the closure member Within the head at the opposite end from the opening formed therein in severing the closure member therefrom.
6. The method of forming a tank head and a removable closure member therefor including a seat and a locking flange for the closure member from a single sheet, which consists in forming the single sheet into a substantial cylindrical body having an open and a closed end, severing a concentric portion of the closed end to provide the closure member for the head and an opening in a the head which permits the closure member to move into and out of the head, and then reducing the opening in the other end of the head to provide an inflaring flange forming combined anchoring means for the head and seating means for the closure member in the head.
